The U.S. Supreme Court has recognized that adolescents are different than adults. It would seem to follow then that youth are treated as such under the law, including when they are involved in the juvenile and criminal justice systems. Yet, issues persist. Kids sit in our prisons facing life without parole sentences for crimes they committed before they were 18. Kids are being tried as adults. Many youth move through these systems unrepresented by legal counsel and if placed in correctional facilities are not provided with the type of treatment and programming for their rehabilitation. This show will explore how states across the country are interpreting the Supreme Court decisions and highlight trends in policy and practice when it comes to fair sentencing, Guests will also share their thoughts on what a fair and effective system looks like that best serves youth and public from national, state and personal perspectives. Guests:
Naoka Carey, Executive Director, Citizens for Juvenile Justice; Sharletta C. Evans, Founder, Red Cross Blue Shield Gang Prevention and Mother of Child Killed by Gun Violence;
Jody Kent Lavy, Director and National Coordinator, The Campaign for the Fair Sentencing of Youth; and Xavier McElrath-Bey,
Knox County, Ohio – For many writers, the search for inspiration can be a long and daunting task indeed. Returning to the Close-Up Talk Radio experience is author Paula Jo (Eberwine) Blubaugh. For Paula, inspiration for her book, Dalmatian Road, came to her during a simple conversation with her son while driving home one day.
Released in 2012 (Xlibris), Dalmatian Road offers children a simple and fun way to learn and enjoy the experience of reading. Dalmatian Road is full of life, color illustrations, and imagination. Through rhyming, Dalmatian Road provides children the opportunity to identify different animals and colors.
Recently, Paula completed her latest rhyming book tentatively titled Cloudoscope. Paula is also working on a new book from her family dog’s perspective entitled Black Labradorable. “I just want to continue to share the joys of reading through imagination. I like to think outside of the box and do things just outside of the norm. With Cloudoscope, I wanted to rhymes about how incredible the constantly changing shapes of clouds can be, much like a kaleidoscope, and what the imagination can allow them to appear to be. For Black Labradorable, I wanted to do something different by writing a humorous journal from my Labrador’s perspective. People who have pets often look at them and wish they knew what they were thinking. I’m hoping to have both books ready for release by Thanksgiving/Christmas 2013.”

My guest this Saturday November 2 is author Kristina Dreisbach. We will be discussing her new children's book, Winston the Duck and His Big Orange Bill.
About the author:
Kristina Wolf Dreisbach is a preschool teacher in Jeffersontown, Kentucky. “Children in my classes loved to hear my stories that I wrote or made up on a whim for them. My dream has been to write a children’s book and now God has made my dream come true! I hope every child who reads this book will know that God makes us all different, and to be confident in Him and who He has made us to be!” Her family once had a duck named Winston.
About the book:
Winston the duck is born on Cady Cove Lake to Mr. and Mrs. Mallard Duck. All the animals come to see the blessed event. But when Winston is born, he has a big orange bill that makes him different. Winston knows God made him different for a reason and is determined to find out why.
One night after the family goes to sleep, Winston heads out on a journey around Cady Cove Lake. He meets Mr. Turtle who laughs at him, but Winston just keeps walking. He meets Mr. Raccoon and together they search for the reason Winston has a big orange bill. The two get into trouble with an owl that wants to eat them for dinner!
