Today's session will identify some of the pitfalls that often accompany the death of a loved one. You've seen it. People sometimes act badly during this season of loss. What does it look like? What are the causes? How can the uglies be avoided. This broadcast will take an honest look at these areas and address them in helpful, concrete and practical ways. Along with Coach Liz, a special guest, Vanessa Buckson will help us with ways we can "Rise Above" the uglies and preserve loving and lasting relationships among family and friends. Don't miss this episode on Avoiding the "Uglies" After the Death of a Loved One.
Death is a part of life, and the truth for today is that sometimes we must live on after a precious loved one has died. God cares about us as we mourn, and he sees our broken hearts. He also instructs us to care about people who are suffering. It says in the Bible to mourn with those who mourn.
After a death of a loved one everyone has a story and tips to help you feel better. They even go so far as to say how long your should be experiencing certain emotions and how to 'click' them off. What happens when the magic wand just does not wash away the feelings you have in your heart? Maybe it is not a switch that goes on or off.
My guest today is Vashon Sarkisian, author of Finding Joy After Loss in which she outlines seven steps to remembering your joy. Vashon gives us action steps, doing things, writing things, believing things, motion, and not remaining stagnant in the space of grief but remodeling your emotions and thoughts around where you are and how to get to where you wish.
Life is a precious gift, it is here for as long as possible but we do all have to transition. How we affect others is the key to their joy of life.
Please join us for a compassionate discussion of grief, death and joy. We will have your back and be honored to listen to your story or have you just sit with the words we speak to lighten your load. You don't have to carry it all alone, God does not take baggage when you are at his gate, so lighten up and live the gift of life you are given.
Vashon's website is here and you can purchase the book on her website.
SHOW NOTES: The HELP! SITUATION SPOTLIGHT™ series addresses challenges, obstacles and problems (real or perceived) that are preventing a person from surpassing their goals! In this series, we shine the light on challenges that community members have shared. This episode is, “A Work Colleague Has Experienced A Tragic Death of A Loved One. What Should I Do?”
Life. Death is a reality for all of us. A tragic death (accident, homicide, suicide, etc.) is not. What do you do if a tragic death becomes a reality for a work colleague?
1) Be there.
If you have experienced a tragic death in your life you have an advantage (in some respects) when your work colleague experiences one in their lives. The compassion, empathy and understanding that a tragic death survivor is able to provide to another person is an asset.
The natural aversion to the colleague (from people who have not experienced a real life tragic death themselves) is understandable at some level. We all hear about tragic death. It is on the news. It is in our media in film, music, poetry, video games, etc., yet that is an abstract awareness devoid of the devastation of the actual child, spouse, friend, boss, parent, partner, that we know who is gone.
The most ‘helpful’ things you should do, I repeat:
1) Be there.
I learned about these types of situations when my only sibling committed suicide.
With a tragic death there are also the extra issues to deal with in many instances of media inquires and coverage. This forces public attention on the survivors. In many instances it is the only public information about their loved one and it defines their entire life into often graphic and
For many children, adults and parents within the cleft and craniofacial community, grief and sadness over their physical anomalies can be a heavy burden to carry around. Add that to whatever life brings along ... from loss of a relationship, friendship or death of a loved one ... and the grief can feel overwhelming. In fact, it could turn into depression, repressed feelings and lead people to harm themselves. On this week's "CleftCast," host Joe Rutland talks about the topic of grief and shares a couple of personal stories that hopefully relate with listeners.
When faced with the death of a loved one, what do you do next? Are you frozen in time and just being lead around by what others may suggest to you? Do you have regrets in not having set a plan for what happens after you die with your loved ones? Your life is turned upside down and there is so much emotion, pain and suffering from the loss of life that many people seem to zone out and not make the best decisions about 'what next'.
My guest is Mike Boyd, author of How to Bankroll a Funeral Without Breaking the Bank where he teaches us about the language around end of life planning prior to an event. Mike share his tips about pre-planning, costs, types of funerals, and how to know what decision might be best for you.
The reason we are doing this show is; in the last decade, due to economic issues, increased death rate or family members being scattered around the country, a death in the family may cause a rift that will last for many more years with the surviving family members. Yes, death and funerals are not the best choice of topics but they will affect us all, no one is exempt from this event. Mr. Boyd helps us make decisions that are based on a business aspect while we are able to without a crisis emotional component that may leave us with regrets.
Mr. Boyd has a website here and he is a consumer advocate on Funeral Planning. Contact him if you wish to have him speak to your group. His book can be purchased here.

In this Notorious USA collection, Death of a Cheerleader, New York Times bestselling author Gregg Olsen and true crime journalist Kevin M. Sullivan write about notorious crimes in the Bluegrass State. In a scene right out of Hitchcock’s “Rear Window,” a young woman vanishes from a beach on a summer day and a neighbor views the abduction through his telescope. A newly wed disposes of his bride but doesn’t know what to do with her head. Selling tickets at a drive-in movie theater proves deadly. And a parent’s worst nightmare becomes reality – their young daughter disappears from a sleepover. DEATH OF A CHEERLEADER-Kevin M. Sullivan
