  • Historical Fiction Author Patricia Kullberg Joins Kori on the Back Porch

    in Writing

A family physician, Patricia Kullberg, MD, MPH, devoted her career to serving persons living with physical, mental and addiction disorders at a clinic for the homeless. She has written many award-winning articles about health and medicine, but Girl in the River is her first novel. Kullberg and her husband live in Portland, Oregon, where she facilitates writing workshops for marginalized women and tends a large garden.

    Book blurb:

On the eve of World War II, Portland, Oregon, battles corruption as the city falls into the hands of gangsters. Newly orphaned, Mae Rose wanders the rain-stained streets alone, on the lam from a knife-wielding pimp and mustering her own worst impulses to survive. As Mae rises to power in Portland’s gritty sex industry, she’s pursued by a district attorney who seeks to snare her for more personal reasons.  In the city’s smoky nightspots, the glamorous Dr. Ruth Barnett turns heads, but by day she operates a wildly successful abortion service. At war’s end, both Mae and Ruth are caught in the crosshairs of Portland’s anti-vice crusade. The women’s survival, as well as any chance at lasting love, depends on their allegiance to each other and their abilities to outsmart the cops and politicians who no longer protect them.

Author Heather Voight Joins Kori on the Back Porch

    in History

“[Passionate Crusaders] shows that the efforts of an honorable and courageous few can create small steps to change history. This detailed, well-told, and inspiring story will be of value to students of the Holocaust, American history, and human rights.” –From the Foreword by Dr. Leon Stein, Professor Emeritus of History and Education Director Emeritus, Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center.

Passionate Crusaders tells the gripping story of a few righteous Americans who sought to do what many thought impossible in 1944—save Jews who had not yet been murdered in the Holocaust.

By January 1944, Treasury Department officials Henry Morgenthau, John Pehle, and Josiah DuBois had already convinced President Franklin Roosevelt to create the War Refugee Board, an agency with the authority to provide rescue and relief for Jews and other groups persecuted by the Nazis.

Author Lorraine Pestell Joins Kori on the Back Porch

    in Writing

Lorraine Pestell was born in London and has lived and worked as an IT professional all over the world, including the UK, several European capitals, the USA and Singapore, before moving to Melbourne, Australia, for the turn of the millennium.  Having suffered from chronic clinical depression since childhood, and later diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder after a violent marriage and other challenging events, she turned to creative writing as therapy and to escape from the world.

A passionate advocate for mental health awareness and rational suicide, Lorraine has two main goals for her writing:  first, to inspire fellow sufferers to rise above their symptoms and make a success of their lives; and second, to encourage non-sufferers to tolerate, support and even love those afflicted with mental illness in their quest to live a "normal" life.

The six-part contemporary fiction serial, "A Life Singular", is truly Lorraine's life's work, starting out as an adolescent romance in her early teens.  It has since become six long books exploring the human mind and social justice, wrapped in the universal theme of love and our endless fascination for celebrity.  Parts One to Four are available now, with Part Five due for release in March 2016.

Mystery Author, Max E. Stone Joins Kori on the Back Porch

    in Writing

Max doesn't remember ever not creating a story, pen or no pen. A writer and lover of books since the age of nine, Max first set pen to page as a hobby, constructing stories that were anything but fit for children. Entertaining classmates while simultaneously concerning surrounding adults with blood-ridden tales of gory mysteries and heavy suspense that "just came to mind", Max, with the help of family and the encouraging words of an inspiring fifth grade teacher, continued to develop this gift.

Little was it known at the time, but said gift would become a lifeline.

From horrific trauma  in Max's teen years, writing played an instrumental part in the difficult recovery and the  Warrens, Bennetts, and Johnsons, three interconnected families all with issues, mysteries, and secrets that threaten their livelihood and lives, were born.

Though relatively new to the publishing game, Max reads everything and everyone and relishes the journey, learning something new each day.
