Shut off your cell phone, turn off the TV. Get away from pinging electronic devices and READ, YES, I SAID READ-READ IN SILENCE!
BREAKING NEWS from New Zealand...members of a book club arrive at a cafe, grab a drink and shut off the cell phones and read in silence. The point isn't to talk about literature but to get away from electronic overload.
SLOW READING advocates seek to return to the focused reading habits of years gone by, before Google, Smart Phones and social media fracturing our time and attention spans. SLOW READING improves the ability to concentrate, reduces stress levels and deepens the ability to think, listen and empathize.

The Mystery of the Milton Manuscript: A Novel
An Oxford student's investigation into his professor's death unveils the hidden meaning of Milton's Paradise Lost amidst a trail of
treachery and murder. Brimming with intrigue, mystery, and suspense, this book is a tale of
history, literature, forgery, and religious conspiracy that exposes the enigma
behind John Milton's epic poem. Paradise Lost is the most widely read and
celebrated poem of Western literature and the supreme epic of the English
nation and all Christendom. It was written to justify the ways of God
to man and explain the moral paradox of evil. But was it truly based on
Christian theology, as assumed, or from a different set of beliefs? Some
believe that Milton himself wrote a lost manuscript explaining the true
meaning of his poem. Was there really such a manuscript? If so, why has it
remained concealed for so many years? This novel deals with the search for
Milton's true spiritual beliefs.
This is a black arts and culture site. We will be exploring the African Diaspora via the writing, performance, both musical and theatrical (film and stage), as well as the visual arts of Africans in the Diaspora and those influenced by these aesthetic forms of expression. I am interested in the political and social ramifications of art on society, specifically movements supported by these artists and their forebearers. It is my claim that the artists are the true revolutionaries, their work honest and filled with raw unedited passion. They are our true heroes. Ashay!

On October 22, at Noon, my guest will be Dr. Jomarie Zeleznik. Dr. Zeleznik is Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. From 1995 until 2004 she trained geriatric fellows, internal medicine and family medicine residents, and medical students at Montefiore Medical Center. She is published in the geriatric and palliative care literature on subjects including pressure ulcers, communication between doctors and health care proxies and aging physiology. Dr. Zeleznik established Comprehensive Geriatric Care in 2004 as an office-based solo medical practice with home visits to for those patients who because they became homebound could no longer travel for primary medical care in the office. Informed by the experience of being one of the many hands-on caregivers for her own home-bound mother who died at home of complications of Parkinson's disease and the challenges of obtaining care in the home, Dr. Zeleznik remade Comprehensive Geriatric Care as direct primary care practice which provides accessible and individualized primary and palliative care to those elderly who cannot leave their homes. Dr. Zeleznik is a co-founder of The CareGivers’ Project, a not for profit which is an on and off-line organization where caregivers for elderly can express and reflect about the complexities of being a caregiver through written and visual material and get-togethers.

Audrey Kinsman (on your right) is the author and creator of Halloween’s newest tradition Switchcrafted: The Story of the Switch Witches of Halloween (available September, 2014). A proud mother of two young boys, Kinsman struggled with finding a solution to the piles of candy that her two sons collected while trick-or-treating in 2013. An inspiration on a cross-country flight lead to the creation of the Switchcrafted: The Story of the Switch Witches of Halloween.
The 20 page beautifully illustrated hardcover book and 8.5″ Witch doll come in a hard cover box with a Switchcrafted trick or treat bag. The product provides a story and platform for families to start a new Halloween tradition with their children by getting rid of all the sugary Halloween treats and exchanging them for something healthier.and all because the Witches need their candy for fuel (energy, heat, broom fuel). For all children ages 3 and up.
Carson Buckingham knew from childhood that she wanted to be a writer and began, at age six, by writing books of her own, hand-drawing covers, and selling them to any family member who would pay (usually a dime) for what she referred to as “classic literature.” When she ran out of relatives, she came to the conclusion that there was no real money to be made in self-publishing, so she studied writing and read voraciously for the next eighteen years, while simultaneously collecting enough rejection slips to re-paper her living room…twice.
When her landlord chucked her out for, in his words, “making the apartment into one hell of a downer,” she redoubled her efforts, and collected four times the rejection slips in half the time, single-handedly causing the first paper shortage in U.S. history.
But she persevered, improved greatly over the years, and here we are.
Carson Buckingham has been/is a professional proofreader, editor, anthologist, newspaper reporter, copywriter, technical writer, novelist, short story writer and comedy writer. She loves reading and gardening; but not at the same time. Though born and raised in Connecticut, she lives in Arizona now—and Connecticut is glad to be rid of her!
