NYC Mayoral Campaign: DeBlasio vs Lhota
Comrade DeBlasio who succeeded Nanny Bloomberg as mayor of New York City has a not so-secret plan to expand the City's welfare rolls. He's dropping the work requirement for recipients to receive welfare and foodstamps. This reverses a 20 year old policy that reduced the number of public assistance beneficiaries by nearly 80 percent. But now it's gone. That's progressive progress!
Gold and silver are going up on the last day of the month. What a switch from normal slam downs that used to take place on the last trading day of the month. Something different is definitely taking place.
I was in New York City for my sister's wedding this weekend. Apart from the fact that I visit regularly to see my kids, I would prefer to stay away as much as possible. The first signs of deterioration are setting in. LaGuardia Airport is again becoming a homeless shelter. They're taking over the food court and a number of waiting rooms throughout the facility. Mayor Giuliani stopped this practice over a decade ago and Nanny Bloomberg started rolling it back. Now Comrade DeBlasio is intent on making New York's public terminals fullscale shelters and I'm sure he's proud of the effort.
What does it mean for progressive politics that Zephyr Teachout and Tim Wu won 35% and 40% of the New York state vote, respectively, in an almost-unfunded campaign against entrenched Democratic incumbent Andrew Cuomo?
What does it mean for office-holders like NY Mayor Bill DeBlasio to have supported Cuomo and his conservative-leaning running mate Kathy Hochul?
Gaius Publius & RJ Eskow explore the consequences of Democratic party leaders' continued espousal of unpopular positions in a time of progressive change. What does the New York Democratic primary battle tell us? What does it mean for the party in 2016?

Well the New York Comic Con is just a few days away and it's time for another Grindhouse Mixtape (The Comic Shoppe+Afronerd Radio) broadcast-this Saturday at 6pm EST. And were expecting noted writer/filmmaker, David Walker to stop by to discuss his latest Shaft project with Dynamite Comics. So check out your Podcast Avengers-Daryll B., Capt. Kirk and Dburt as they unravel the following issues: the latest rumor concerning the highly anticipated J.J. Abrams' helmed Star Wars reboot (hint it has something to do with Luke Skywalker); the crew give their breakdown of the latest in fall season TV shows (Resurrection, Sleepy Hollow, Scorpion, Korra, Blacklist, SHIELD, etc); Do the Adam Sandler and Crouching Tiger Netflix deals spell the death knell for theater owners? ; and what sounds like a definite 21st century problem, who inherits your digital estate when you meet your maker (if you believe in an afterlife)?; was DC/Warner correct in apologizing for licensed t-shirts that many interpreted as sexist? ; a White lesbian couple sues a sperm bank for a mixup with a Black donor; Dburt continues his rant about NYC liberalism vs accepted thug life in the DeBlasio administration; is the Secret Service really incompetent or are they setting up the nation's first Black president for a tragic fall?; and lastly, Dburt has multiple anecdotes about Dr. Henry L. Gates' geneaology specials, Louis Armstrong and Dr. Charles Drew-if time permits. Call live at 646-915-9620.
"I believe there’s something inherently dangerous when something real becomes mythic. Because when faced with a myth we can’t win. So the mythic must be exposed for what it is. So we can believe in ourselves. Because it’s only what’s in us…the drive to be mythic…that matters." -Lex Luthor
Carl Schramm is a professor at Syracuse University and is as pro-capitalist as they come. He sees much of the wealth destruction going on in New York City and State and can't believe it's come down to this. Comrade DeBlasio has declared war on the rich and now New York City is going to pay the price. Already over $1 billion in Florida real estate has been purchased by those seeking refuge from his policies. The problems will only mount as just 5,000 people pay nearly 30 percent of the City's personal income tax. FSN's prediction is that the City will be bankrupt in 3 years of less.

In their haste to beat down gold in the wake of the Fed meeting, looks like it wasn't quite enough to keep it down. While Da Boyz always like to slam gold on the last day of the month whenever possible, it seems to be snapping back right away.
Keep your eyes focused on the political scene. The same pattern that brought you Comrade DeBlasio is likely to bring you Comrade Warren as the Democratic nominee.
Much more here than we have space for. So keep listening.
New York City needs $50 billion for infrastructure over the next 5 years. But what about the children? This is where the obvious failings of New York's first openly communist mayor are going to shine. The money just isn't there and while Gotham crumbles, he's playing his fiddle and worrying about universal pre-k, a proven failure. And what's with the war on E-cigs. These seemingly benign little products of technology offer millions of smokers the hope of finally kicking the habit, but government just can't seem to allow it. That and more on this edition.
Konbanwa to our learned and metaphysically fit listening audience! Welcome to another fiery fact finding mission, courtesy of Afronerd Radio's Mid Week in Review airing this Wednesday at 7:30pm. Join your hosts, Dburt and Captain Kirk as they discuss the following current event laden issues: Dburt finally checked out Godzilla and they became great friends; Chirlane McCray, the First Lady of New York causes a stir when she disclosed that her foray into motherhood was not a natural fit (and did NY media report her story fairly?) ; and in yet another local NY/Long Island political dust up, a liberal Nassau County legislator is being called to resign for stating that an adjacent neighborhood was bad "because African-Americans live there”; a Black Voices piece reports that the job market discriminates against recent AA college grads; hopefully (and finally) we'll get a chance to discuss a NY Times article that highlighted a proposal to add PC coding to the elementary school curriculum; Ahmir Thompson aka Questlove has written a rather provocative six part essay, courtesy of Vulture.com on the failures of current Hip Hop culture and lastly, is "Hood Disease" a real phenomenon?
