We will speak with some of the protesters who have been on the frontline of the "Justice for Michael Brown" movement since day one. They will tell us why they have chosen to stay the course despite encountering militarized police presence and tactics that included being tear gassed, shot at with real and rubber bullets, having their movement restricted, constant checkpoints, facing attack dogs and being arrested. They will also explain why neither heat nor rain has hampered their need to seek justice for Michael Brown.
Oregon Update --
Oregon State lawmakers are considering the option of amending the Constitution [House bill 3133] in order to allow the reinstatement of police Sobriety checkpoints
in 1987, the Oregon Supreme Court barred police from conducting sobriety checkpoints claiming that the act was unconstitutional as you are detaining motorists without reasonable suspicion or probable cause.
I personally have mixed feelings on the subject as I have participated in assisting with accidents caused by drunk drivers and I've also had the humiliation of going through a checkpoint.- Robin
so the question is... how much are you willing to be inconvenienced or detained for the sake of Highway safety?
it should be quite an interesting debate of the pros and cons of police checkpoints.
so take a deep breath as Clif and I battle it out this Wednesday morning 10 a.m. Pacific Time and you can support me with your opinion by dialing 646-721-9887.e-mail talk@KRBNradio.com
On today's show I briefly cover some of the news coming out of the Missouri riots and give my take on it. Alternative media outlets frequently use the term "police state" without providing an actual description of what a police state is. I provide an accurate description of what a police state is, and I will let you decide whether or not the U.S. is a police state. My opinion is that it is not a police state since the people continue to enjoy more freedoms than 98% of other countries on the face of the planet. The U.S. still allows for the private ownership of weapons, even fully automatic weapons (although they are expensive and licenses are difficult to get) whereas many other westernized and eastern countries do not allow their populations to own any sort of firearms. The general population of the U.S. still has the ability to travel freely by whatever means they can, whereas in a police state (think North Korea) mobility and travel are highly restricted.
Although I do not believe that the U.S. is a police state (even though it could potentially end up that way at some point in the future), I will say that the U.S. is a surveillance state where every word typed into a web page, or every text message or phone call, e-mail is tracked, traced, recorded, stored, and warehoused by the U.S. Government. Thanks to the revelations of Edward Snowden, we know that this show you are listening to is subject to recording and monitoring via the NSA.
Another point frequently glossed over by the alternative media is the consideration of the police in the U.S. as being "militarized". Keep in mind, many media hosts have never served a day in either law enforcement, the military, or both. I'll go more into detail and ask the hard questions that the media ignores in regards to the police throughout the U.S. Just imagine yourself put in their shoes on the thin blue line.
Thanks for listening in!
Frank Overton - owner of Boulder's FasCat Coaching joins us this evening to discuss the 7/27 Rapha Gentleman's Race in Boulder CO. What is a Gentleman's Race? From Wikipedia:
A Gentlemen's Race is a type of unsanctioned, unmarshalled road ride established in the Pacific Northwest, USA in 2008. Inspired by the sort of riding of the Rapha Continental project, with a notion of classic bicycle races, a penchant for gravel and an appreciation of the small communities, people and places in outlying areas, the Gentlemen's Race was meant to push the boundaries typical of bicycle racing.
Taking cues from the famous running relay race Hood-to-Coast, where teams of 12 runners work together to race 187-miles from Mt. Hood to the Pacific Ocean, the Gentlemen's Race was first run around the northern base of Mt. Hood back to Portland with two checkpoints along the way to ensure fair play and safety.
Using a proprietary ranking and handicap system, teams of six riders depart with those estimated to be slowest first and the fastest departing last. Part team time triall, part Alleycat Races, part Cannonball Run, the teams must work and stay together the entire race. That factor above anything else is a great leveler for the race.
FasCat Coaching is a cycling coaching company helping cyclists improve their performance. Founded in 2002 by Frank Overton, FasCat is based on ten successful years of racing and training, sport science and frequent communication between the coach and the athlete. FasCat has a new Performance Cycling Center located in North Boulder at 4550 North Broadway Street.
