  • Coaches' Corner Cabaret Series with guest Yvonne Constant

    in Business

My guest tonight in my Cabaret Series is Yvonne Constant.  Yvonne Constant began her career as a ballet dancer, but because of her comedic flair and charismatic personality, the other dancers urged her to become a musical comedy performer instead.  Yvonne was cast to play multiple roles for the Broadway production of "La Plume de Ma Tante" and won a Tony award. When she did "The Gay Life" with Barbara Cook, Yvonne received a New York Drama Critics Citation as on of the season's Most Promising Actresses.  Yvonne was chosen by Richard Rodgers for a principal role in "No Strings,"  "She had 45 appearance on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson."
In addition, she has narrated or dubbed over 20 French movies including the much acclaimed, "Parfait", and was also the voice of Simone de Bauvoir.   In 2007, Yvonne was one of the stars in the City Center rival of "Follies" in New York. She received 14 rave reviews for her rendition of "Ah, Paris!"
Yvonne's memorable one woman show, "Yvonne Constant Sings Yves Montand" was standing room only in theatres and concert halls in New York, Chicago, and Washington D.C.
In recent years Yvonne has performed in several cabaret venues in the New York Metropolitan area including The Reprise Room, Danny's Skylight Room, The National Arts Club and the critically acclaimed Metropolitan Room where she appears regularly always with constantly updated shows. For many years her shows have been presented by Cabaret Legend Jan Wallman and her music director since 2006 has been the multi faceted Russ Kassoff.  Yvonne is playing the Metropolitan Room the day after this podcast airs live, on November 17, 2015.

Leslie Zemeckis is an actress, writer and award-winning documentarian. She co-wrote Staar a one-woman cabaret show which was the origin for the mockumentary she wrote and produced entitled Staar: She’d Rather be a Mistress, starring Carrie Fisher, Jeffrey Tambor and Fabio. She also wrote, produced and directed the critically acclaimed documentary Behind the Burly Q, the true story of old-time burlesque in America. The film aired on Showtime and was championed by such publications as USA Today and The New Yorker revealing the never-before told stories of the men and women who worked in burlesque during its Golden Age. Her latest film as writer/producer/director is the award-winning documentary Bound by Flesh, which chronicles an important part of American entertainment from a bygone era, delving into the world of circus and carnival life in the early part of the 20th Century. Her book Behind the Burly Q, published by Skyhorse in June 2013, is the definitive oral history of burlesque as told by the original stars themselves. Her current book, Goddess of Love Incarnate: The Life of Stripteuse Lili St. Cyr, is published by Counterpoint Press. Zemeckis is currently wrapping up her next documentary on the world's first female tiger trainer, Mabel Stark.
