    Parenting a Transgender Child

    in Parents

Four years ago in April of 2012, Leslie Lagerstrom was my guest and spoke about her son Sam's transition from a girl to a boy.  At the time few people understood what the word "transgender" means. Today we will catch up with Leslie and discuss the remarkable progress that's been made in understanding what transgender means and what we can do going forward to advance awareness.

Leslie Lagerstrom is a proud mom of two children, who, after retiring from a 21-year corporate marketing career, is focusing her passion on being a writer and advocate. In 2011 she created the blog Transparenthood™, which chronicles her family’s experience raising a transgender child. Leslie is a regular contributor to The Huffington Post and her essays can also be found in two anthologies, Mamas Write and Nothing But The Truth So Help Me God. In 2013 her essay, Knock on Wood, was turned into a stage production that toured the United States. Committed to spreading awareness on the subject of transgender children, she frequently shares her family’s story, speaking in front of audiences across the nation, a highlight of which was being chosen as a cast member of Listen To Your Mother Twin Cities in 2014.

    What is Gender?

    in Parents

Today’s guest is Laura A Jacobs, LCSW-R, an advocate for all those discriminated against, marginalized, and otherwise not recognized for their self-defined identity. Laura identifies herself as trans and genderqueer. She is a recognized leader in the advocacy for LGBTQ people.

Laura will help us understand what’s going on socially and politically in the LGBTQ community. The vitriolic hate filled discrimination against people who do not identify as gender binary is no different than hate towards other races, religions, people with mental health problems, and many others.

Laura A. Jacobs: "I am a psychotherapist, activist, public speaker, and author devoted to the exploration of identity and the relationship between individual and society, the diversity of gender identity and sexual expression, and the search for meaning.
As Lawrence Jacobs, I worked in the arts as a musician performing independently and with bands, a composer of solo works and for independent theater, and a photographer exhibiting in galleries, as well as in less glamorous positions such as corporate middle management."

Parenting Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Kids

    in Parents

When a child announces that he or she is gay, lesbian or transgender many parents are unable to respond to the news with sensitivity or support of their child. Reactions can range from throwing the child out of the house immediately to making every effort to understand what the child is going through, and everything in between, such as: "How could you do this to me? What did I do wrong?"

Our today's guest is Dr. Anne Dohrenwend, author of "Coming Around: Parenting Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Kids," who will discuss how the child's "coming out" to his or her parents can be the most determinant factor in the child's moving forward successfully. Anything short of telling the child "I love you" will be heard by the gay young person that he/she doesn't really deserve love but the family members offer it anyway.

Anne Dohrenwend, PhD, ABPP, is assistant program director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program at McLaren Regional Medical Center, Flint, Michigan and an associate professor at Michigan State University. She works with parents and young people coping with LGBT issues. She has a PhD in counseling psychology from the University of North Dakota and is board certified in Clinical Health Psychology. Anne and her partner live in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
