    Shooting hoops and creating hope with Shaun

    Shaun is a non-profit founder and an educator with a passion for science, sports, leadership, diversity, and character education. He is the founder and president of Crossover Basketball and Scholars Academy, an international education program operating in Chennai that uses basketball as a vehicle of change to leverage the athletic values of leadership, character, teamwork, and communication to develop academic parallels and opportunities for marginalized students. The academy also facilitates cultural exchange and leadership development for American student-athletes who serve as volunteer coaches and mentors. Shaun is also an administrator, teacher, and coach working in independent schools for the past twelve years, educating through the prisms of inclusivity and diversity, chemistry, and varsity basketball. He currently teaches and coaches at The Winchendon School in Massachusetts. Most recently, Shaun toured the first scaled tuition-free school Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences in Odisha presented a TEDx talk on Hope, was an invited guest to the Philadelphia 76ers Indian-American Heritage Night, and led his team within one win of a NEPSAC Championship. He has participated at the National Association of Independent School’s annual People of Color Conference and the Association of Independent Schools of New England’s Diversity Conference. Shaun has run a state assembly campaign for Indian-American candidate John Prakash Albert, has been assistant director of Harvard University and College of the Holy Cross’ summer basketball camps, and has coached over a two-dozen players who have played college basketball. He graduated from The George Washington University with a degree in chemistry and Masters from Marymount University in Educational Leadership.

    My guest this Tuesday is Alicia Dattner.   Alicia started dreaming of being a comedian at the age of 8, and “wasted” ten years “growing up” before she finally started performing at 18. She graduated from Hampshire College with a degree in standup comedy–yes, comedy.  Mentored by several talented comedians over the years, W. Kamau Bell (HBO, FX), Eugene Mirman (Flight of the Conchords), and Bill Santiago (Huffington Post, CNN, Comedy Central), she’s been knocking audiences out (not literally) at clubs like The Improv and Gotham Comedy Club, in San Francisco, New York, Hollywood, Bombay, Chennai, and London.


    After a dozen years of doing standup comedy, she’s been racking up awards for her humorous, insightful one-woman shows.The SF Guardian called her “Goofy, messy, and fun!” The LA Theater Review says she’s “Charming, likable, and funny!” Sold-out hit shows and extended runs have garnered her a number of awards.  Her solo shows include, The Oy of Sex, Eat, Pray, Laugh!, The Punchline, and The Latest Show on Earth Circus. She’s also creator of The Spiritual Comedy Festival, and written a humorous number-one best-selling book on Amazon.

He also has ministered in a country that is near and dear to his heart, Chennai, India. In Chennai, he has ministered in pastor’s conferences, crusades, villages, widows homes, and he has assisted in the planting of a church.


     


    Pastor Williams has served on numerous boards, such as the Westridge Estates Homeowners Association, Man to Man mentoring, and the 2000 Bringing Billy Graham to Jacksonville Crusade. Pastor Williams also served as the final host of the longest-running non-news program in Jacksonville, Fl. Television history, the Sunday School  Forum.     A Little bit of East, a little bit of West, a whole lot of Reena

    Indian-American composer, Reena Esmail, is a graduate of Juilliard and has a masters from the Yale School of Music. She was a recipient of a Fulbright-Nehru grant for the 2011-2012 year and studied Hindustani vocal music in New Delhi, India. She was selected as a 2011 INK Fellow to speak about her work at the INK Conference (in association with TED) in Jaipur, with additional speaking engagements in Chennai, Delhi and Goa. Her work draws elements from both Western and Hindustani (North Indian) classical music.


    Her primary teachers have included Susan Botti, Aaron Jay Kernis, Christopher Theofanidis and Martin Bresnick, Christopher Rouse and Samuel Adler. . Her most recent Hindustani vocal studies have been with Srimati Lakshmi Shankar and Saili Kalyanpur in Los Angeles, CA.


    She has won numerous awards, including the Walter Hinrichsen Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters (with forthcoming publication of a work by C.F. Peters) and two ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Awards. She is currently a Post- Residential doctoral candidate at the Yale School of Music. Reena’s doctoral thesis, entitled Finding Common Ground: Uniting Practies in Hindustani and Western Art Musicians explores the methods and challenges of the collaborative process between Hindustani musicians and Western composers.


    For the 2010-11 season, she was the conductor and arranger for Yale’s Hindi a cappella group, Sur et Veritaal.  Her commissions include: Teen Murti, for string orchestra, Curiosity for the Pasadena Master Chorale, Tuttarana for Mount Holyoke Glee Club, and Vishwas for the Albany Symphony and bharatanatyam dancer Sisira Gorthala. Reena’s recent film work includes scores for Kali Juger Kumbh, a Bengali film by Ashish Avikunthak and Radha, by Rupeshi Shah.


    Reena currently lives in Los Angeles, California.
