Put down the Prozac and Pick Up a Project!
As we become increasingly dependent on technology to make our lives easier, we lose the ease and find ourselves angst, overwhelmed and unaware.
There is a quiet revolution going on wherein people are choosing to live "handmade" lives. Artisans and everyday crafters are finding a renewed satisfaction in making something with their own hands. The physical and mental benefits in handwork bring about contemplation, serenity and mindfulness.
Using a potpourri approach, Maggie Oman Shannon demonstrates that you can "craft the craziness" away for calm, clarity, comfort, contemplation, connection wtih others and/or spirit to reflect and commune within and with the God of your understanding.
Creativity is a spiritual journey. By immersing ourselves in a creative activity, we can quiet those voices around and in us and enter into the stillness that characterizes prayer and the "house of love". Whether cooking, sewing, knitting, gardening or scrapbooking, your intention to create space to do so is all that's needed and the beneftis are as active as sitting in a church monastery.
Whether you call yourself an artist or craftperson, or neither, we are all creative and through art- and craft-making, we can commune with the soul and the Divine. From the ingredients of everyday life we can find the tools to create a spiritual practice

Xavier White grew up listening to his grandfather playing the drums and his mother playing the best of R. Kelly and Usher. Interestingly his focus in his younger years was not of R&B, but of punk rock. Being bi-racial, with a Scottish father and an African American mother, he had the best of both worlds. His favorite punk rock bands consisted of Green Day, Simple Plan, and Linkin Park.Confused in his younger years, he chose to write music to anything he found suitable for his tempo of music. Around the age of 16, Xavier contended in his high school talent show and sang one of his favorite songs at the time, “So Sick” by Ne-Yo. Placing in 2nd place gave Xavier an idea of what he needed to improve on in the future. Being a fast learner, he promised himself he will win 1st place in the talent show before graduating high school. In Xavier’s senior year, he won 1st place singing and showcasing his powerful vocals with "My Girl" by The Temptations. Xavier released his first EP at the age of 23 called “Our Last Memories.” Between his high school career and his current projects, Xavier has utilized the time to focus on crafting his voice and lyrics. He is currently hitting main stream media and plans on winning a Grammy award in the near future. Currently, his single “New York Times” is garnering major attention from fans and media alike. Xavier’s new EP, Cancer Vs. Gemini, is currently in the works of being released over the summer.
One of the most difficult aftereffects of brain injury is losing oneself. Depending on the injury and which part of the brain is impacted determines the type of emotional and behavioral change in one’s personality. A person who was agreeable, complacent, reasonable, and calm before the injury may change drastically to one who is violent, depressive, or struggles with anger management. These effects are not easy for others to understand – BUT, have you thought how difficult it must be for the survivor? My panel, M. S. survivor, Lisa Dryer and Brain Injury survivor, GeorgeAnna Bell will join me to discuss this sensitive topic.
Every TBI survivor and caregiver has encountered a fork in the road that has diverted his or her life-plan. A car accident, a fall from the roof, doing one more chin-up, or a door literally slamming one in the face are just some causes of traumatic brain injury. College plans, walking down the aisle in the perfect dress, or the coveted job quickly slip from reality as dreams turn to struggle. These unexpected life-happenings that divert one from his or her chosen path in life can be devastating. But as Yogi Berra once said, "If you come to a fork in the road, take it." Life is all about choices!

Inspired by the HBO movie "Confirmation" today we discuss physical abuse, sexual abuse, abuse of power and the necessity to escape abuse with a savvy, strategic self-preserving plan and assistance. Anita Hill as portrayed in "Confirmation" by actress Kerry Washington, known for her staring role in Scandal, images a calm, educated, self-aware, gracious and savvy woman who greeted the unwanted sexual conversations from Justice Clarence Thomas with rationale and social awareness. Anita Hill's bravery and straight-forward discussion of the events led to an increased awareness that women are to be treated with respect in all domains of life, work, home, and in media. This pertinent discussion casts its shadows on the current signs of misogyny embedded in the antagonistic attacks by Donald Trump on women in general and public figures in particular when he freely and openly ridicules women for their intelligence, beauty co-efficients, qualifications, training, education and experience. He unwarrantedly and openly attacks professionals including highly educated, experienced and knowledgeable individuals like Hillary Clinton. This is not about politics but about equality of male and female expressions of respect and what role women play in that on-going, and improving dialogue about overt, violent and covert forms of abuse.
