Hindrances to Divine Guidance Part 5

    in Christianity

    The Devil Hinders Divine Guidance

    1. Deception is Satan’s attempt to get you to THINK contrary to who you are in Christ. By accepting the enemy’s words as our thoughts, believing his lies, we are easily distracted away from what the Lord is doing in our lives to what suits the purposes of the enemy. His greatest lie is that we are to figure out God’s will for ourselves and then do it, and that His will is not a place or action, but a state of reality. If you are IN GOD, you are IN HIS WILL!

    2. Temptation is Satan’s attempt to get you to ACT contrary to who you are in Christ. Most Christians put WAY TOO MUCH pressure on themselves, believing that if they aren’t in the “right place at the right time,” somehow they are powerful enough to keep God from accomplishing what He wants in their lives and in the lives of others. As we learn to depend on God, we can trust that He will have us where HE wants us when HE wants us there, regardless of our knowledge or understanding. As our confidence grows, the temptation to act according to lies will grow less and less.

    3. Accusation is Satan’s attempt to get you to FEEL contrary to who you are in Christ. When we fail to recognize accusation we enter into condemnation. Christians often feel condemned because they feel they have missed God and feel they will never make up the lost ground because they feel like God’s holding their failure against them. This often results in paralysis, and sometimes a perceived separation from God. Since none of this is true, God will not let us dwell in this place for long. He guides us by the hand, leading us step by step, until we regain our confidence that though we may not have walked this way before, we have walked With This Way before.

Hindrances to Divine Guidance Part 4

    in Christianity

As with all other areas of our lives, there are three enemies that strive to hinder our relationship to God: the world, the flesh and the devil. If we are habitually waiting on the Lord, the Lord will train us to deal with and overcome every obstacle in our way.

The World System Hinders Divine Guidance

    1. The Religious System, the beliefs and standards of the church you belong to, your church heritage, all contribute to your belief system concerning God and His attitude toward you. The more dependent on the Lord you become to meet your needs, the less reliant you will be on the religious system.

    2. Time Pressure As your confidence in your ability to hear from the Lord grows, you will be able to recognize and overcome the stress of having to make decisions NOW.

    3. Peer Pressure Perhaps one of the hardest habits to learn is saying “no” without explanation.

    Our Flesh Hinders Divine Guidance

    1. Need for Control Our flesh has two main goals; to get our needs met our way, and to prevent rejection.

    2. Temperament, Personal Expectations & History God designed your soul by combining the elements of mind, will and emotion according to His plan.

    3. Co-Dependency Many Christians have the mistaken belief that it is their job to make God happy by obeying Him, giving Him glory, or measuring up to His standards.

    The Devil Hinders Divine Guidance

Divine Guidance: Practical Do’s and Don’ts

    in Christianity

Do Be Discrete. Decision-making can be stressful; trusting the Lord to bring you into His rest will ultimately make it easier to have confidence that you have heard from Him.

Don’t shop around to get the answer you want. Truth is not in the number of people who agree with your decision.

Do learn to say “no” without explanation. You do not owe anyone an explanation for your decisions. Take responsibility for your decision.

Don’t save your communication with the Lord for “important” decisions. Over time you will be able to sense His direction on a variety of levels.

Do make decisions with others. Whoever is involved in the decision needs to be in agreement.

Do include all family members in the decision-making process. Habits are caught, not taught. Mentor your kids through the process.

Do remain flexible. Once a decision is made, continue to pay attention to the Spirit.

Do make decisions with confidence, remembering you are free to make a mistake! There will be times He will be silent when you seek His direction.

Do be sensitive to His re-direction. All the necessary guidance is not always given at once.

Do be sensitive to the still small voice of guidance. The farther we are away from depending on God, the louder He might have to shout.

Do be prepared to be “on your own.” It is possible to be personally in the will of God, though out of the will of God for a group.

Don’t impose your level of understanding or experience on others. God leads according to our level of dependence.

Do accept the Lord’s private teaching. There are some truths that we have to experience for ourselves.

Methods of Divine Guidance Pt 2

    in Christianity

Take some time to reflect and let the Lord bring to your mind those areas in your personal history that you may have overlooked in which He was trying to give you guidance, but it was perhaps missed because it was misinterpreted.

    1. Providence/Circumstance There is an unconditional guidance in which God acts sovereignly without any requisite for such guidance, and regardless of our relationship with Him. ALL THINGS are under His complete control. This form of personal guidance is most obvious to us “after the fact,” looking back over our lives. This may be one reason so many find it difficult to reflect on their lives; they may be avoiding either the clear involvement of the Lord in their lives, or evidence of those times when they missed opportunities to seek the Lord’s help. But avoiding the past only prevents us from reaping its benefits, from learning its lessons; the best time to make course corrections is NOW!

    2. Law/Morality The law of the land, or social/cultural guidance, governs the natural realm in which we live, and the consequences of breaking the law are also natural. Likewise, morality is cultural; what is acceptable and “right” in one culture may not be acceptable in another. God is much less easily offended than we think He is. Whether we fulfill the law and morality of our culture or not does not affect our identity as either sinner or saint.

    3. Instruction/Direction Here is a conditional guidance in which our participation, awareness and enjoyment of the leading of God is contingent upon our compliance with certain conditions, i.e., waiting, seeking, getting healed, etc.

    4. Knowing God As we grow in dependence, we become more and more sensitive to the internal direction of His Personal Presence, and to recognize the assurance of the peace and confidence that only comes from abiding both with Him and in Him.
