From the mouth of a PET...
Hi there, three years ago, I became someone's pet, and it was the best thing that ever happened to me!
I love having human beings in my life. I'm cared for beyond my wildest dreams...food...shelter and lots of love and affection. I know having an owner is great but I wondered, "is owning a pet as great for people." I asked around and found owing a pet can be a great thing!
Pets are good company. A cat or dog have been know to fill an empty nest when kids go off to college. No matter the weather, my owner has to get out of the house to walk me, great exercise.
Did you know pets are good for your health...pets can lower blood pressure. Pets are perennial playmates. Permanent play dates for only children and for teens who are stingy with hugs for their parents, a pet is the perfect object of affection for cuddling.
Money will buy a fine dog, but only LOVE will make him wag his tail!
Pets and responsibility...etc.
Pets are entertaining...etc.
Pets are a great way to meet...etc.
Rescue a dog-cat from a shelter...etc.
Best reason of all...LOVE UNCONDITIONALLY...etc.
We have a guest this week – Raimundo Ortiz of Sports World News & his blog Sports-Deli.com. Mike and Joyce speak with Laura Castillo, Executive Director of FivePMinus.org, helping families affected by Cri du Chat (Cat Cry) Syndrome (CdCs).
Babies born with CdCs are characterized at birth by a high-pitched cry, low birth weight, poor muscle tone, microcephaly, and potential medical complications. "5p-" is a term used by geneticists to describe a portion of the short arm of chromosome number five that is missing in these individuals. Some of the facial characteristics include:
Round "moon shaped" face
Small upturned nose at birth
Small or low set chin (micrognathis)
Low positioned ears
Downward slanting of the eyes
Wide spaced eyes
Extra skin fold at the inner corner of one or both eyes (epicanthal fold)
These facial features usually elongate as the child enters adulthood. Children with CdCs are often also diagnosed with autism since many of the developmental issues are similar.
There is a great deal of good information on this syndrome on their website. See especially http://www.fivepminus.org/Development
Laura shares with us the origins of the 5p- Society, the national family support group for individuals with Cri du Chat Syndrome. They group shares expeerience and provides support to individuals and families affected by CdCs, sharing strategies for managing the syndrome and supporting their children in achieving his or her maximum potential Children with Cri du Chat Syndrome can lead full and meaningful lives with love and support.

Every pet shelter has that volunteer – the one who gives tireless care to cats as they await their forever homes. These people work to make the cats’ temporary homes safer, less stressful places. Actress Kate Walsh has two rescued cats and like so many other cat owners has enjoyed the companionship and comfort a cat provides.
Now, popular actress Kat Walsh is partnering with the Purina® Cat Chow® program to thank cat shelter volunteers – real people who help cats in need.
The brand will donate nearly $100,000 to the 50 participating shelters – one in every state – to acknowledge the work of the shelter volunteers that help to lessen the stress for cats living in shelters while they await their forever home. The top shelter volunteer, chosen by consumer votes and a judging panel, will receive a $25,000 makeover for the shelter he or she represents to help create a gentler, less chaotic environment for the cats.
Kate Walsh shares Shelter Volunteer of the Year program that encourages cat people to support their local shelters that help animals across the country.
