  • Guest:Michael Shaw/Production Designer/Orange Is the New Black/Billions

    in Movies

Michael’s impressive Production Design credits on over 21 feature films include the award winning “Boys Don’t Cry,” “You Can Count on Me,” “August Rush,” “The Private Lives of Pippa Lee,” and “Cop Out.” Michael Shaw settled in New York City after studying painting, sculpture & film at the Rhode Island School of Design. While constructing scenery by day to support his fine art career by night, one of Michael’s first design jobs; a short film titled “THE ROOM,” won top prizes at Cannes, Sundance and MOMA. Once bitten, Michael realized Production Design was the perfect career to mold all his creative interests together. Consequently, Michael approaches every film as an artist. Michael’s first feature as Production Designer was the celebrated film “Heavy,” directed by James Mangold, starring then ingénue Liv Tyler. The film won the Special Jury prize at Cannes and the New York Times singled out Michael’s design work stating “An impressive consistency links the crisp specific look of Heavy.” Michael balances his design career between feature films, commercials and television. His television work includes three seasons of the ABC police comedy “The Job” staring Dennis Leary, three seasons of the Showtime series “The Big C” starring Laura Linney and three seasons of the highly acclaimed Netflix series “Orange is The New Black” staring Taylor Schilling. Michael is currently in production on the first season of the TV show “Billions” starring Paul Giamatti and Damion Lewis for Showtime. You can email your questions to 123filmeasy@gmail.com or follow us on Twitter @123Film

As a young child, K.N.U, and everyone around him, knew that he truly was a different breed. He grew up in mostly small town settings, but moved a lot and ended up staying in Brown County Ohio ages 5-15 for the most part. K.N.U was so different from the rest of the people in his area, that he chose to stay at home and listen to music to escape more often then not. K.N.U listened to Rock&Roll all throughout his childhood. At the age of 15 he moved to Manchester Ky, where he decided to try his hand at both drums and bass guitar. He enjoyed both but decided neither of which suited him best. At the same time of realizing such, he moved back to Brown and Clermont County OH. He went to school like a normal kid, he did work for family friends to support himself financially, when one day he decided he wanted something more out of life, he never had an answer when people would ask what he wanted to be when he grew up, and decided it was time to find an answer. He took off into the world and researched everything he could possibly think of, and the only jobs that interested him were pertaining to art. After trying instruments, tattooing, drawing, painting, and more art, he finally decided those were hobbies rather then careers, at least for him. Then one day, he picked up a pad of paper and a pencil, turned on a beat, and wrote his first "rap song". He recorded a video of him delivering his flow on his phone camera, and uploaded it to "Facebook". The next thing you know, he became known as an artist, and all of his friends and more where asking for more. He then invested in equipment and started a team named "Ride Er Die" with no knowledge of sound quality, business strategies, or any knowledge in the music world whatsoever at that. K.N.U recorded roughly 20 tracks and uploaded them to "youtube"(which are still currently uploaded).
