While Europe was experiencing its Dark Ages, a period of intellectual, cultural and economic regression from the sixth to the 13th centuries, Africans were experiencing an almost continent-wide renaissance after the decline of the Nile Valley civilizations of Egypt and Nubia.
The leading civilizations of this African rebirth were the Axum Empire, the Kingdom of Ghana, the Mali Empire, the Songhai Empire, the Ethiopian Empire, the Mossi Kingdoms and the Benin Empire.
The Aksum or Axum Empire was an important military power and trading nation in the area that is now Eritrea and northern Ethiopia, existing from approximately 100 to 940 A.D.
At its height, it was one of only four major international superpowers of its day along with Persia, Rome and China. Axum controlled northern Ethiopia, Eritrea, northern Sudan, southern Egypt, Djibouti, Western Yemen, and southern Saudi Arabia, totaling 1.25 million square kilometers, almost half the size of India. Axum traded and projected its influence as far as China and India, where coins minted in Axum were discovered in 1990.When European merchant ships began to visit West Africa from the 15th century onwards, Benin came to control the trade between the inland peoples and the Europeans on the coast. When the British tried to expand their own trade in the 19th century, the Benin warriors killed their envoys.

Today we are live from 825 8th ave between 49th and West 50th Street, Two Worldwide Plaza is a post-war skyscraper. The 39-floor building in Midtown West was completed by William Zeckendorf Jr. in 1989. Today, it is part of a three-building design that stretches an entire block between 8th and 9th Avenue from 49th to 50th Street.
The building's postmodern exterior is perhaps one of the most remarkable building features. The old-fashioned brick is modernized by a copper roof and glass pyramid at the top. At certain times of the day, the sun hits the sleek rows of windows to the point that the facade shines like metal. Terraces abound in the majority of the 455 apartments, each equipped with granite countertops in modern kitchens, marble baths, and 11-foot ceilings.
The interior garden courtyard reserved for residents is matched with the mid-block public plaza housing a diverse array of greenery as well a fountain with elaborate statues, and a nearby cafe.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Diaspora Group Commends House Chairman for Urging Investigation into Rwandan Human Rights Abuses
At Hearing, Rep. Chris Smith Questions President Kagame’s Role in Killings, Disappearances
WASHINGTON, DC (May 20, 2015) – Democracy in Rwanda Now (DIRN), a non-profit, non-governmental organization, on Wednesday praised the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, Global Human Rights and International Organizations for urging an investigation into Rwanda’s human rights record and President Paul Kagame’s role in a series of troubling events including killings and disappearances of dissidents.
Subcommittee Chairman Chris Smith (R-NJ) called some of the recent reported abuses “serious crimes” and said the international community needs to take a “very aggressive look” into what President Paul Kagame’s complicity was in the disappearances and killings of dissidents. “If there are death squads being deployed to kill the diaspora and political opponents...we need to get to the bottom of this,” he said.
The chairman made the remarks at a hearing Wednesday called “Developments in Rwanda,” which he called to examine “persistent, credible reports of human rights abuses by this government both inside and outside the country,” and “how this reality impacts US policy toward Rwanda.”
“Any investigation into the assassinations, attempted assassinations and disappearances of Kagame dissidents is welcome news,” said one of the hearing witnesses David Himbara, a former top economic aide to Kagame and coordinator for the North American branch of DIRN. “I applaud Chairman Smith and Ranking Member Karen Bass for their leadership on this very serious and important issue. The Rwandan people deserve to live in a free and democratic society without fear
