November National Diabetes Month with Dr. Ed James

    in Health

President Barack Obama has proclaimed November 2010 National Diabetes Month.
Spiritual Food for Thought Radio welcomes Dr. Ed James to discuss Diabetes and preventive measures.
Like many other Americans, Dr. Ed James has a family medical history of obesity and diseases, including heart attacks, hypertension and diabetes. However, these chronic diseases need not dictate the future of his family tree or that of anyone else. Through the power of a healthy lifestyle, genes are altered, so that many chronic diseases need not affect us or our future generations.
Several years ago, Dr. James struggled with obesity and prediabetes, and his LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) was elevated. Rather than immediately prescribing medication, his doctor fortunately suggested that he read “The China Study”- by T. Colin Campbell, PhD. He also read “The Spectrum” by Dean Ornish, MD. These books prompted him to eat more fruits, vegetables and whole grains, and to include exercise, as well as yoga/meditation in his daily routine. He was soon “cured”.
Dr. James drew inspiration from his personal experiences, and in 2011 founded Heal2BFree, LLC where he serves as President. Heal2BFree focuses on helping individuals and organizations, including churches, to develop and implement action plans for healthy lifestyles, and is committed to closing the health disparities gap.
Dr. Ed James founded Heal2BFree in 2011 where he serves as President.

    An Interview With Masonic Ed

    in Lifestyle

Masonic Ed was gracious enough to join us in the studio to talk about things masonic. Who could resist speaking about  privacy and secrecy; if our production of antiquarians is meeting the need? Ed is an attentive fellow so of course he notices the culture of Canada is more cosmopolitan that it was when he was a boy. At times, when he is feeling tired, he feels  on one hand, he is being displaced and on the other hand proud that Canada is coming of age.

It was obvious for us to speak about strengthening our membership by drawing on first and second generation Canadians from the pool who are here quietly  appreciative of the opportunities this huge, friendly country has to offer. He worries out loud that the Order will need to tackle the legitimacy of dissenting opinions that  brings us to talk about accountability vs blame.   I questioned Masonic Ed  on whether he thinks the Craft in Ontario has become defensive or reactionary?  His answers may surprise you.  What he said about the cultural transition of ideas and ethics plaguing masonry may not be what you expect.

Prepare for a lively discussion as Masonic Home Companion welcomes  the very private, very interesting gentleman- Masonic Ed.

    See you all soon.

Parent Talk Live: Black Males and Dyslexia

    in Education

Dr. Mike Robinson, host of Parent Talk Live discusses Black Males and Dyslexia with his guest Shawn Anthony Robinson.

BIO:  Shawn Anthony Robinson, M.Ed, is a doctoral candidate at Cardinal Stritch University (Milwaukee, Wisconsin) in the Literacy and Language program. His concentration is on giftedness and dyslexia. Robinson brings a wealth of academic experience, training and knowledge about the psychological development of dyslexia, especially among Black males who have not tapped into their gifts because of their misdiagnosis and inability to read or spell. He is an emerging national speaker, and one of few scholars in the United States with a research focus on the scholarship, theory and literature addressing theoretical or psychological frameworks investigating twice-exceptional Black males who have dyslexia.

Practitioners working with gifted Black males with dyslexia must understand how these students navigate educational systems, understand their unique learning styles, and how they construct knowledge through different sociocultural experiences, which are associated with their self-perception, self-esteem and sense of identity.
