Growing up into adulthood has enough challenges of its own. Add cleft and craniofacial anomalies to the picture, and it gets a little tougher, too. While many adults, from their 20s on up, have learned and comprehended their places within the Universe and grow up, there are others who -- emotionally speaking -- remain stunted in growth. On this week's "CleftCast," host Joe Rutland wraps up "The Healthy Smile" series by focusing on adults. What do adults need to move forward in their lives? Are the cleft and craniofacial anomalies still holding them back from living a present, abundant, prosperous life? Where are the trapdoors that can, either real or not, open and keep those of us from moving forward? Thoughts, feelings, emotions and structure are important factors in developing a healthy life ... and a healthy smile. Be encouraged, adults within the cleft/craniofacial community around the world. You are not alone. Enjoy this week's "CleftCast" and download it. Also, there will be a heads-up on a major topic that will be discussed at length throughout the fall.
Without a doubt, the death of Oscar-winning actor and comedian Robin Williams has touched millions of people. The topic of depression and, yes, suicide is on the public radar right now. These subjects weave a tapestry through the human experience, and it is true for the cleft/craniofacial community. In this special "CleftCast," host Joe Rutland talks about depression, anxiety, suicide and how they might affect children, teenagers, adults and parents within the cleft/craniofacial community.

One of the biggest problems and stigmas that individuals with cleft and/or craniofacial anomalies deal with is name-calling, bullying and flat-out abuse from other people. While each of these issues is worth talking about individually, collectively they can cause the receiver of these taunts to suffer mental abuse. This week's "CleftCast" begins a long series of podcasts focusing on what could be called "taboo" subjects ... the ones that no one wants to talk about openly. Host Joe Rutland offers insights and observations around mental abuse, how he has seen it affect himself and others, and what potential solutions are available. NOTE: It should be understood very clearly that Rutland is not a mental health professional, counselor or physician in the field of mental abuse. If you or anyone listening to this podcast needs help and support, then Rutland encourages you to seek help immediately in your area. #mentalhealth #cleftlip #cleftpalate #craniofacial #mentalabuse #abuse
It is important to raise awareness about college-age adults entering this new world of independence, learning and exploration, especially those in the cleft and craniofacial community. This week's "CleftCast" continues "The Healthy Smile" series, giving attention and emphasis on the college years. Host Joe Rutland shares personal stories as well as insights into different subjects that might trigger (in a healthy way) helpful ideas and ways to get through the college years with a craniofacial anomaly. One thing is for sure: these college-age years will not be dull and boring. Some will find new energy for life; others may still be haunted from their past. The hope is to build an educational and emotional foundation that not only carries forward from high school into college, yet into further adult development. Embrace the special wonder that is you ... no matter where you are in life as you download and listen to "CleftCast" any time of the day or night, anywhere around the world.
Young children in their developmental years (ages 3-8, for discussion's sake) take in a lot of information, both verbally and orally, from their parents, peers and -- in the case of the cleft/craniofacial community -- physicians, plastic surgeons, craniofacial teams and others. This week, "CleftCast" host Joe Rutland begins a four-part series called "The Healthy Smile." In this series' first podcast episode, the focus will be on early childhood and how much a cleft lip/cleft palate/craniofacial anomaly can affect children. Rutland will emphasize how important it is to tend to the emotional well-being of children while they go through their own journey of reparative work. Other episodes in "The Healthy Smile" series will focus on middle to high school-aged kids, then the college years and, finally, adulthood.
Growing up is tough enough for children. When they reach the teen years moving forward, what they have learned or picked up from their families, peers and friends begin to form their own view of life. When a craniofacial anomaly also plays a significant role, that adds more to the maturation process. This week's "CleftCast" continues "The Healthy Smile" series as host Joe Rutland speaks about growing up through these years, how developing a healthy self-esteem can definitely help and begin to set yourself up for success in life. Life is worth living and those in the cleft/craniofacial community can always use a listening ear and helping hand.
Everyone can use some inspiration in their lives. Whether it is through a book, speaker, music or simply being out in nature, it all helps bring an inspired feeling within ... and that can help a lot of people in the cleft and craniofacial community. On this week's "CleftCast," host Joe Rutland offers personal insights and tips on the light of inspiration that shines within all of us. Also, there will be a Term of the Week and some news and notes, for sure. Download "CleftCast" and share it with friends. It is the world's No. 1 #podcast for the cleft and craniofacial community. Thanks for listening! Every minute counts ... and you are loved.
There is little doubt that the power of anger and its ramifications play a powerful role within the cleft and craniofacial community. In this week's "CleftCast" #podcast, host Joe Rutland offers his thoughts on "The Art of Anger" and how it can manifest in different ways. It is natural and normal to feel angry about having craniofacial anomalies, yet is there a healthy way to deal with anger? This will be part of the discussion. Meanwhile, there also will be the usual shenanigans ... Term of the Week, a little humor with a side of seriousness, too. All that and a heapin' helpin' of love and honor make up this week's "CleftCast" #podcast. Thanks for downloading and listening. Pass the word along to your friends around the world that "CleftCast" is here. It is the world's No. 1 podcast dedicated to the cleft and craniofacial community. On this week's "CleftCast" #podcast, host Joe Rutland talks about overcoming the fear of speaking up for yourself. It's quite difficult for children and adults with cleft lip/cleft palate/craniofacial anomalies to "crack open" and speak up. Many people are afraid of how they will sound, or have been told by others not to speak up. On the other hand, others have been encouraged and strengthened to share and speak up in safe environments. I will talk about this in more detail. Also, I'm going to be offering a glimpse into a major announcement coming out soon that will be a great offer to the craniofacial community. I also will have this week's Term of the Week, too. All that and a whole lot more are in store for "CleftCast," the world's No. 1 #podcast for the cleft and craniofacial community.
