The View Up Here on #COP21, climate, costs and politics

    in Politics

Canada and its environment. Its air, water, lands, coastlines and glaciers. The last ten years is not a very positive recent past. The Harper Government withdrew from the Kyoto Accord, did absolutely nothing at Copenhagen and stayed on message that climate change was fake. A ruse by enviroterrorists to deny "Canadians" the "benefits" of a resource economy on steroids and wearing a blindfold. A decade later and Canada is the poster boy for failure in environmental stewardship.

COP21 in Paris promises to be different. The increase in major emitter participation in real planning has never been higher. There have never been so many public policies from nations on climate before. Have we heard this before? Well, yes and no. Despite the new level of urgency and co-operation, there will also be a massive corporate presence at the tables. How can one deny the inevitable industry being built to deal with this mess. And it won't be cheap even if it were.

Prime Minister Trudeau will be joined by Premiers, Environment Ministers and scientists in Paris. A united front for action is the narrative. Alberta has led the way domestically with introduction of  "Carbon Plan". Astroturf lobbies and sycophantic politicians warn of the economy disappearing. Yet the industry says they can work with it and it is reasonable on initial appearance. Cue the CPC end of days fundraising videos. Apparently, change is still evil.

Some regions are much better equipped for the shift from carbon to renewables than others and that's just domestically. Globally it's a much more visible issue. This is where our old friend Politics comes in. Recent events have basically outlawed protests of any kind in Paris. The efforts will now be dispersed around the world but may be even stronger given the access by all to be heard.

Lots to look at in two hours, but we will do our best and you are invited.

Remembrance Day special with Pat Stogran on Veterans' past, present & future

    in Politics

    Lest We Forget.

Over a century after it was written during the second battle of Ypres, Belgium, Lt. Col. John McCrae's "In Flanders Fields" is universally known and representative of the Canadian respect and deference to our veterans. However, the governments responsible for sending forces into harm's way have taken a different opinion than the Canadian population in recent times. The opportunity now exists for a new direction. The shortcomings and shoddy respect shown for veterans by the Harper regime has ended. Where it goes now under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Minister of National Defense Harjit Sajjan and Minister of Veterans Affairs Kent Hehr is of fundamental importance.

Much has been written lately exposing the results of the recent past policies. They are not acceptable to veterans, their families or Canadians in general. Renata D'Aliesio writing in The Globe and Mail since the election has done fine journalism and I give credit to her for much discussed on this episode. Great improvements are needed and time is of the essence. But where to start? Will veterans organizations be invited to speak to committee? Will surviving families be recognized and allowed to contribute?

Former Veteran's Ombudsman, former Commander of Canadian Forces in Afghanistan, retired Colonel Pat Stogran returns to The View Up Here on this special Remebrance Day episode to discuss these issues. We are honoured to welcome back The Rebel Gorilla for his expert perspective on our subject.

Tune in, listen, join the chat room or call in to give your thoughts.

The Pesky Media and News Stories They Won't Tell You About

    in Politics Conservative

I almost feel like today is a show based on the title of a Kevin Trudeau book.  As a matter of fact, when he gets released from prison in 6 or 7 years, he could reinvent himself as a conservative commentator or author and write a book, "News Stories They Don't Want You To Know About."  But naturally, I digress.  Even without talking, I digress.  It's a huge problem.  Anyway, today's show deals a little bit with the Ben Carson attack and backlash, and along not necessarily those lines but along the lines of sharing stories that I feel have some value and importance that the media does not, I'll share what I can squeeze in today.  Things like- "What are the globalists up to"?  "How damaging is immigration to countries?"  "What about TPP?"  "What's the most recent health risk with the homosexual lifestyle?"  "How's the economy really doing"?

Quite possibly, or quite probably I won't hit on all of those today.  But of course the mainstream media is hitting on basically none of them.  So I'll cover what I can today at 4:30 Eastern time and archived after that.

The View Up Here- The New Era begins with the new Cabinet

    in Politics

By the time this show airs, the grand ceremony will be over. Canada will know who is in the first Liberal Cabinet of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The buildup has been a novelty of sorts due to the change in power. A bigger numerical majority in the House of Commons than the one it replaced. Members from every province and territory. Pledges of gender parity and regional representation. A whopping 150 rookies out of 184 MP's. How will the promise of a smaller Cabinet actually play out compared to the bloated reward/threat system we have supposedly done away with.

So many promises, so little time. Senate. Surveillance. Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women. Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Scuttling of the F-35 disaster. Trans-Pacific Partnership. Citizenship. Refugees. International reputation. Climate change. Employment Insurance. Long-form census. Scientific freedom. Democratic and electoral reform. Retirement age rollback to 65. Veterans Affairs. Marijuana.

We will look at who made the cut as Ministers and what they now face to deliver what was sold as the Liberal platform. Tune in, join the chat, call in and input on the "new" Canadian future.

The View Up Here & Mark Bourrie make the new government priority list

    in Politics

November 4 is the day. The new government is sworn in. On one hand we have campaign promises. On the other we have obvious priorities. Do they intersect? How much stupidity will the Trudeau administration be committed to from all the senseless litigation courtesy of unconstitutional Harper legislation? There will be as many different priorities as people you ask. Expectations are a bitch. But a majority insulates against immediate demands. With 150 rookies in caucus, Cabinet will be an interesting selection process.

Mark Bourrie (@MarkBourrie) is an award winning Canadian journalist, best selling author, historian and lecturer at Carleton University and the University of Ottawa. His work has also appeared in many major magazines and newspapers. Mark has a BA in History from the University of Waterloo, a diploma in Public Policy and Administration from the University of Guelph, a Masters in Journalism from Carleton University and a Doctorate in Canadian media history from the University of Ottawa.

Join us as Mark and the intrepid host (haha) discuss how priorities can be gleaned from a massive pile of problems left behind by the CPC gong show. Don't let us skip or omit anything. Call in and let us know!
