Coffee Party Book Club - The Stronghold: by Professor Thomas Schaller

    in Politics

How Republicans Captured Congress but Surrendered the White House.  Once the party of presidents, the GOP in recent elections has failed to pull together convincing national majorities. Republicans have lost four of the last six presidential races and lost the popular vote in five of the last six. In their lone victory, the party incumbent won—during wartime—by the slimmest of margins. In this fascinating and important book, Thomas Schaller examines national Republican politics since President Ronald Reagan left office in 1989. From Newt Gingrich’s ascent to Speaker of the House through the defeat of Mitt Romney in 2012, Schaller traces the Republican Party’s institutional transformation and its broad consequences, not only for Republicans but also for America. Here is Schaller’s message: as the GOP became more conservative, it became more Congress-centered, and as its congressional wing grew more powerful, the party grew more conservative. His belief is that this “dangerous loop”, unless broken, may signal a future of increasing radicalization, dependency on a shrinking pool of voters, and less viability as a true national party.  It’s a thought-provoking idea that we invite our Coffee Party USA members to consider by reading the book and joining us for a discussion with the author.  A link for purchasing the book can be found on our Coffee Party USA website.

On Monday, March 30 at 8:30pm EST, you will have your chance to ask Professor Schaller about his take on the direction of the Republican Party and what it means for all of us as we host him on our special monthly BlogTalk Radio program event.  Mark you calendar now!

"Education Destruction, A Continuing Saga" on "I Take LIBERTY With My Coffee"

    in Politics

Our Public Education is under relentless attack.  In Wisconsin, Governor Scott Walker slashed the education budget in favor of privatization, standardized testing, and a basketball stadium. In New York, the Board of Regents appointed MaryEllen Elia as its Education Commissioner.  Elia, who was ran out of Florida, has long ties to Common Core and Standardized Testing.  The recent Opt-Out movement that was so large in New York essentially had its face slapped. Georgia and Wisconsin both are advocating for a workforce instead of education and a growing movement to certify teachers without requiring the formal education.  The two major political parties are behaving essentially the same. We are joined again by Marla Kilfoyle of Badass Teachers, http://www.badassteacher.org/ to discuss the many issues destroying our education system. Marla offers the educator and activist perspective. BAT's mission "to give voice to every teacher who refuses to be blamed for the failure of our society to erase poverty and inequality through education and refuse to accept assessments, tests and evaluations created and imposed by corporate driven entities that have contempt for authentic teaching and learning." So grab a cup of coffee and join us.  Longtime Activist, Journalist, Coffee Party USA Board of Director & Radio Host, Bobby Rodrigo's show "I Take LIBERTY With My Coffee" on Coffee Party USA Radio airs Sunday Morning at 8:30AM. Advocating engagement Bobby points out the Constitution is the Rule of Law and why it should remain so. Money in Politics, the Political Party Machine, and partisan blind allegiance is on full display as he advocates against the erosion of Constitutional Protections in the name of corruption & tyranny. "If we focused on following the Constitution we would solve many of the ills of our society.”

"Medical Marijuana! We Take Your Children" on "I Take LIBERTY With My Coffee"

    in Politics

Recent headlines about state children services' departments and police agencies removing children from homes where medical marijuana is being used has created a serious concern. Authorities have ignored the recent change in laws about marijuana and continued to separate families when they find out marijuana is being used in homes where children live. The Shona Banda case in Kansas is an example.  The laws governing how states behave in this matter and, how a person who has had their children taken away can fight to get their children back, is a huge legal gray area with lots of discretion by judges, the police, and the child services' workers.  Domestic Custody Attorney Alfred Chang joins us this morning and offers expert insight in to this very important issue in our community. What to do if your children are removed from your home due to the use of marijuana both medically and recreational? What are your rights? What is the standard of evidence? How does this problem tie to any criminal process? Grab a cup of coffee and join us for an update on important current events and our education update. Long time Activist, Radio Host, Journalist and Coffee Party Director Bobby Rodrigo's show "I Take LIBERTY With My Coffee" on Coffee Party USA Radio every Sunday Morning at 8:30AM EDT. Advocating engagement, pointing out the Constitution is the Rule of Law and why it should remain so. "Disinformation: The Reason We Are Divided" on "I Take LIBERTY With My Coffee"

    in Politics

More recent polarizing issues are being reported and commented on in all forms of media. Recent legislation in Indiana and Arkansas, Jade Helm 15 and of course Money in Politics. While reading and monitoring how these issues are being reported, once again, partisan media and organizations continue to spin irresponsible narratives, with some that are literally blatantly false. Yet people will follow this disinformation down the rabbit hole and then adopt them as fact and essentially removing any chance for even a reasonable discussion on what is really going on so we as a society can actually fix it. This week I have asked a Media Panel to discuss specific issues that are not being reported honestly and how this type of irresponsible reporting continues to keep us divided as a society. We will have the latest in breaking important news subject and our weekly Education Update. So grab a cup of coffee and please join us for this important discussion with Ford Fischer from News2Share, Justin King Editor-in-Chief of THE FiFth Column and Isa Hodge Radio Show Host of Muslim & Catholic in Merica. The Education Update with Badass Teacher Marla Kilfoyle. Longtime Activist, Coffee Party Newsroom Editor & Radio Host, Bobby Rodrigo's new show on "I Take LIBERTY With My Coffee" on Coffee Party USA Radio every Sunday Morning at 8:30AM. Coffee Party Book Club "Reclaiming Civility in the Public Square"

    in Politics

"Reclaiming Civility in the Public Square – 10 Rules That Work" is a user-friendly guide to how civility in the governing process is possible.  Each rule is illustrated with a true life story.  These stories not only demonstrate how the rule works, but also give evidence that while “civility in government” may sound like an oxymoron to some, there are examples to be found showing civility to be alive and well in the political sphere.

Cassandra and Tomas are co-founders of the Institute for Civility in Government, a grassroots non-profit organization that works to bring more civility to the governing process in our communities and our nation.  With more than 15 years of experience in leading legislative conferences, Cassandra and Tomas know first-hand what it takes for citizens to be effectively engaged in the political process on Capitol Hill and beyond. They have addressed community groups, schools, churches and members of Congress, and have been interviewed on radio and television, including PBS, C-SPAN, NPR and CBC.  Both are ordained pastors in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and are actively serving a congregation. Both Cassandra and Tomas have mediation training

Detaining & Jailing: The Corporate Way on "I Take LIBERTY With My Coffee"

    in Politics

As I reported on earlier this week for The Fifth Column News twice in the past fifteen days, two separate class action lawsuits, one in U.S. District Court, one in Grady County Superior Court, were filed naming Red Hills Community Probation (RHCP) LLC, its CEO Margaret B. Crutchfield, and the cities of Cairo, Pelham and Bainbridge, GA, as defendants.  The Federal case, Edwards, et al, v Red Hills Community Probation LLC, et al, filed by the Southern Center for Human Rights, also names probation officers and members of various police departments. The state case, Green v Red Hills, et al, alleges the defendants violated a number of state statutes including various RICO laws as well. The two cases, though not connected in any way, arise out of nearly identical facts and the same pattern of conduct. Joining me this morning to discuss the merits of the case is Attorney for the Plaintiff in Green, K, Todd Butler. Attorney Butler will discuss the allegations and the law supporting his decision to advance a RICO legal argument to the court. Along with the improper and illegal actions of a corporation acting "under color of state law", for the sole purpose of profit.  I will be covering the latest important news subjects as well as our weekly education battle updates. Longtime Activist, Radio Host, Journalist and Coffee Party Director Bobby Rodrigo's show "I Take LIBERTY With My Coffee" on Coffee Party USA Radio every Sunday Morning at 8:30AM EDT. Advocating engagement, pointing out the Constitution is the Rule of Law and why it should remain so. "The Destruction of Public Education" on "I Take LIBERTY With My Coffee"

    in Politics

Our Public Education is being destroyed.  It's as simple as that. Common Core, Race to the Top, Charter School Disinformation and Money, Money, Money.  In New York, a battle rages that dates back to misappropriation of Public School Funds, Cuomo trying to cut Public Education and give money to charter schools and, of course, Common Core.  Created by businessmen and shoved down the throats of parents and teachers with a focus on testing, Common Core is the cherry on top of the continued push to turn Public Education into a business. Joining me today is Teacher/Activist Marla Kilfoyle. Marla, a manager of Badass Teacher Association has been a parent advocate on Long Island in such groups as Parents and Teachers Against Common Core and LI Opt-Out. Marla has been a teacher in the Social Studies Department at Oceanside High School (NY) for 27 years. Also joining us Kenneth Hughes, public school teacher for 28 years who is watching the school where he teaches suffer from the budget shortfalls manipulated over the past decade and is looking more budget cuts direct in the face.  These issues in New York and throughout the country are as important as any in our society. So grab a cup of coffee and join us.  Longtime Activist, Coffee Party USA Board of Director & Radio Host, Bobby Rodrigo's show "I Take LIBERTY With My Coffee" on Coffee Party USA Radio airs Sunday Morning at 8:30AM. "28 Years As A Police Officer" a conversation on "I Take LIBERTY With My Coffee"

    in Politics

The discussion about Police in our society has changed.  The Militarization of our local police departments, daily reports of police brutality, lack of transparency and police policy that undermines Constitutional Protections,  With so much negative happening and being reported the larger "positives" are forgotten.  Like our society the majority of people who join the Police do so for the right reasons. Serve and protect. A life of sacrifice and peril. A life of good works. With this in mind I introduce you to Stefan Komar of the NYPD. A person who understands history, activism and the good fight.  The son of a hero member of the Polish Underground during World War II. A man who loves his work and his community and the law. Mr. Komar will not be speaking on behalf of the NYPD in any way, but for himself. Please join us for a frank discussion about his choices, observations. good works and beliefs during his 28 year career. Have a cup of coffee with a real Police Officer.  Long time Activist, Coffee Party Newsroom Editor & Radio Host, Bobby Rodrigo's new show on "I Take LIBERTY With My Coffee" on Coffee Party USA Radio every Sunday Morning at 8:30AM.
