Dr. Elisa Medhus on My Life After Death: A Memoir from Heaven

    in Spirituality

Is there life after death? Is there proof of the soul?

Elisa Medhus, a physician and mother of five, received the news any mother could receive. Her 20-year-old son, Erik, committed suicide by taking a .45 caliber handgun and shooting himself in the head in their home. Erik was bipolar.

As a woman of science and skeptical about the soul's survival after death, she began to question her beliefs when inexplicable events began to happen shortly after Erik's death. Erik began to communicate with family, friends and blog members.  After devouring various books on quantum physics explaining the science behind spirituality, her beliefs began to shift. She became a believer. Now, she channels Erik through renowned medium Jamie Butler, asking him questions about death, the afterlife and so much more.

As her blog members join her in this journey toward spiritual understanding, Erik continues to offer not only his insight as an insider on the other side, but also adds some comic relief with his mischievous pranks. She shares her journey in her first book, My Son and the Afterlife: Conversations from the Other Side. Now, Erik has authored his own book, My Life After Death: A Memoir from Heaven. (see Orb photographs attached below taken by Dr. Medhus' daughter.)

In addition to her two books about Erik, Dr. Medhus is also the author of three award-winning parenting books, Raising Children Who Think for Themselves, Hearing is Believing, and Raising Everyday Heroes.

Debut Romance Author Catherine Herzog Joins Kori on the Back Porch

    in Writing

Cat Herzog began writing as a teen to have a way of dealing with a turbulent childhood, afraid someone might read what she journaled, she fictionalized it so no one would know she was talking about herself.  Those stories turned into what would become The Key to Her Heart, but it would take another thirty years before she published The Key to Her Heart.  Now she is working on the sequel Patrick's Rose.

About the book: The Key to Her Heart (The Heart of a Family Book 1)

As Anna's life spirals deeper into the abyss she doesn’t know how to escape, Patrick may be the only thing standing between her and complete destruction.

In her quest to achieve her dreams, Anna becomes a successful model in California in the early seventies and attracts the unwanted attention of powerful, ruthless, Matthew Wolffe, the eldest son of the fashion world’s biggest tycoon. His attention twists into a dark obsession-- Not just harming, but distributing abuse beyond Anna’s worst nightmares. Patrick Rueschel is the boy she left back home when she ran away. His love promises new life.

Between her dark secrets in California and her father’s vow of revenge on The Rueschel family years before when she was a teen, Anna realizes there is no way for Patrick to be part of her life.

As the stakes are driven ever higher, she must choose the dream she wants to pursue and what cost she is willing to pay. Meanwhile, Matthew plays a dangerous game of cat and mouse that threatens to find her no matter where she may run.

Is Patrick's love strong enough to save her? Or must she run away once more—and leave everything behind?

EP#19 Memoir meet Poetry: Kira Lynne Allen crafts debut book in two genres

    in Writing

In May, I interviewed author Kira Lynne Allen about her new book Write This Second out now on Prashanti Press. In this episode, Kira explains how she used various strategic moves to recreate voice and pace in her work. She tells you what she thinks of the publishing process (as opposed to self-publishing) and whether it helped or hurt her work. You'll also hear what obsession fueled her desire to finish the book by October 2014.

Kira is an artist in the most robust sense of the word. In the interview part that is on my editing floor through no fault of its own, we talk about her collage work which she's been doing for years. Actually, her mother also had the talent. In this image which accompanies her blog post, "You Call It A Book, I Call It A Movement or 7 Reasons Why I Founded: Write This Second," we see a young compilation Kira - a mix of real photos and sketch work which she drew herself.

I absolutely loved this book and would read it again, so I advise you to check it out. But in the words of the first book reviewer I knew, "don't take my word for it."

“Kira Lynne Allen’s first full length book of poetry is so gorgeous, so rich in honesty, truth, pain and healing, beauty and rage and humanity, that it is going to change lives. It gives permission, and that means that it gives life. It gives off heat and fresh air. It exposes, encourages, challenges, delights. I found it thrilling.” —Anne Lamott, New York Times bestselling author of, Small Victories: Spotting Improbable Moments of Grace; and Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life
