Big Question: Should Parents Have The Right To Refuse Vaccines For Their Children?

The Anti-Vaccine Generation: How Movement Against Shots Got Its Start

Mistrust and misinformation give a shot in the arm to measles vaccine naysayers.

By Laura Parker , National Geographic

    PUBLISHED Fri Feb 06 16:03:00 EST 2015

You could call New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and Kentucky Senator Rand Paul members of the "vax generation."

Born in 1962 and 1963, respectively, they were in grade school when the newly developed measles vaccine became the life-saving advance that protected millions from a highly contagious childhood disease. Though not as scary as polio, it was potent enough to strike four million kids, hospitalize 48,000 of them with complications, and kill more than 400 every year.

That both men stoked an anti-vax movement this week by suggesting in the middle of a national measles outbreak that parents should be allowed to choose whether to vaccinate their children speaks to a generational shift in thinking about science and politics. Parents should have "some measure of choice" in vaccinating their children, Christie told a reporter, while Paul called the decision not to vaccinate "an issue of freedom."

Aaron Rodgers leads 3-0 Packers against the San Francisco 49ers

    in Sports

Insert your catchy story line right here. This game has a number of fascinating storys to go along with the game. Mike McCarthy was on the San Francisco 49ers staff when they passed up Aaron Rodgers and took Alex Smith with the first pick, in the 2005 NFL draft. Rodgers favorite team growing up was the San Francisco 49ers. He is also a California native. Colin Kaepernick is a Wisconsin native, and has never lost a game to the Packers (3-0 including playoffs). Kaepernicks' single game career highs in passing yards (412) and rushing yards (181) both came against the Packers.

Now that the story lines are out of the way, lets take a look at the keys to the game. Aaron Rodgers has been nothing short of spectacular through the first three weeks of the NFL season (67-91, 771 yards, 10 tds). The offense has taken on a different dimension with the loss of Jordy Nelson, but they have averaged 32 points per game. That is more than double the 15 points per game that the San Francisco 49ers have averaged per game. The 49ers have relied on Carlos Hyde who ranks third, in the NFL, in rushing with 262 yards.

The Packers will have to have excellent lane discipline to contain Kaepernick, and should try to keep him in the pocket. When he breaks the pocket, he can be dangerous with his arm and legs. If the Packers can win at the point of attack, like they did against Seattle and Kansas City, they could make it long day for the 49ers. Rodgers will have to continue using all of his weapons. The short passing game and run after the catch have equated to three victories. The 49ers defense gives up 31 points per game and are allowing 284 passing yards per game. On paper, this is a huge advantage for Rodgers and the Packers offense. To maintain the momentum, the Packers will have to protect the ball and keep the penalties to a minimum.  Listen in to the show to hear who Evan and Troy pick to win the game.
