Military history is not just about those men and women who serve on the front lines, or lead forces in great battles at the top of the command chain. In between are quiet professionals, whose actions and contributions make possible the achievements and victories of others. All too often, their names remain unknown, remembered only by families and friends, along with the occasional odd historian, that they even served in the military. One such man was Vice Adm. Allan Rockwell McCann, USN. Over a naval career that spanned decades, along with World War II, Adm. McCann was among a handful of officers in the submarine service who committed his career and energy to the safety of his fellow submariners. The rescue chamber that he designed, and which bears his name today, was responsible for the first successful rescue of submariners trapped aboard a sunken sub. Later, during World War II, McCann would provide leadership and support for submarines based in Australia and the Central Pacific, in their deadly fight against Imperial Japan. In addition, McCann was a pioneer and innovator in the operation of submarines under the polar ice packs. Through it all, Adm. McCann remained a paragon of achievement and quiet professionalism, qualities which are still admired today.
To learn more about Vice Adm. McCann and his career, join military historian, author and journalist John D. Gresham (@greshamj01) for Military Monday (#MilitaryMonday on @Writestream) at 1 p.m. Eastern. His guest this week will be U.S. Naval Institute Press (@USNIBooks) Carl Lavo (@underCs). Mr. Lavo is the author of PUSHING THE LIMITS, his biography of Vice Adm. McCann. Together they will discuss the amazing and significant career of this man, and his many achievements which still influence us today. Listeners are in courage to to call in to ask questions and offer opinions, about this quiet, professional gentlemen.

The Half Has Never Been Told: Slavery and the Making of American Capitalism
Historian Edward E. Baptist reveals in The Half Has Never Been Told, the expansion of slavery in the first eight decades after American independence drove the evolution and modernization of the United States. In the span of a single lifetime, the South grew from a narrow coastal strip of worn-out tobacco plantations to a continental cotton empire, and the United States grew into a modern, industrial, and capitalist economy. Until the Civil War, Baptist explains, the most important American economic innovations were ways to make slavery ever more profitable. Through forced migration and torture, slave owners extracted continual increases in efficiency from enslaved African Americans. Thus the United States seized control of the world market for cotton, the key raw material of the Industrial Revolution, and became a wealthy nation with global influence.
Told through intimate slave narratives, plantation records, newspapers, and the words of politicians, entrepreneurs, and escaped slaves, The Half Has Never Been Told offers a radical new interpretation of American history. It forces readers to reckon with the violence at the root of American supremacy, but also with the survival and resistance that brought about slavery’s end—and created a culture that sustains America’s deepest dreams of freedom.
Edward E. Baptist is an Associate Professor in the Department of History and House Professor and Dean at the Carl Becker House at Cornell University.

Today we have an opportunity to speak to playwright, Julie Hébert, and cast members: Susi Damilano and Carl Lumbly. TREE, directed by Jon Tracy, has its Regional Premiere at the San Francisco Playhouse, January 20th to March 7th, opens January 24, 2015.
Winner of the Pen Award for Drama and Backstage Garland Award, Tree is the story of three generations divided by race, culture, and time. The play has contemporary resonance, posing questions about family and what it means to “be related.” “I set out to write a play about race and ended up writing a play about family,” said playwright Julie Hébert about Tree. “About the inescapability of family, of being known over time, of recognizing yourself in others, of continuing relationships after betrayal and suffering. We keep each other honest. Sometimes it’s funny, sometimes painful – and so it is with this play.”
The story explored in Tree unfolds when a southern white woman shows up at the home of an African-American man in Chicago and claims to be his half-sister, impelling them to confront a shared past. In their search for the truth, they must navigate the fragmented memories of the man’s aged mother to discover where their roots intersect.
