    in Design

Repurposing ideas are like little gems falling from the sky, and we're talking with two creative experts on this episode.

We are sharing repurposing ideas for both the newbie repurposer and the experienced. And on this episode, we put two repurposing experts -- Anitra Mecadon and Tara Dara -- to our unconventional repurposing ideas test.

Pop quiz: What could you make out of these?

    Fishing rod
    Pool cue and billiard balls
    Swim floaties
    Charcoal barbeque lid

(Tweet us your answer for a chance to win $25 gift card)

Anitra Mecadon, the bubbly and fiercely fun host and designer from DIY Network's 'Mega Dens' is sharing repurposing ideas for everything from old doors to fishing rods. She's contributed to HGTV’s All American Handyman, HGTV’s Behind the Build Dream House, HGTV’s Behind the Build Smart Home, HGTV’s Raise the Roof College Challenge and more. Whether she’s dangling from a scaffold or breaking down a concrete wall, Anitra’s rock ‘n’ roll approach gives her an edge not usually found in most designers.

Tara Dara makes magic out of discarded objects she finds on walks through her neighborhood, and is crazy-good at sewing. She also studied faux finishing and mural painting, raku pottery, photography, and even Play Doh. Tara shaved her head for St Baldricks Day 2014 to raise money for Childhood Cancer Research. She's shared her expertise with The Rachael Ray show, sewing ideos for PBS, various DVDs, online sewing videos, and as one of Bob Vila’s Bloggers.

Valerie Grosso - Introducing Play and Experiential Learning into the Classroom

    in Entrepreneur

Be Naturally Curious was started by Valerie Grosso, a former college biology professor, who is passionate about making scientific concepts part of every kid’s life tool kit. She enlisted the help of several like-minded scientists who believe kids’ natural creativity and curiosity make it possible for them grasp and internalize topics adults usually think are too complicated for them. Our artists and designers are also key members of the Be Naturally Curious team, because effective teaching and communication are so dependent on visualizing the topics and processes being taught.

Valerie is a microbiologist who holds BS and PhD degrees from Yale and Harvard, respectively, and is a former college professor. She lives in New York City with her husband and two young daughters (who try out all the mini-courses) and spends her free time knitting and roaming around the American Museum of Natural History (not necessarily at the same time). Let's talk about better design ideas for Alzheimer's

    in Design

Interior design can be a powerful tool to helping everyone live better, whether it's designing for Alzheimer's, babies, or the rest of us quirky humans.

    Theresa's dad has Alzheimer's.

A few months ago, her family decided that to help preserve the health and vibrancy of her mom, it was time to move dad into a memory care facility. Her parents had lived together for 47+ years, so it wasn't a decision made lightly.

Theresa kept coming back to one simple question: How can designers help caregivers extend the time at home for a family member with Alzheimer's?

So on this episode of MyFixitUpLife talk, Theresa is sharing a quick tour of the common area at her dad's memory care facility, and talking with a few experts to explore how designers can reach into their bag of essentials to make a difference for families.

Someone is diagnosed with Alzheimer's every 67 seconds and it's the 6th leading cause of deaths in the U.S., so we're betting that this is a conversation that affects most all of us.

Marilucy Lopes is talking about how caregivers can modify the home environment, from painting black on doors that shouldn't be opened to using familiar elements from hobbies and family photos to help trigger memories.

Lisa Burkholder from the Alzheimer's association's Delaware valley chapter is sharing why pattern can cause fear and confusion, about how including nature into the environment can be soothing, and how to connect with other families through the walk.

Mitzi Beach explores how color can both create order and confusion for someone who is memory impaired. Mitzi and Theresa are talking about how there is a parallel between caring for an Alzheimer's patient and a baby. There are tons of resources on how to baby-proof a home, but we are at a loss for resources when it comes to designing for Alzheimer's.
