Actor Dennis Farina (Get Shorty, Midnight Run) has died. A former police officer who became one of cinema's best character actors, Mr. Farina spoke with Movie Geeks United! back in 2011 about his starring role in a very special film titled The Last Rites of Joe May.
In honor of Mr. Farina's enormous contribution to the craft of screen acting, this episode contains that interview in its entirety.
Alison Powers capped one of the most successful seasons in bicycle racing history - including a trifecta at the US National Championships - with the surprising announcement that she is retiring from professional racing. Founder of the Women's Cycling Association, Robin Farina joins us for an interview with Powers in the debut of our new show which is focused on the personalities and issues in women's cycling. While we'll miss seeing Alison in the pro peloton it's a given that she'll be pursuing her future with the same determination she has for her sport(s)
The host Vince Anello fields calls with Tony Farina. Callers are focused on tonights election in the 62nd NY State Senate District. The Candidates are North Tonawanda Mayor Rob Ortt and Niagara Falls Attorney and School Board Member Johnny Destino. Either way, due to the retirement of Senator George Maziarz the district will have a new Senator.
Over the Top Radio is starting a new show centered around women's cycling which will be co-hosted with Robin Farina. In this, our introductory program, we'll discuss future guests, the 2014 cycling season, 2015 cycling season and pertinent issues facing women in cycling.
Robin Farina : Robin began her cycling career over 13 years ago after graduating from the University of Tennessee with a degree in Sports Management. She has raced on several professional teams throughout her career and is the former 2011 National Road Race Champion and a 2012 Olympic long team member.
When not on the bike, her time is spent overseeing the newly formed Women’s Cycling Association (WCA) grow and become a global movement for women’s equality in sport and life. After several years of racing at the highest level, Robin saw the need to help Women’s Professional Cycling become a stable platform for future cyclists. The main goal is help achieve equity and help people see the health benefits through riding bikes. Robin’s main objective is to help grow cycling at the grassroots level. “The sport of cycling will gain more fans and more exposure which will in turn give more women the opportunity to race.” Her passion for sport and the sport of cycling drives her to stay dedicated and lead the charge for a positive change. Through the WCA, she dedicates her efforts to helping various philanthropic organizations such as World Bicycle Relief and the American Diabetes Association – Tour de Cure series. She also sits on the Board of Directors for the US Bicycling Hall of Fame.
Chicago actor Dennis Farina returns to his roots in The Last Rites of Joe May playing a down and out hustler.
Dennis tells host Robin Milling what it was like to return to his old neighborhood and how he loves to take a little momento from each film.
"I have a shirt that was worn by Gene Hackman in The Unforgiven that I wore in a movie. From The Rites of Joe May I have the leather jacket my character wore. When the wardrobe ladies came to me I said, 'this jacket is Joe May.'"
Sadly, Dennis Farina passed away July 22, 2013 at the age of 69. On screen he might have played the tough guy, but off screen he was a gentle, soft spoken and lovely man.
Actor Dennis Farina drops by Mr. Media to chat about his new HBO series, Luck" starring Dustin Hoffman, and his indie film, The Last Rites of Joe May.

Janel Holcomb’s professional career began as a Chemical Engineer but she soon transitioned into teaching high school chemistry, math, and physics to help teenagers get excited about learning. During her time as a teacher in San Diego, Janel discovered road cycling by riding and raising money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society with her husband. Cycling friends and a local coach encouraged Janel to take the next step and start bike racing; it turned out to be the right path as Janel turned professional in 2008, just one year after her first bike race. Janel has raced for three pro teams and the US National team in the US, Canada, Europe, New Zealand and Qatar. Her breakout year was in 2011, when she won the overall NRC title and three NRC stage races: Cascade Cycling Classic, Tour de Toona, and the Joe Martin Stage Race. Janel was honored to be selected as a member of the US Olympic Long Team for the 2012 London Olympics and will continue to race through 2016 with the goal of qualifying for the Rio Olympics, helping the US earn a gold medal at the World Championships, and winning more races along the way.
