    Cluster Research - Deborah A. Abbott, Ph.D.

    in History

Rebroadcast   "Do Your Roots Need Untangling?  If So, Try Stepping Out on a Limb!  Cluster Genealogy May Hold the Clue"   "Our ancestors lived among many, therefore we can not research them as if they lived in isolation.  Researching our family history through extended family members, neighbors and the community may answer questions and provide information about our own ancestors not found elsewhere".    Deborah A. Abbott, Ph.D., is an adjunct faculty member at the Institute of Genealogy & Historical Research (IGHR) at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama and currently serves as the Cleveland District Trustee on the Ohio Genealogical Society (OGS) Board.  She is past-president of the African-American Genealogical Society, Cleveland, Ohio (AAGS) and a retired professor of Counseling from Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland.  She holds both the Bachelor of Science and Masters of Education degrees from Tuskegee University (Alabama) and the Ph.D. degree from Kent State University (Ohio).
In 2010 the City Council of Detroit, Michigan presented Dr. Abbott with a “Testimonial Resolution” honoring her outstanding commitment to African American genealogical research.  Dr. Abbott's five-year genealogical research project about an African American family’s migration from Kentucky to Ohio entitled "From Slavery to Freedom to Antioch" was highlighted in the Cleveland Plain Dealer (Ohio) Newspaper under the title "Six-Volumes to Amplify a Family History" in 2008.

Kevin Blake is a proud veteran, though the VA classifies him as disabled, Kevin claims to be more of a dysfunctional veteran. Kevin also considers himself to be a second amendment activist. As a gun connoisseur and seasoned gunsmith his line in the sand is drawn when it comes to the failed policy of gun control. Kevin is not a republican or a democrat, Kevin holds no party affiliation. He has been accused of being a constitutionalist from time to time and he seems to agree.
Kevin believes that the only way to restore the republic is via a local restoration in a bottom up fashion. Education is a must and Americans must learn the constitution if they wish to restore the country.

    in Training

Brought to you by The American Public Safety Training Institute (TAPSTI) www.tapsti.org, this 2 hour session will review the work of Dr. Peter Kraska and Dr. W. Lawrence Neuman and their excellent textbook entitled “Criminal Justice and Criminology Research Methods” (2012, 2nd ed.).  This seminar introduces the listener to a very deep discussion about sampling. Sampling variables discussed include: Probability Sampling, Random Sampling, Systematic Sampling, Stratified Sampling, Cluster Sampling, Sampling Size, Nonprobability Sampling, Haphazard Sampling, Purposive Sampling, Snowball Sampling, Sequential Sampling, and Theoretical Sampling. Also discussed are hidden populations and mixed sampling approaches. Then we head into Qualitative and Quantitative research and the differences between hard and soft data. Reliability, validity, bricolage, interpretation (first, second, and third-order), and document analysis follow. Other topics will be discussed as time allows.

Today you’d call Ballantyne suburban, but back then, at the start of the summer of 1966, it was country — just a cluster of houses, some of them shacks, on or near Ballantyne Road, in the Town of Chili, NY. And while June 25 started like any other day it would end in a nightmare. In The Devil at Genesee Junction, veteran crime writer, Michael Benson, returns to his formerly rural hometown to take on the double homicide of his friends Kathy Bernhard and George-Ann Formiciola that took place that night.

The two girls were missing for a month and then found in the bushes horribly mutilated. The double homicide changed the author’s childhood suddenly, and drastically. He went from living in a rural playland, to being encased in fear, wondering who among them was the werewolf who cut up Kathy and George-Ann.

This heinous crime was never resolved, and didn’t go away. In recent years, the author has teamed up with a victim’s mom, and a local private investigator to delve deep into the 6/66 murders, developing along the way some strong new leads and shocking details. Together they have heated up this icy cold case, and their investigation has led them in a startling new direction. THE DEVIL AT GENESEE JUNCTION-Michael Benson

Dream Catchers - Breaking the code of cognitive disorders - Les Paul Morgan

    in Dreams

What is a cognitive disorder after a traumatic brain injury? A cognitive disorder is when your brain does not work correctly after a traumatic brain injury (TBI). A TBI often injures the front part of your brain, which is the part of the brain used for thinking and memory. You may have difficulty doing the same things that you did before the TBI. Symptoms of a cognitive disorder? Your symptoms can get better, stay the same, or get worse over time. They may go away and come back again. You may have any of the following: Mental: Trouble paying attention, Trouble thinking clearly or doing 2 tasks at once, Memory problems, Decreased learning speed and ability Physical: Trouble sleeping or fatigue, Changes in your appetite, Poor balance, Headaches or pain, Problems with your ability to smell, taste, hear, or see Trouble staying warm or cool Emotional: Anxiety, Depression, Impatience Trouble controlling your feelings, actions, and behavior

How are cognitive disorders diagnosed? Your brain heals for many months after a TBI. Healthcare providers may need to test you regularly to monitor your brain function. You may need any of the following: An awareness test may be used to measure how well you move or speak. Tests may also be done to check your memory. A CT scan or MRI may show damage in your brain. You may be given contrast dye to help the damage show up better in the pictures. Tell the healthcare provider if you have ever had an allergic reaction to contrast dye. Do not enter the MRI room with anything metal. Metal can cause serious injury. Tell the healthcare provider if you have any metal in or on your body. How are cognitive disorders treated?

Treatment depends on the severity of your condition. You may need medicines to help decrease your symptoms, such as headaches or pain.
