Rachel Weston - Author of “New Jersey Fresh: Four Seasons From Farm to Table”

    in Radio

Since NJ is the Garden State, Jersey Fresh takes on a special meaning for those who choose to buy their fruits and veggies locally. Seasonal abundance can be found at the scores of farmer’s markets throughout the state. What’s that you say? You don’t know where to find the nearest farmer’s market and don’t even know the difference between an acorn squash and a fava bean? And how do I cook rhubarb and what do I do with all those blueberries?  Problem solved. Chef and culinary instructor Rachel Weston is on the case. Weston is an award-winning journalist with over 20 years of experience as a writer, editor and multimedia content producer. Her work has been in The Washington Post, The Huffington Post, The Gutsy Gourmet column in The Star-Ledger, NJ.com, and Chow.com among others. In 2008, Rachel followed her passion, attended culinary school, and ultimately worked the line at a fine dining restaurant, and was the founding chef at the first pay-what-you-can community cafe on the East Coast. Rachel’s book is New Jersey Fresh: Four Seasons from Farm to Table. It’s a collection of recipe ideas and tips for over 50 types of locally grown produce available at NJ farmer’s markets. She spotlights several markets and offers insights on fruits and veggies, from bok choy and fava beans to blueberries, corn, tomatoes, and peaches. Rachel takes the guesswork out of buying locally and is committed to teaching home cooks about using local and seasonal foods in their kitchens. “I wanted it to be a guide you could throw in your market bag,” she says. The book includes a listing of over 100 farmer's markets in NJ. After the interview, check After Hours at Jersey Coastal Live for more info.

Catholic Founding Fathers - The Carroll Family

        CHARLES CARROLL CARTER

George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, James Madison, Patrick Henry, Benjamin Franklin. Nearly every schoolchild recognizes them as the Founding Fathers. But there were a great many more Founding Fathers, even if their names are not so familiar as the above. Several of those lesser-known men who played key roles in the creation of the United States of America were Catholics.

George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, James Madison, Patrick Henry, Benjamin Franklin. Nearly every schoolchild recognizes them as the Founding Fathers signers of the Declaration of Independence, framers of the Constitution, heroes of the Revolutionary War.

There were a great many more Founding Fathers, however, even if their names are not so familiar as the above. Several of those lesser-known men who played key roles in the creation of the United States of America were Catholics. Chief among them were three members of the Carroll family of Maryland: Charles Carroll, the only Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence; his cousin Daniel Carroll; and Daniel Carroll's brother John Carroll, who became America's first Catholic bishop.

Charles Carroll of Carrollton (1737-1832) was the most illustrious and best-known of the Carrolls. He was the only signer whose property Carrollton was mentioned in the Declaration of Independence. Carrollton was the 10,000-acre estate in Frederick County, Maryland, that Charles Carroll's father had given him on his return to America from his education in Europe.

At the time he signed the Declaration, it was against the law for a Catholic to hold public office or to vote. Although Maryland was founded by and for Catholics in 1634, in 1649 and, later, in 1689 after the Glorious Revolution placed severe restrictions on Catholics in England, the laws were changed in Maryland.

    in Motivation

This month on Purpose Living Radio, we are ALLLL about celebrating our mothers! The twist is, we are celebrating those who are living on PURPOSE! These mothers not only take the joy of being a mother seriously, but also are ready to conquer whatever to be their own boss. They aren't playing games!

This week we have the pleasure of speaking with Donna Hicks Izzard. Donna Hicks Izzard is best known as “Chief Identity Influencer” and is the creator of the innovative The 3W Life training workshops that teach individuals the importance of reclaiming their IDENTITY to be successful in their personal and professional lives. Individuals learn WHOSE they are, WHO they are and WHY they are here. The 3W Life workshops  empower individuals who are broken, stuck, stagnant and invite them to participate in their own rescue by regaining confidence and understanding their worth.

Donna has authored two books, “Reclaiming Your Identity” and Walking in God’s Master Plan.  She is a featured contributor in the “I AM AMERICA” cookbook along with Chef Jeff and Tavis Smiley.

Many call Donna a “dynamo” because she seems to be constantly in motion and can often be found anywhere people need inspiration and motivation. She, along with former “White House Ambassador” Susan D. Johnson Cook, as her business manager, developed a strategy to touch as many lives as possible and they did this by having Donna take advantage of all of her varied activities to spread her positive message of hope and inspiration to individuals in business and women in ministry.
