What does it mean for a child to be gifted?

    in Parents

There are many misconceptions about what it means to be gifted.

Gifted Students Don’t Need Help; They’ll Do Fine On Their Own.

Would you send a star athlete to train for the Olympics without a coach? Gifted students need guidance from well-trained teachers who challenge and support them in order to fully develop their abilities. Many gifted students may be so far ahead of their same-age peers that they know more than half of the grade-level curriculum before the school year begins. Their resulting boredom and frustration can lead to low achievement, despondency, or unhealthy work habits. The role of the teacher is crucial for spotting and nurturing talents in school.

    Depression and Suicide

    in Spirituality

Many people are dealing with depression and suicide. There are many reasons why people want to commit suicide. Some of it is because of issues which seem unbearable to deal with. Some are because issues that may never be known.

Unfortunately, many who suffer from depression and suicidal thoughts succeed in taking their lives. They have made "cries of help", to no avail. Some have taken their lives because they don't want to deal with the despondency any longer and feel that there is no hope, nor will there ever be.

This evening we want to specifically talk about depression and suicide as it relates to a video of a young woman videotaping her "suicide". This young woman was despondent because her boyfriend had been cheating on her and she felt like he didn't want her anymore. Also, she was upset because she was the darkest memeber of her family and people, including her very own family, teased her and made fun of the color of her skin, She couldn't take it anymore so she took several bottles of pill, using Nyquil as the liquid to wash down the pills.

Please call in to this open forum broadcast and LET'S TALK ABOUT IT!

    The President Attacks Inequality

    in Politics Progressive

“I am convinced that the decisions we make on these issues over the next few years,” he said, “will determine whether or not our children will grow up in an America where opportunity is real.”        An American child born into the lowest 20 percent income level has a less than a 1-in-20 chance of making it to the top, as Mr. Obama pointed out. But one born in the top 20 percent has a 2-in-3 chance of staying there. And the top 10 percent now takes half of the national income, up from a third in 1979. That’s a level of inequality on par with Jamaica and Argentina, and such concentrated wealth leads to more frequent recessions, higher household debt and growing cynicism and despondency.

Praying Your Way Through the Depths of Despair

    Praying Through the Bible #65

    TEXT: Psalm 88

We are in a series of messages titled "Praying Through the Bible: A Series on Every Passage and Verse Regarding Prayer in the Bible". The purpose of this series is to encourage and motivate you to pray to the God of the Bible. We highlighted each of these over 500 verses and passages in the Prayer Motivator Devotional Bible. So far, we have done 64 messages in this series.

This is message #65, titled "Praying Your Way Through the Depths of Despair"

During this time of year -- the Fall and Winter seasons -- many people experience feelings of depression and gloom. Doctors call it "seasonal affective disorder" or SAD. According to the Mayo Clinic, people begin showing "symptoms of this disorder in the fall and may continue into the winter months, sapping their energy and making them feel moody." This seasonal depression is also attributed to the fact that the amount of sunlight during the day is declining. Because our side of the earth is now tilted away from the sun, the sun takes longer to rise and is quicker to set. Consequently, there is more darkness during this time of the year.

All of us are familiar with feelings of depression, sadness, grief, and loss. Sometimes, we get to the point of utter despondency. The word "despondent" means "in low spirits from loss of hope or courage." This is the type of feeling we get from the writer of Psalm 88.

This writer is identified as a man named He-man (HE-men). According to the Jewish Encyclopedia, Heman (HE-men) was the grandson of the prophet Samuel. He is identified as "the singer". He was one of the three chief Levites appointed by David to oversee the musical service in the Tabernacle. He had fourteen sons, all of whom assisted in the choir under their father.
