If you visit SheridanHoops.com with any regularity, then you know we recently wrote a piece listing the NBA's top 10 point guards.
The list includes some relative newbies such as John Wall and Kyrie Irving. It also does not include Deron Williams and Derrick Rose, who have not done enough of late to merit inclusion among the best players at arguably the most talented position in the league.
The folks at Rip City Radio 620 in Portland visit the site with some regularity, because they asked author Chris Bernucca to go on the air and discuss his No. 4 selection - Damian Lillard of the Portland Trail Blazers.
Lillard has the least experience of any of the top 10. But he has crammed an awful lot onto his resume in just two years - a Rookie of the Year award, an All-Star berth, a playoff series win capped by his dagger 3-pointer at the buzzer. And just about anyone with a brain in their skull believes Lillard is going to get better.
On Tuesday afternoon, Bernucca appeared on the Wheels at Work show with Blazers radio play by play man Brian Wheeler and discussed the recent evolution of the NBA point guard from a passer to a scorer, why Rose and Williams didn't make the cut, and the attributes of Lillard, who is described as "easy to like."
Back in 2008, I covered the U.S. Olympic team in Beijing, where Jason Kidd was the No. 1 point guard, Chris Paul was No. 2 and Deron Williams No. 3 -- but it was a close contest between CP3 and DWill. They were considered equals then, but Paul is already having the type of season that shows why he has grown into the better player -- and why he is the more popular of the two (Blake Griffin as a running mate helps). Plenty on that and more from around the NBA, including the lack of an extension for Gordon Hayward and the strong start by the Indiana Pacers, in this podcast with Gordon Monson and Spence Checketts of 1280 The Zone in Salt Lake City.

The fellas discuss the NBA Playoffs as the Wild Wild West has lived up to the hype. We continue last week's conversation about Anthony Davis – who is playing lights out in the postseason despite the fact that the Splash Brothers are showing why they are the best back-court in the league. Ed will complain about Deron Williams – whose heart pumps Kool-Aid, give props to the addition of Shump, JR, Timofey Mozgov as the Cavs roll in the playoffs, and gush about the greatness of the San Antonio Spurs while eating a bowl of crow after the Houston Rockets dominant performance thus far in the playoffs.
Fuz will certainly bring up the Washington Capitals-New York Islanders series, with the Caps now taking a 3-2 advantage. Given time, the guys will also talk about Andre Ward's long-awaited return to the ring, early impressions of the baseball season and a rant about the Montreal Impact almost getting mugged by Club America.
Rudy Gobert had a coming out party for the NBA during the BBVA Compass Rising Stars Challenge with 18 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks for the World Team.
The Utah Jazz eventually traded Enes Kanter at the deadline, which promoted Gobert into a full-time starting role. Since then, Gobert has averaged 10.5 points, 14.1 rebounds and 3.1 blocks per game while shooting 57 percent from the field.
Another big man who’s played well lately has been New Orleans Pelicans star Anthony Davis. He's on pace to become the fourth player in league history with a player efficiency rating above 31. Only Michael Jordan, Wilt Chamberlain and LeBron James have previously done so. If the Pelicans make the playoffs, don’t be surprised if he gets serious MVP consideration as Michael Scotto outlined in a previous column.
With that in mind, Scotto joined 1320 AM KFAN in Utah and hosts Kyle Gunther and Ben Anderson to discuss Gobert’s emergence, Anthony Davis’ realistic chances at the MVP award and the league’s top title contenders. We also looked back at the Deron Williams trade for the Brooklyn Nets.
