Brian Barczyk hittin' the road for AnimalBytesTV

    in Pets

The worldwide Reptile Community has its share of colorful personalities. Some are content enjoying their beautiful animals and interacting with the rest of us at Herp shows and other Herp related events; still others have a strong online presence, perhaps with a great website and solid participation on the various Herp-related forums here on the web. Some find a nice balance doing both... and then there are those who really bring their game every time they step on the field, even when that field is everywhere they go. The folks that don't just show up to play, but really try to affect positive change for the benefit of everyone that's ever uh... pardon the pun... picked up a ball. Enter Brian Barczyk of: BHB, SnakeBytesTV, and AnimalBytesTV. Brian can't seem to get enough of the creatures of this planet, and is passionate about bringing his passion to others. Join CK as he helps Mr. Barczyk spread the word about the next whirlwind adventure on his jam-packed calendar, and find out how Brian plans to take us all along for the ride.

Dr. Francesca Gino on how to make wise decisions and stick to them

    in Psychology

Amy Alkon's Advice Goddess Radio: "Nerd Your Way To A Better Life!" with the best brains in science.

*NOTE: "Best Of" replay (because I was away at a psych conference). New live show next week.

Adorably, we humans see ourselves as rational animals. Research shows us to be anything but.

We are swayed in ways we wouldn’t expect in both our decision-making and how well we stick to our plans.

The good news is, the research also shows that our going off track happens in predictable ways. My guest tonight, Harvard Business School professor, Dr. Francesca Gino, will both lay out the forces that sidetrack us as we’re trying to accomplish our goals and offer guidelines that we can use to keep ourselves on track.

Dr. Gino will be discussing her recently-published book, Sidetracked: Why Our Decisions Get Derailed, and How We Can Stick to the Plan. Join us tonight and have your eyes opened about the psychological, social, and environmental stumbling blocks that keep us from getting where we want to go.

Join me and all my fascinating guests every Sunday, 7-8 p.m. Pacific Time, 10-11 p.m. Eastern Time, at blogtalkradio.com/amyalkon or subscribe on iTunes or Stitcher.

Please buy my science-based but funny book about why people are rude and how to change things, "Good Manners for Nice People Who Sometimes Say F*ck."

And please ask a newspaper near you to carry my award-winning syndicated, science-based advice column...if they don't already.

Michael Freedman of The Florida Reptile Ranch

    in Pets

The reptile trade attracts folks of all sorts to its hallowed halls; drawing the interested and sometimes unsuspecting in with the jewel-like living curiosities that fire our senses to a point where we just can't resist keeping them as treasured possessions. Most 'herpers' start their collections with some of the more pedestrian offerings available, then gradually gravitate toward the more challenging and/or pricier fare. However, occasionally somebody seemingly out of nowhere pulls the trigger for the privelege to begin the process with some of the most coveted offerings the market has to offer. In this episode, CK interviews Michael Freedman of The Florida Reptile Ranch and asks him how he managed to build such a potent collection of Ball Python morphs in such a seemingly short period of time. If you enjoy BP morph talk, listen in and get ready for some juicy chatter.

    TIM CONNOR HITS TROUBLE~

Tim Connor Hits Trouble defies conventional genres. It is funny, occasionally violent, intelligent, controversial and full of sexual twists and turns. We meet Tim Connor just as his marriage hits the rocks and as he is about to 'escape' to a new job in the Social Science Department at Wash University. Far from finding tranquillity, Tim 'hits trouble' in Wash both personally and at work. Now 'on the loose' he has several interesting and 'unusual' encounters with women. At work, Tim finds himself drawn into a conflict between an old rebel academic, Henry Jones, and the ambitious Head of Faculty, Howard Swankie that culminates in a tense and dramatic climax. Within the novel's lively narrative, characters argue, sometimes angrily, over the direction of contemporary higher education - making this a relevant as well as a gripping and highly enjoyable novel.

Dr. Edward Slingerland: Why the key to charisma and success is not "over-trying"

    in Psychology

Amy Alkon's Advice Goddess Radio: "Nerd Your Way To A Better Life!" with the best brains in science.

*"Best Of" replay (Oscars night). On tonight’s show, science gets together with ancient Chinese philosophy and it likes what it finds.

Dr. Edward Slingerland, an internationally renowned expert in Chinese philosophy, draws on both cutting-edge science and ancient Chinese strategies to show how our modern Western approach of striving our guts out doesn’t seem to be the way to success or happiness.

In fact, to give one example from his book, it seems that getting practiced enough in something that it comes naturally is the way to avoid forcing things in the moment -- which is actually counterproductive to succeeding.

Dr. Slingerland will talk about this, how achieving that sort of effortlessness is the way to personal charisma, and much more on tonight’s show. His book he’ll be discussing is “Trying Not To Try: The Art And Science of Spontaneity.” Join us and see how we can better our work, relationships, and lives -- if we can just get out of our own way.

Join me and all my fascinating guests every Sunday, 7-8 p.m. PT, 10-11 p.m. Eastern Time, at blogtalkradio.com/amyalkon or subscribe on iTunes or Stitcher.

Please order my new book, the science-based and funny "Good Manners For Nice People Who Sometimes Say F*ck" -- only about $12 at Amazon. Orders help support my writing and the work I do to put out this show and are much appreciated!

    ADAPT:

Ours is an age of unprecedented digital focus. None are safe from the invasive criminals hard at work in twisting innovation for their own predatory nature—not even Daniel O’Neal, a rural bus driver with easy dreams of living his life for old-fashioned love and purpose.

Adapt is the engrossing debut novel from Edward Freeland which tackles the subject of the media’s overwhelming influence on the individual and on modern day society. Through his unnerving narrative, Freeland asserts the belief that one of mankind;’s primal instincts is collectivization; in this case, that of a group coming together to target one, weaker, individual and essentially evolving into a mob mentality. Adapt explores the real horror of ‘anonymous’ bullying which has become so prevalent in our digital society, especially that through social media. Freeland highlights the fragility of our personal security online, revealing just how simple it is to hack into a strangers private information through any of their personal electronic devices. Chilling and thought-provoking, Adapt will entertain and enlighten, leaving readers guessing at the truth until the very last page
