Corey Parker: Building Inner City Programs

    in Sports

     Corey Parker Coaching Bio:

I grew up on the Northeast side of Detroit. Attended High School at St Martin DePorres where I was a 4-year letterman at DB and on 3 state championships teams as a DePorres Eagle: 1 in Football 96' and 2 in Basketball 98'-99'. I finished my career a Two Time All Catholic, All League award winner, and a 2nd team All state DB.

After High School, I received a full scholarship from Eastern Michigan where I became a 3-year letterman and a two-year starter in the defensive backfield.

One feather in my hat that I can continue to be thankful for as a young coach is that while I was at Eastern Michigan, I learned form some of the best defensive minds in college football like, Bob Diaco, Mike Elston and Tim Rose.

After college, I attempted professional football however I was not picked in the 06' NFL draft so I started coaching.

My first stop was at U of D Jesuit working Coach Scott Merchant as The DB and WR coach. I then moved on to Ann Arbor Huron working under Coach Joel Przygodski also as the DB and WR coach. I then received a promotion as the Defensive Coordinator at Inkster high school with my High School Coach Greg Carter.

After a deep run into the MHSAA State Championship, I took another promotion as the Head Football Coach of River Rouge High School. Since taking over at River Rouge, we have made four consecutive playoff appearances and won three conference titles. In addition we have sent countless young men off to D1, D2 and D3 schools to help support our community and further their education.

In 2013 I was recognized as Regional Coach of The Year.

Stop Child Abuse Now (SCAN) - 1106

    in Self Help

Tonight's special guest is Elisabeth Corey from Richmond, Virginia, a returning NAASCA family member who is a survivor of severe childhood sex abuse and trafficking. She's here to talk about her new web site and services at: BeatingTrauma.com. "My childhood was not a childhood, she explains. "In my family, men had sex with little girls. It was our normal. It was our culture. And it was generational. My parents grew up with it. Their parents grew up with it. Most of the victims in our family didn't even remember it because the trauma caused memory loss. We were a family of traumatized individuals who were doing whatever it took to survive .. usually at the expense of the others." Elisabeth goes on, "My parents, uncles and grandparents started sexually abusing me when I was 2 years old. This was necessary to break me. I was indoctrinated in to a way of life. I was brainwashed. But there was a problem. As I got older, they realized I was a talker. They had not successfully broken me. I was actually telling people. The good news for them .. nobody believed me." Over the years, Elisabeth has worked with many organizations on advocacy, and now offers services herself at BeatingTrauma.com. She focuses on trauma theory, research and practice, but from a survivor perspective. She includes interviews with other survivors and guest blog posts from clinicians.
