Lisa S Johnson: 108 Rock Star Guitars

    in Music

Hailed as “impressive,” “jaw-dropping,” “masterpiece” and “elegant” by media and artists alike when the original hardcover version was released in October 2013, 108 Rock Star Guitars received widespread accolades for its overall design and the artistry of the images—up-close portraits of the cherished guitars belonging to some of the world’s most iconic players.  American Photo magazine named it one of the “Best Photo Books of the Year” for 2013, while Brian Setzer called it, “The classiest guitar book I have ever seen.”  Additionally, Johnson provides personal anecdotes describing her 17-year quest to photograph these guitars and documents her travels from the backstage hallways of some of the world’s most famous venues to the artists’ private homes.

Hear the percussion and the Horns?

    in Christianity

Life can be meaningless if your life is out of rhythm, if there is no happiness to ceate a rhythm.  Everything in life can sound pretty, but if your life has lost the beat and the there is no trumpets to keep you moving ahead to the promise land you will get stuck seeing somthing that has no meaning for your life.  Happiness is like a rhythm that keeps you hearing the music moving you forward to a place designed for you.  We were meant to enjoy all we do becasue when we enjoy what we do it is enjoying what came from the hand of God.  Without the enjoyment of God there is no beat of the drums there is no sweet sound of trumets and not guitars moving in rhythm.

    Interview with Mike LeBlanc

    in Music

New Brunswick's MIKE LEBLANC brought his traditional country sound to the Cadillac Lounge this spring as part of Canadian Music Week. He played songs off his album Alive And Well.

Born in Moncton, New Brunswick, Mike moved at a young age - along with his family - to a small town called Collette, NB. Growing up, there was always music playing in the house or people jamming with their guitars and other instruments. Mike's first public appearance was at 7 years old in church. He didn't know he could sing back then but his teacher knew right away.

At 15, Mike entered a local singing contest and took everyone by surprise with his covers of songs by Randy Travis. From that point on, he was frequently asked to do amateur shows and house parties. When he reached the age of 17, he joined his first band and played all over the province and into the U.S. In 1999, he packed his instruments and his clothes and headed towards Calgary, Alberta to see what the music industry had to offer there. He was hired by a band called Uptown Riders three days upon his arrival to the big city. The band toured all over Western Canada for a few years.

In 2011, Mike's songwriting went into high gear. In this period, he wrote songs such as "When I'm Good" and "We Lived On" which were the first songs to be created for the album Alive and Well. His influences range from George Jones to Merle Haggard to Waylon Jennings to Travis Tritt. You can hear those influences in the way he sings a country song.

WIB SHOW! Eliza Neals & Regina Bonelli & Samantha Martin & Deb Ryder

    in Music

SHOW # 269 - Live, Uncut & Uncensored Conversations With "Musicians You Should Know"

    All about the women tonight!

Eliza Neals is from Detroit and her new album is Breaking and Entering, a collection of rocking blues numbers.  I'll speak with Eliza and explore her history and the road that led to this new album and music.

Regina Bonelli comes to The Couch from Kool Breeze who suggested I check out the music from this Brooklyn, NY native.  Her debut album is entitled Open Up The Door and the original songs all tell the story of this woman's journey to becoming the "reigning queen of NYC Blues" as she was dubbed by Big City Rhythm & Blues Magazine.

Samantha Martin & Delta Sugar released their full-length album, The Nightingale, back in February and it has caught the attention of many a Blues, Soul and Gospel fan since then.  Out of Canada, Martin's skill on acoustic and resonator guitars are evident throughout and the vocals of Delta Sugar add another level to the band's sound.  I'll speak with Samantha about her life and music.

Couch Kid Deb Ryder returns to talk about her new release Let It Rain.  The album is loaded with stellar musicians contributing to the sound that is unique to this fine vocalist.  All 11 songs are originals and they prove that Deb's skills as a songwriter continue to grow as she does.

powe of perception musiic with the open feel

    in Spirituality

    the short story

The Open Feel is an up and coming dreamy alternative rock band that would fit in brilliantly at a festival featuring Siouxsie and the Banshees, My Bloody Valentine, The Cure, Muse, The XX and Warpaint.  Started on the outskirts of Los Angeles by Katie Harris (vocals, guitars) and Tom Brayton (Drums, Bass), The Open Feel began as a songwriting collaboration between the long time couple and evolved into a full fledged band after months of late night studio sessions began to crystallize into a sound worthy of pursuing.

The Open Feel has been recording singles and releasing them as they are finished.  The latest single “Retrofire” was released in January 2015.  The band is now working on an EP to be released later in 2015.

“…When all your friends and their mothers start blasting the Open Feel on their favorite alternative station soon, don’t say we didn’t tell you so.” -   Seraphina Lotkhamnga, BUZZ BANDS.LA

The Week In Reviews - Ken Will Morton

    in Music

The prolific Athens, Georgia based songwriter, Ken Will Morton, will release his 7th full-length release All’s Fair In Love & War on Rara Avis Records on June 5, 2015.

All’s Fair In Love & War is the follow up to his highly acclaimed 2012 release, Slow Burn. The new recording compiles 19 new songs (plus a hidden track) written in the wake of the dissolution of a long term relationship and with Morton finding himself living alone in a mobile home. Soon after, he’d written more than enough material for a double album (hence, initial title was A Double From A Single Wide). Morton converted his home to facilitate writing and recording music at anytime day or night, with wires and cables, guitars, amps and lyric sheets everywhere. Determined to hold on to the essence of this new work, and with the help and encouragement of engineer J.P Pruett, the entire album was made in the comfort of his home. Morton played all instruments.

I will be sittind down with Ken to discuss his new CD and indeed his career
