On this show, we will engage Chesterton's ideas regarding history and Christianity. In other words, according to Chesterton history evinces the veracity of Christianity over science, philosophy, and other religions. Do you agree with Chesterton in that history proves that Christ and Christianity consist in the only path to God and his kingdom of heaven?
Discussion is based on Chesterton's book The Everlasting Man.
Who is this "Chesterton" guy that so many Catholics seem to quote all the time? Why should anyone care about him in this modern era? Join us as we explore this question with Sean P. Dailey and ask, "Why Chesterton?"
About the Guest: Sean P. Dailey has been the editor-in-chief of Gilbert Magazine. Prior to that he was a reporter and religion page editor for the NewsTribune in La Salle, Illinois, and a police reporter and education reporter for The State Journal-Register in Springfield, Illinois. The Reasons to Believe #113
Our Reasons to Believe Scripture verse for today is Acts 2:38-39. It reads, "Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, [even] as many as the Lord our God shall call."
Our Reasons to Believe quote for today is from Sue Bohlin. She said, "The most astounding thing God has ever done to show His existence to us is when He passed through the veil between heaven and earth and came to live among us as a man."
Our Reason to Believe powerpoint today is titled "The Problem of Evil" part 10 from "The Handbook of Christian Apologetics" by Peter Kreeft and Ronald K. Tacelli.
Peter Kreeft and Ronald K. Tacelli go on to discuss the topic of "Connecting Suffering with Sin: The Fall" (part 2)
There are two powerful arguments for the historical truth of Genesis 3. First, nearly every tribe, nation and religion throughout history have a similar story. One of the most widespread "myths" (sacred stories) in the world is the myth of a past paradise lost, a time without evil, suffering or death. The mere fact that everyone innately believes the same thing does not prove that it is true, of course; but it is at least significant evidence. And if we assume what Chesterton calls "the democracy of the dead" and extend the vote to everyone, not just to "the small and arrogant oligarchy of the living," the few lucky ones who happen to be walking about in the strangest, most secularized society in history, it puts the onus of proof on the small modern minority who scorn the universal myth.

Our Reasons to Believe passage from the Word of God today is Colossians 2:8-9. It reads, "Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily."
Our Reasons to Believe quote for today is from Josh McDowell. He said, "I always tried to be open-minded, but not so open-minded that my brains would fall out. As G. K. Chesterton says, "The purpose of opening the mind, as of opening the mouth, is to close it again on something solid." I opened my mind, and I finally closed it on the most solid reality I had ever experienced. On December 19, 1959, at 8:30PM, during my second year at the university, I became a Christian."
Our Reason to Believe powerpoint today is titled "The Problem of Evil" part 2 from "The Handbook of Christian Apologetics" by Peter Kreeft and Ronald K. Tacelli.
Dr. Peter Kreeft and Dr. Ronald K. Tacelli go on to write about "The Forms of the Problem of Evil":
Three forms of the problem of evil must be distinguished:
1. It may be claimed that any evil disproves an all-good God.
2. Or it may be claimed that the amount of evil, the superfluity and needlessness and pointlessness of much evil, disproves God.
3. Or it may be claimed that the unjust distribution of evil disproves God --- not that bad things happen, or even that so many bad things happen, but that they happen to good people just as much as to bad people.
Since the first claim is the simplest and clearest (and in that sense the strongest), we will concentrate on it. But we also here briefly indicate the lines of a solution to the second and third claims.

Encouragement & Inspiration! Let's Talk About It, Then Pray About It. There is Hope (Part 3) Hope according to the Baker Evangelical Dictionary means To trust in, wait for, look for, or desire something or someone; or to expect something beneficial in the future. Hope is indispensable for survival and this is especially true when people are confronted by misfortunes, uncertainties, and bitter disparities in life. Hope is faith holding out its hands in the dark.
Joseph Addison wrote that the blessed hope..."not only bears up the mind under sufferings but makes her rejoice in them." Isaac Watts wrote that Hope thinks nothing difficult; despair tells us that difficulty is insurmountable. G K Chesterton said Hope means expectancy when things are otherwise hopeless. Jeremy Collier said that our blessed hope is a vigorous principle; it sets the head and heart to work and animates a man to do his utmost. The Puritan Thomas Manton wrote What an excellent ground of hope and confidence we have when we reflect upon these three things in prayer the Father's love, the Son's merit and the Spirit's power! Gabriel Marcel said Hope is for the soul what breathing is for the living organism.

The History of Christianity #85
Our History of Christianity Scripture verse today is 2 Corinthians 5:17 which reads: "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new."
Our History of Christianity quote today is from G. K. Chesterton. He said: "The Christian ideal has not been tried and found wanting. It has been found difficult; and left untried."
Today, in the History of Christianity, we are looking at "The Imperial Church - From the Unconquered Sun to Jesus Christ" (Part 3) from Dr. Justo L. Gonzalez's fine book, The Story of Christianity (Volume 1).
Given these circumstances, Constantine's religious policy followed a slow but constant process. It is likely that this process responded both to the demands of political realities and to Constantine's own inner development, as he progressively left behind the ancient religion and gained a better understanding of the new. At first, he simply put an end to persecution and ordered that confiscated Christian property be returned. Shortly thereafter he gave new signs of favoring Christianity, such as donating to the church the Lateran palace in Rome, which had belonged to his wife, or putting the imperial posts at the service of bishops traveling to attend the Synod of Arles in 314 AD. At the same time, he sought to keep good relations with those who followed the ancient religions, and most especially with the Roman Senate. The official religion of the empire was paganism. As head of that empire Constantine took the title of Supreme Pontiff or High Priest, and performed the functions pertaining to that title. On coins minted as late as 320 AD one finds the names and symbols of the ancient gods, as well as the monogram for the name of Christ -- the Chi-Rho that Constantine had used for the first time at the Milvian bridge.
