Ask Dr. Applewhite About Perceptions of Beauty and Disability

    in Education

People with visible and non-visible physical disabilities are reminded constantly by advertisements that able-bodied persons are beautiful, productive, and successful. It was not so long ago that people of color experienced this lack of inclusion and were not portrayed with positive images. Unfortunately, the ongoing protests in the media make it clear that the perceptions held about People with Disabilities, as well as Blacks and other Non-White groups is still in need of change. Supermodel Beverly Johnson is our Special Guest and will share a unique perspective of how perceptions of beauty and disability can be changed. Our goal at White Apple Institute is to encourage positive images and perceptions that will enhance education and workforce success for Persons with Disability.Listen to Veterans with VET2VET Talk at the close of every show. Your one-time or monthly recurring tax-deductible donation of $5 or more at http://whiteappleinstitute.org will support our radio broadcasts. Interview with John Conlee

    in Music

Country legend JOHN CONLEE's success began in the late 1970s. His first release “Back Side Of Thirty” didn't climb the charts too high. Three more singles also met with a minimum success, although they all charted. But in March of 1978, the label released “Rose Colored Glasses,” a song John co-wrote, which became a huge hit as well as becoming his signature song. In January of 1979, the label re-released “Back Side of Thirty” which went on to become a No. 1 record, and the hits continued. The Conlee hit list includes songs like “Lady Lay Down,” “Friday Night Blues,” “Miss Emily’s Picture,” “Busted,” and “I Don’t Remember Loving You.”

He's been a member of the Grand Ole Opry since 1981 and was inducted into the Kentucky Music Hall Of Fame in 2006.

John has just released an album called Classics 2 - available at iTunes - featuring many of his big hits. His latest single is called "Walkin' Behind The Star."

    Remembering Carnival Traditions, Part II

    in Culture

The first carnival was staged in 1912 during the final years of Danish occupation and lapsed during World War I. Revived in 1952, carnival has become the second largest festival in the Caribbean.

A month-long series of dazzling pageants and talent shows is held to choose royalty to rein over the festival. Fun events such as a boat race, Greased Pig Contest and Toddlers Derby entertain everyone at the festivities.

A series of elimination contests to crown top performers are called Calypso Tents. Calypsonions offer satirical commentary on the state of the islands, oftentimes mocking the shenanigans of politicians. Other popular events held during Carnival is j'ouvert, a morning jump up, a food fair presenting the islands’ best traditional eats and a competition to crown the King and Queen of the parade troupes.

A children's and adult’s parade close the lively month with brilliantly costumed and decorated troupes and floats.
