This week, we'll go back to 2011 for an interview with one of the better reports from an embed this decade. For those who listened to All Things Considered on NPR in 2011, you caught an outstanding series on the 3rd Battalion 5th Marines – the Darkhorse Battalion — the Marine unit that suffered the highest casualty rate of any Marine unit during the 10-year Afghan war.
Our guest for the full hour is the journalist who brought the American people that story - Tom Bowman, NPR National Desk reporter covering the Pentagon.
In his current role, Bowman has traveled to Iraq and Afghanistan often for month-long visits and embedded with U.S. Marines and soldiers.
Before coming to NPR in April 2006, Bowman spent nine years as a Pentagon reporter at The Baltimore Sun. Altogether he was at The Sun for nearly two decades, covering the Maryland Statehouse, the U.S. Congress, the U.S. Naval Academy, and the National Security Agency (NSA).
The boys from "The Quarters" are back talking the 2014-2015 NBA season. On tonight's episode we discuss:

3.Outside of the top 5 expected playoff teams in the East (CLE, Chi, WASH, TOR, CHA) is there any team (or teams) you feel confident will make the playoffs?
4.Can any team challenge the Spurs in the West?
5.Can any team other than Chicago (or even Chicago) challenge the Cavs in the East?
6.Darkhorse title contender in East/West
1.Most likely star player to get traded and a potential destination?

White Chapel is a vampire series told from the point of view of 3 vampires – Allister Connacher, Arianna Grayson and the infamous Jack the Ripper. Looking to entice Grayson, an FBI agent who is tracking him down as the serial killer Allister the Annihilator, to become his vampire progeny, Connacher relays the story of how he became what he was – a monster – and how he was very much like her. He pursued Jack the Ripper, only to discover the truth of his evil. Written by JC De La Torre & Martin Dunn. Artwork by Derrick Fish.

Robert Tolan Jr. Returning Hero
Today I have the real privilege to talk to US Army Specialist Robert Tolan Jr.
SPC Tolan just returned from a war tour in Afghanistan with the Charlie Troop 4-9 CAV “Crazy Horse”
This is a special show for me because back around Christmas, I sent two US flags to Afghanistan to be flown there with “Operation Crazy Horse” with one of them being donated to a returning serviceman, and of course mine coming back to me. He returned to a hero’s welcome his Arroyo Grande home.
A side yet very Important part of the story is the wonderful organization Welcome Home Military Heroes, Our Mission is to WELCOME HOME all of our LOCAL returning servicemen & women and THANK them for their choice to serve our great country. Welcome Home Military Heroes is run by a wonderful lady Cheryl Tolan (who happens to a very proud Momma of my guest)
Robert Tolan joined the United States Army in January 2012. After five months of training that took place at Fort Benning, Georgia he graduated and earned his sabers with the United States Cavalry Scout as an E-1 Private. He then went on to Fort Hood, Texas and joined the 1st Cavalry Division, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th Squadron, 9th Cavalry. He stayed there for just over a year and in July 2013 he deployed to RC East Afghanistan. He was deployed for 8 months, 2 months longer than his unit. He and 7 other soldiers from his unit volunteered to stay behind in Afghanistan to help the 10th Mountain Division fill in numbers and help train the 101st Airborne unit that was coming in to replace them. He returned on March 3rd, 2014 back into Fort Hood, Texas.
A dash of Kline and a pinch of Face and you have the recipe for a fun episode 219. The Broncos are making it rain in free agency, the Avalanche are a feisty darkhorse in the West, True Detective ended not as sharply as we hoped, and Kline wears short shorts. We talk about it. And other odd stuff in typical VSR fashion.
Today I am at the Northwood Memorial and Gratitude Park in Irvine CA.
I am taking some pictures of my George S. Patton with the Sentinels of those fallen in Iraq and Afghanistan. I wanted to tell a story about Luxembourg, George S. Patton and Afghanistan. I am donating this flag to the Patton Museum on Feb 8. 2014. I visited the memorial in November 2013 when I shipped 2 flags to Afghanistan via welcomehomemilitaryheros.org and "Operation Crazy Horse. I brought my original retirement flag to the memorial because.
As always I invite all to Listen and thank you
