In addition, she mentors and supervises upcoming therapists.

Michelle will be talking about addiction as an attachment disorder (intimacy disorder) and the way in which addicts often attach to the substance or process they are using compulsively as a substitute for meaningful and consistent attachment in their relationships and the way that this is set up in childhood, and how recovery must address attachment and learning how to ‘do relationships’ if it is going to be successful long-term for the person.

Intensives Can Provide Intense Recovery with Carol the Coach

    in Self Help

Intensives can be an integrel part of good recovery. They typically cost less and provide a great basis for change and recovery. Carol the Coach will be interviewing Dr. Michael Howard and Ms. Stefanie Petyak who are staff of the Healing Solutions Counseling Center. They will be talking about Healing Solutions which recently began offering intensives for sex addicts, partners, and couples in recovery from sexual addiction. The flagship program is Bridge to Recovery, a 5-day intensive for men struggling with compulsive sexuality and addiction. Fist developed in 2014, this program is experiential in nature and relies heavily on group processing. It is structured around the 30-task model for treating sex addiction developed by Dr. Patrick Carnes.

During the five days, participants learn about their specific addiction cycle, associated triggers and relapse prevention strategies, as well their arousal template and delve deep into the underpinnings of their addiction and what life experiences got them to this place. Participants also do family of origin and trauma work, with each participant presenting their “trauma egg” to the rest of the group. Since sex addiction is considered an intimacy disorder, much of an addict’s growth in recovery comes from the group experience and learning how to build healthy support systems. Borderline Personality Disorder and Sexual Addiction with Carol the Coach

    in Self Help

Sex addicts and partners of sex addicts can have mental illnesses that complicate diagnosis and recovery.  One of these mental illnesses is borderline personality disorder, or BPD.  BPD is commonly associated with sex addiction and makes sex addiction much more difficult to diagnose and treat because the criteria for both diagnoses overlap.  BPD is considered a severe personality disorder often caused by cumulative trauma experienced in early and middle childhood.  Carol the Coach will interview Geoff Goodman who not only is a CSAT but a proffessor of psychology. He will be explaining some of the symptoms of BPD which include frantic attempts to avoid abandonment, chronic feelings of emptiness, and impulsivity, which can include self-injurious behaviors and sexual promiscuity.  It is important that mental health professionals screen for BPD when they assess sex addicts and partners of sex addicts.  BPD is extremely challenging to treat in psychotherapy because patients diagnosed with BPD often attempt to push away their therapists with hostile behaviors.  Fortunately, there are several evidence-based treatment models for BPD that, when combined with a 12-step program for sex addiction or codependency, can help the patient to find a successful path of recovery.

Stein, Co-founder of Willow Tree Counseling in Santa Rosa, CA. talks about how how trauma is often times recorded in the nervous system and why sex addicts would reenact that trauma over and over again until it is processed. He believes that intensive trauma workshops are often the most effective form of treatment in helping the addict to reprocess the trauma and work through the shame that feeds sexual addiction.
