Get ready for an hour of candid, thought-provoking book and author talk. On this episode of the Literary New England Radio Show, we feature:
Jill Alexander Essbaum on her striking debut Hausfrau. Described as a 'modern-day Anna Karenina,' it's the story of 30-something Anna, an American living with her husband in Switzerland, who tries to pull her life together and find happiness through a series of new experiences, including German language classes, Jungian analysis and a series of sexual affairs.
Sally Hepworth on The Secrets of Midwives. Neva, a third-generation midwife, is pregnant and determined to hide the baby's father's identity. Yet her mother finds it impossible to let this secret rest. For Neva's grandmother, the situation sends her back 60 years to a secret that eerily mirrors her granddaughter's--which, if revealed, will have life-changing consequences for them all.
David James Poissant on The Heaven of Animals. Nominated for the PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize for Debut Fiction, named one of Amazon’s Best Short Story Collections of 2014 and recipient of numerous other awards and recognitions, this debut short story collection explores the tenuous bonds of devotion and family as each of Poissant's strikingly true-to-life characters are in some way tested by the often-brutal power of love.
We'll also help you get your read on for next week's Boston Marathon! We talk with Rachel Cass, head buyer at the Harvard Book Store, about unforgettable running books--fiction, non-fiction and those ideal for children.
Hosted by Cindy Wolfe Boynton. Visit the Literary New England blog for more book giveaways, author talk, event information and to listen to past episodes -- book-tatstic updates posted regularly!
Known for his powerful, smooth vocals, DAVID JAMES arrived on to the country music scene in early 2013 with his debut EP release This Must Be It. His unique blend of country rock, paired with his electrifying voice and an unrelenting pursuit of making each performance better than the last, have been generating fans and acclaim from coast to coast. Born in the musical hotbed of Winnipeg, David didn't have a traditional upbringing. "I was exposed to a lot of different things growing up. My mom was a saint, my father was sort of a rebel, and I guess I kinda landed somewhere in the middle. I often tell people I was born into gospel and raised by rock n' roll, but I think it's given me a wider perspective on things and a lot of stories to tell."
With a voice that goes down like moonshine – strong but with a smooth finish - singer-songwriter EMILY REID effortlessly blurs the line between alternative country and indie pop. The journey began for Emily in 2009 when she migrated from Victoria, BC to Nashville. Three years later, Emily released her self-titled debut album: a collection of ten “unapologetically honest and unashamedly catchy” pop songs that chronicled her transition to the south (Delgado). In 2013, Emily’s southern soul found its voice. In working with producer Eric Masse, the material draws inspiration from the likes of James Taylor and Allison Krauss.
David and Emily are part of the CCMA (Canadian Country Music Association) Discovery Program. The mandate of the program is to create a national program to support country music artists to reach their potential by providing educational, mentorship, networking, and exposure opportunities.

Mr. James does not predict the outcomes of games however he has predicted the career paths of sports stars such as Tony Romo, Tom Brady and Rajon Rondo. He has become a guide for teams in several prominent organizations to help them with drafting and free agency signings and all with a winning record.
We will talk with David James about several stars of today as well as if he has any hidden secrets he'd be willing to reveal about posible stars of the future.
After our guest we will transition into the world of Mixed Martial Arts and talk about Donald Cerrone's impressive victory over Jim Miller, the goings on between the UFC and Gina Carano as well as future fights involving Vitor Belfort, Nate Diaz and of course the match up at UFC on FOx 12 between Matt Brown and Robbie Lawler.

MIKE DENNEY is President of MDM Recordings Inc., an independent recording company founded in 2008 and located in Toronto. One of his biggest dreams for his artists is to help enhance their success by securing them international recognition, and he has made this goal a priority. “My mission is to support, help nurture and grow the careers of the numerous artists that I work with on a day in and day out basis. I want to help them achieve their goals and dreams, while achieving mine with theirs.”
A 25 year veteran of the music industry, Mike believes that being passionate and success-driven about music (or anything that you do) supersedes wanting a large pay check and material advances. “I have always been very driven to succeed. Years ago it was material things, now it’s a passion for what I do.”
What he looks for in new artists is simple, “I want to represent talent that can really play and perform from their core, their true soul,” he explains. “I want artists that are hard-working and driven by the music, inspired to constantly perfect their craft. To me this is the true definition of talent.”
Announced in July 2015, in a country-wide reveal, 2015 marks another outstanding year for MDM Recordings and its artists, with a total of sixteen CCMA nominations, across 15 categories.
Substantiating her claim to the modern day Shania Twain status, Jess Moskaluke (an MDM artist and current CCMA Female Artist of the Year) continues her success streak with 2015 CCMA Female Artist of the Year, Album of the Year and Single of the Year nominations.
Tune in to hear Mike chat with about all the latest news in the MDM world!
