A Texas Justice of the Peace gave parents the option of paddling their 14 year old daughter or a $500 fine and a misdemeanor record. They chose paddling. Sometime afterwards, they brought suit against the Justice, saying the paddling caused humiliation, fear and mental anguish. Are these parents justified and should corporal punishment be used to discipline children? That story is the topic of conversation in The Virtual Living Room. Listen in, this will be an interesting conversation.

Tonight's special guest is Larissa Clark from Houston, Texas, a returning NAASCA family member. Just 21 when she first joined us, Larissa was perhaps NAASCA's youngest family member and volunteer. We're delighted to give her this platform to re-introduce herself to our followers. Her abuser was her stepfather of 8 years, and started when she was 7 years old while the family was residing in Atlanta, GA. It continued after the family moved to Denver, CO. Larissa's nanny played a central role in recognizing the intervention she so desperately needed, identifying and interceding between the teenager and her perpetrator, who was caught when she was 14 years old. As Larissa explains, "My nanny helped me reach out to the law when the time was right, which allowed me to be able to put my stepfather in prison for life." She goes on to report, "I'm really blessed how the whole judicial system treated my family and me, all through the time of the arrest to the sentencing. They provided direct phone lines to get a hold of the DA or investigator." They also supplied a list of psychologist referrals to see, which jump-started her healing process. NAASCA's proud of Larissa's commitment to using her experiences to help other young people avoid, deal with, or recover from child abuse. "I am going to Denver in a couple of days to speak on behalf of Sungate kids organization," she says. "I plan to reach out to middle schools and high schools about abuse awareness in the near future." We are delighted to have Ms Clark lead our NAASCA efforts to reach out to this community, and plan to work with her to develop programs specifically designed to help both at-risk kids and young adult survivors of child abuse.

OPEN TOPIC or "open mike" night. Call in! Pick any issues, topics or subjects you'd like to discuss. Wearing a Blue Ribbon is the symbol of Child Abuse Awareness! Millions of abuse victims (men and women) hide the story of their experience well into adulthood. A huge number continue to suffer from pain, anger, fear, shame and embarrassment for decades. Most will agree their traumas have resulted in an inability to trust, make good decisions and have healthy relationships. But giving up the secret is often how recovery begins, one survivor talking to another. Join Bill Murray and his co-hosts, panelists and guests, many of them abuse survivors, others supporters and friends, for an informed discussion of the many important issues that surround child abuse. Anonymous calls and chat room participation are encouraged. ~~ Please see our web site at: www.NAASCA.org
Back in the day, over 100 years ago, the average worker had no rights whatsoever! In some cases, a 60-72 hour a week job was commonplace. There were no Child Labor Laws. A man of 40 years of age could be working next to a child of 10 years of age. Many children barely completed six years of school. We at The Coffee Club would like to know what your views are...In today's society, what does Labor Day mean to you??? Call us at 646-595-3275; the coffee is optional.

In this busy busy world where there are many distractions to our parenting, such as mobile phones, television, conversations, exercising, work, housework, beauty treatments and lets not forget our friends, it is quicker and sometimes less demanding to take the easier choice in regard to our children. This may mean giving in when a child nags for something or simply not being present to their needs and putting on the television as a baby sitter. These things may bring instant peace and quiet to the home allowing the parent to get on with their tasks, but the question we ask today is how will this shape them as members of the human family, now and in the future? How can we have a win win so that parents and children get what they need. This show will be filled with practical solutions to the problems of everyday families like eating well, potty training, death in the family and when you feel that kids just won't listen.

Samiyyah Saafir-Muhammad was born Jacqueline Glover in New York City in 1951. After spending her early years in foster care, moving four times before the age of three, she settled in with her aunt, following her father’s passing.
While still in elementary school Samiyyah took an interest in helping other students do well, joining “The Future Teachers’ Club” in the fifth grade. As a high school student, Samiyyah became aware her people’s struggle for freedom—witnessing civil rights demonstrations, protests, assassinations and riots—and decided she wanted to help somehow. It was in this atmosphere that she went off to Northeastern University in Boston where she majored in Education. Her stay there was short-lived, however, as she was introduced to the teachings of The Honorable Elijah Muhammad and thereafter joined the Nation of Islam. Within the Nation of Islam’s Muhammad University, Samiyyah underwent educational training and worked as a teacher’s assistant.
Since 2005, Samiyyah has had the privilege of serving as the Directress at Muhammad University of Islam in Atlanta, which serves students from Pre-K to the eighth grade. She has been blessed to carry on the 84-year educational tradition, which was started by the Honorable Elijah Muhammad and his brave followers in the 1930’s.
A widow after 35 years of marriage, Samiyyah presently enjoys the blessing of her and her husband’s nine children: six sons and three daughters, all of whom attended or are attending HBCUs. Samiyyah has been a mother to not only her nine children, but also to her two stepchildren, her nieces and nephews, her eight grandchildren and countless other children and adults in the community who come to her for advice, wisdom and guidance. Affectionately called MamaMiyyah, Samiyyah’s house is never empty
