a Story by: Meg Rosoff
About a decade ago, a friend I knew and cared about deeply told me that she was having an affair with her child's best friend's father. "My God," I said, swallowing hard. "That's complicated."
It was complicated all right. The families lived practically next door and were in and out of each other's houses all the time. But neither marriage was good. And my friend swore that this was the real thing.
The problem was her daughter. She worshipped her mum, watched her like a hawk. And though she was only six, she was one of those strange, precocious children who gets inside adult heads and roams around, looking for stuff. Like the fact that her mother was madly in love with someone other than her dad.
"You can't keep lying to her," I said.
"No, no," she assured me. "It's not a problem. She doesn't suspect a thing."
I looked at her. "She knows. She doesn't know what she knows, but she knows."
And she did. If ever a child knew something was wrong with her family, it was Evie. She had developed a heartbreaking look of puzzlement in the company of her mother, searching her face for answers.
I notice those children now, the ones people lie to. Like all children, they are studying the world, struggling to learn the rules of engagement. Except that, for them, life doesn't make sense because their instincts are negated. So they begin to twist in an attempt to accommodate a world full of half-truths.
An American woman visiting friends in London a few days after the school massacre in December 2012 in Newtown, Connecticut, asked the friend's family (two adults, three teenagers) not to refer to Newtown for the duration of their visit and not to turn on the news in case her children might overhear distressing stories.
Mitt Romney started his speech Wednesday night at Mississippi State sounding more like a commencement speaker than a political candidate.Romney's opening was a soft mixture of self-deprecation about his college days – "I was an English major, which meant I had no idea what I would do for a living" – and a recounting of some of the human lessons he learned during the 2012 presidential election. "Mitt ran and failed. He failed. So you can't have Romney," he said, as the audience cheered robustly.Donald Trump Des Moines Register
Willard met in Boston last week and went as far as to discuss where campaign headquarters might be located. Romney also is trying to sell an 11,000-square-foot home he is building in La Jolla, Calif. The house, and its car elevator, was used in 2012 to portray him as rich and out of touch. Before his appearance on campus, Romney stopped by Little Dooey, a barbecue restaurant that had a sign outside welcoming him. Wearing Hudson jeans and an open-collared shirt, he stepped out of a black SUV and quickly declared, “I like pulled pork.”. Boston Globe

Dr. Ardy Sixkiller Clarke, author of Encounters With Star People, vowed as a teenager to follow in the footsteps of two 19th-century explorers, John L. Stephens and Frederick Catherwood, who brought the ancient Maya cities to the world's attention. Dr. Clarke set out on a seven-year adventure (from 2003 through 2010) through Belize, Honduras, Guatemala, and Mexico, collecting stories of encounters, sky gods, giants, little people, and aliens among the indigenous people. She drove more than 12,000 miles, visiting 89 archaeological sites (Stephens and Catherwood visited only 44) and conducting nearly 100 individual interviews. The result is an enthralling series of unique, original, true stories of encounters with space travelers, giants, little people, and UFOs. Sky People may very well change the way you perceive and experience the world.
Dr. Ardy Sixkiller Clarke, a Professor Emeritus at Montana State University, has dedicated her life and career to working with indigenous populations. She has been adopted by enrolled tribal members and given traditional names by three Northern Plains spiritual leaders including the Blackfeet (Woman with Great Knowledge), the Northern Cheyenne (Walks all Woman) and the Lakota Sioux (Woman who Helps People).
The author of several children's books and the best-selling, Sisters in the Blood, she lives in Montana with her husband. She continues to work as a consultant to American Indian tribes and indigenous communities worldwide.
Dr. Clarke was a guest on Rainbow Vision July 11, 2012. Listen here.
