Join us as we interview Gemma Isaac, an accredited (MTA) music therapist and certified in Neurologic Music Therapy. As the music therapist at the Burns, Plastic and Trauma Unit (BPTU) at VGH, Gemma facilitates music therapy programs for patients, their families, and healthcare staff alike. http://gemmamusictherapy.com/

    How does music therapy work?

Music therapy is facilitated through a variety of interventions including patient song choices, music making, song writing, improvisation, and guided relaxation. Other times, the music therapist works alongside other healthcare disciplines such as nurses, physiotherapist, or occupational therapist, using music during physical rehabilitation to inspire movement and promote encouragement by accompanying movement through musical cues, which also helps peoople become distracted from the pain. Visit www.mtabc.com or www.musicheals.ca for more info.

Don't miss your chance to ask questions! How can music therapy help you and your loved ones better deal with pain?

Low Back Pain with Dr Owen Williamson

    in Health

Low back pain is among the most common chronic pain conditions in Canada. Four out of five adults will experience at least one episode of back pain at some time in their lives. The cause of back pain, however, is not always apparent; in fact, in approximately 85% to 90% of individuals with back pain, no specific cause can be identified.  To help us better understand this common condition and learn how to manage low back pain, we'll be speaking with Dr Owen Williamson. Dr Williamson is an orthopaedic spine surgeon and specialist pain medicine physician. He is also an Adjunct Senior Lecturer in the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, Monash University, Melbourne, Australia.  In 2007, Dr Williamson became the first orthopaedic surgeon in Australia to become a Fellow of the Faculty of Pain Medicine, Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists in 2007. He is on the Education and Training Committee and an examiner for the Faculty of Pain Medicine and is involved in the development of pain education programs in both Australia and Canada. PLEASE CALL IN WITH YOUR QUESTIONS AND COMMENTS FOR DR WILLIAMSON![DISCLAIMER: The Content provided on the Show is for informational purposes only and is not professional medical advice, diagnosis, treatment or care, nor is it intended to be a substitute therefor. MBSFood: Holistic Pain Relief w/ Dr. Heather Tick

    in Health

The Institute of Medicine reports that over 100 million people suffer from chronic pain compared to 25.8 million from diabetes, 16.3 million from coronary heart disease, and 11.7 million from cancer.  In 2004 Americans spent $16.6 billion to relieve pain, most of it to purchase over-the counter or prescription drugs. No matter how you measure it, pain is a big problem: for the person in pain, those providing treatment, the insurer, the employer waiting for an employee to return to work, the kids who want their parent to play, and other family members living with that person in pain. Unfortunately, conventional approaches to the treatment of pain so often do not improve the situation.

Dr. Heather Tick has spent twenty-five years practicing pain management. Patients often seek her out after “all else has failed.” Because she came to the study of pain after her own experience with it, she is sought after for both her expertise and her empathy. Join us as she shares insights from her book offering a solution to the pain problem—Holistic Pain Relief: Dr. Tick’s Breakthrough Strategies to Manage and Eliminate Pain.  Dr. Tick seeks to empower people with knowledge so they can help themselves and seek out quality care that is not damaging. Her goal is "always to treat people with compassion, to ease their suffering and to reassure them that their voices are heard.” Empower yourself by tuning in to see how YOU can manage and eliminate pain through use of this book, exploring the pros and cons of a wide range of Western and alternative treatments. We hope to hear you there!

Dr. Tick has been an integrative medical practitioner for over 20 years. A sought-after speaker, she lives in Seattle and works at the University of Washington, where she is the first Gunn-Loke Endowed Professor for Integrative Pain Medicine. Visit her online at http://www.heathertickmd.com.

The difference between pain and chronic pain.
    What causes chronic pain.
    How to eliminate chronic pain.

    Background and Guest Information:

There are about 100 million Americans that suffer from chronic pain, defined as pain that lasts longer than six months.
Chronic pain can be mild or excruciating, episodic or continuous, merely inconvenient or totally incapacitating.

The common theme, though, is you’ve been told to just live with it. Is there a way out of this pain cycle?

Join Dr. Ritamarie and Dr. Daniel Twogood as they discuss a unique approach to chronic pain.

Dr. Daniel Twogood graduated from the University of California in Santa Barbara in 1973, then from Cleveland Chiropractic College in Los Angeles in 1983.
He has written four books on chronic pain; his latest is “Chronic Pain Gone 90 Days.” This new book includes the 10 steps necessary to eliminate chronic pain.
