March 13: Like A Puff Of White Smoke

    in Sports

Like a puff of white smoke, Mike "the Buzz-saw" Asti and George "the Howitzer" Gerbo have arrived to send shockwaves. If white smoke can precede the introduction of a pope, why can't it present sports media's most dominating duo?
While Catholics are celebrating a shakeup, some NFL fans are mourning the chaos that has been the recent player movement. Baltimore's chances to repeat as Super Bowl champions has gone from difficult to next to impossible, after losing several key components, such as Anquan Boldin and the man groomed to replace Ray Lewis, Dannell Ellerbe. The Ravens haven't been alone in experiencing an exodus. Pittsburgh saw Mike Wallace and Rashard Mendenhall depart for greener pastures. Percy Harvin is now a Seahawk and Wes Welker jumped from Tom Brady and Patriots to Peyton Manning and the Broncos. What does all this activity mean for the new landscape of power in the NFL? Can perennial powers contend without their star player? Are these players enough to push teams over the hump?
Despite March Madness, a time for basketball craziness, being surrounded by football news, the hardwood insanity is not to be denied. How will be the conference tournaments impact the NCAA Tournament selections? What squads can surprise and leapfrog off of the bubble? There will even be a retrospective tribute paid to the Big East, as the last true Big East Tournament continues. Mike will try to contain George's tears.
Finally, the beast Lakers Dwight Howard is finally here. What will his pounding of the franchise he scorned, do for LA's playoff quest? Turn away Magic fans (if there are still any), Mike will be mean to you.
Team USA is soaring in the World Baseball Classic. What would a US WBC Title mean?
All others go up in smoke, while the Howitzer and Buzz-saw conquer sports radio, one day, at a time....

RAVENS PLAYOFF EXTRA PRESENTED BY FANSPEAK

    in Sports

Join host Alan Zlotorzynski of Fanspeak.com for RAVENS PLAYOFF EXTRA on Tuesday night.
Ravens linebacker Dannell Ellerbe joins the show to discuss the big win as well as the upcoming AFC Divisional game versus the Denver Broncos.
On Sunday, before a sellout M&T Bank Stadium crowd that celebrated and saluted LB Ray Lewis in his final home game, the Ravens held rookie phenom Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts without a touchdown, winning 24-9
After a scoreless first quarter, Baltimore scored first on a 23-yard Justin Tucker field goal. The Colts’ Adam Vinatieri matched that with a 47-yarder before Ravens FB Vonta Leach made it 10-3 on a 2-yard touchdown surge.
Behind a very stingy red zone defense led by Lewis’ 13 tackles, the Ravens would never relinquish the lead. On offense, QB Joe Flacco averaged 23.5 yards per completion in the game and WR Anquan Boldin set a Ravens’ playoff record with 145 receiving yards. Rookie RB Bernard Pierce, whose 43-yard run set up Baltimore’s final touchdown, rushed for 103 yards on just 13 carries.
Head coach John Harbaugh’s team has now won a playoff game in five consecutive post seasons and Alan will have all of the game highlights, as well as locker room interviews and of course, DO NOT MISS DANNELL ELLERBE at 8:30!
Following the coverage of this past weekend’s win, Alan will look ahead to Saturday’s showdown in the Mile High City and tell you why the Ravens are the perfect team to pull the upset vs. Peyton Manning and company.

Showtime is 8:00 p.m. on the FANSPEAK RADIO NETWORK and will run until 10:00
