Honestly, I may not be able to be objective about our next guest. Tim Green has a special place in this radio host's heart. Here is why: though raised in the Church, Tim didn't get the vibe of the entire experience until much later - when Mo'Horns tapped him to play their from-the-heart Gospel. This is after an education immersed in Jazz studies at both the Manhattan School of Music and the Monk Institute at the University of Southern California.
So, in gravitatitng to the foundation of spiritual music later in life, Tim became an on-fire musical disciple. All that Jazz swimming in his saxophonist's fingers, combined with the truth of his childhood, came roaring back. What resulted was a staggering display of Swing meets Bop and Jesus. ONE listen to "Songs From This Season" seals THAT deal. "Psalm 1" and "Siloam" and "Philippians 4:13" and "Hope" - some of the titles on his 2012 release - does this say anything to you?
This extraordinary musician and composer/arranger/teacher was raised in Baltimore, a city known for its Jazz LEGENDS. Dad and an Uncle were singers - and an older brother, a trumpeter. In the the respected School of the Arts in town, Tim was selected to join the 25 member Grammy All-Star Band - which performed at the annual telecast. Eyes were on him then and ears are on him NOW - in ways that can only be described as (here's that word) an anointing. Terence Blanchard cannot say enough about him. The late Mulgrew Miller (a true mentor to Tim), said that his grateful student "had a song in his heart."
Having played with some of the BEST in both Gospel and Jazz, that praise from Mulgrew is haunting. Ask Michael Buble, who employs Tim Green as his sax man. For that matter, ask this phenomenal artist himself. Go ahead :)

Doña Oxford is an extraordinary soul, R&B and boogie woogie singer/songwriter and keyboardist who’s old school soul vocals and high octane keyboard piano create music that crowds of all ages go wild for. She puts on red hot live shows - many have called them “Gladys Knight meets the Rolling Stones” concerts. Doña has played with legends including Keith Richards, Bob Weir, Levon Helm, Albert Lee, Buddy Guy, Shemekia Copeland and Johnnie Johnson, and played keyboard for Van Morrison in his latest studio recording. Labeled the ‘Goddess of Soul’, Doña toured her sassy, soulful 6-piece band throughout the world while recording four fast selling albums. She joins us on Musiic Friday Live! at 2:05 pm ET.
Fourth generation Californian Corinne West, described as "the Siren of the Sierras" brings a powerful and eloquent voice coupled with finely crafted song to the global acoustic roots music scene. At 15, she left home with guitar in hand to travel America in a converted school bus, sang in an edgy rock-n-roll band, studied theatre, restored bi-plane wings, built custom curved walls as a river rock mason and opened a fine art business in glass and metal with a blacksmith in the High Sierras. All of that informs her elegant new sexy acoustic jazz-rock-folk, "west-coast acoustic soul" sound. Her newest album, The Promise is a collaboration with Pam Delgado and Jeri Jones of Blame Sally and is a soaring triumph. She joins us at 2:30 pm ET.
Known for his powerful, smooth vocals, DAVID JAMES arrived on to the country music scene in early 2013 with his debut EP release This Must Be It. His unique blend of country rock, paired with his electrifying voice and an unrelenting pursuit of making each performance better than the last, have been generating fans and acclaim from coast to coast. Born in the musical hotbed of Winnipeg, David didn't have a traditional upbringing. "I was exposed to a lot of different things growing up. My mom was a saint, my father was sort of a rebel, and I guess I kinda landed somewhere in the middle. I often tell people I was born into gospel and raised by rock n' roll, but I think it's given me a wider perspective on things and a lot of stories to tell."
With a voice that goes down like moonshine – strong but with a smooth finish - singer-songwriter EMILY REID effortlessly blurs the line between alternative country and indie pop. The journey began for Emily in 2009 when she migrated from Victoria, BC to Nashville. Three years later, Emily released her self-titled debut album: a collection of ten “unapologetically honest and unashamedly catchy” pop songs that chronicled her transition to the south (Delgado). In 2013, Emily’s southern soul found its voice. In working with producer Eric Masse, the material draws inspiration from the likes of James Taylor and Allison Krauss.
David and Emily are part of the CCMA (Canadian Country Music Association) Discovery Program. The mandate of the program is to create a national program to support country music artists to reach their potential by providing educational, mentorship, networking, and exposure opportunities.
This week our top story is the attempts by conservative politicians and pundits to make Benghazi, the IRS and the VA issues into a centerpiece of their 2014 campaign. Then we have two international issues to talk about including the President sending troops to Chad to look for the girls kidnapped by the radical islamic terrorist group Boko Haram in Nigeria.
Also I will cover the catastrophic flooding that has hit central europe which has hit Serbia and Bosnia particularly hard. If I have time I will talk about the shooting spree in Isla Vista, California that took the lives of seven people and wounded thirteen more.
At the end we will have our trademark weekly hall of fame and shame for those politicians and prominent individuals who made great sense or shameful nonsense, respectively.
If you want to write to me and give me your opinion of any topic I cover, write to email@example.com and I may just read your opinion on the air. Again that’s firstname.lastname@example.org
In this special edition of The Downstroke Podcast, Kevin Nesgoda chats with the voice of the Sonics, Kevin Calabro. They discuss what KC is up to these days, what he thinks about the NBA returning to Seattle, what he would do if the Sonics returned, and his Finals predictions. It's a great interview.
The Bench then joins Kevin (Nesgoda) to talk about the NBA's coaching carousel, the worst players in the league, the Playoffs and more. So have a listen. I think you'll enjoy it.
Once again some technical issues marred the beginning of the show. Eventually Kevin was allowed to join in and host. Tonight the guys talked about the NCAA tournament, whose draft stock improved and whose dropped, the 2014 NBA draft as a whole, the John Calipari to the Lakers rumor, the Milwaukee Bucks situation and how it makes the SonicsRising staff a bit uneasy to talk about.
The guys then ended the show talking about what players they would like to have a beer with, which eventually ended up into the Hangover 4 script being written and Kevin probably being murdered.
Host: Kevin Nesgoda
Personalities: Chris Meirose, Mitch Northam, Dontae Delgado and Taylor Bartle
Not Invited: Paul Rogers
