What Color Is Monday?
How Autism Changed One Family For The Better
In this moving memoir, What Color Is Monday?: How Autism Changed One Family For The Better (Feb, 2015), Carrie Cariello invites us to take a peek into exactly what it takes to get through each day juggling the needs of her whole family. Through hilarious mishaps, honest insights, and heartfelt letters addressed to her children, she shows us the beauty and wonder of raising a child who views the world through a different lens, and how ultimately autism changed her family for the better.
As a busy mom of five kids, four sons and one daughter, she chronicles family adventures and experiences; most of which we can all readily relate to. Her words so aptly describe the chaos of life within a big family, along with the quiet moments that seem so ordinary but are often extraordinary. She’s honest and funny, sometimes emotional, but always noticing the little things that often get overlooked in the course of a whirlwind of a day; and by the way, one of her sons, Jack, has autism.
Autism may be part of their daily lives, but it doesn’t define life within the Cariello family. The book’s title references a conversation Cariello had with her son Jack, who asked one day what color she saw for Monday. Until then, she had no idea that he saw all days as colors, and in retelling the story she said, “On a seemingly ordinary day, Jack once again granted me the privilege to take a tiny peek inside his fascinating mind.”

Carrie is a mother of five, and her second son, diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, is the inspiration for the book. It is a memoir that tells their story as a family and their journey to discovering their son Jack’s condition and the impact that autism had in their day-to-day lives. When Carrie started writing the book, there was no clear direction as to the goal of her book. She just thought it would be good to put out her journal and start capturing small moments that she knew would get lost in the shuffle of everyday, and memorialize them. But towards the end, she came to realize that there really was a message to her story.
