Episode 301: Confessions of a Major Program Manager, w/ CAPT Mark Vandroff, USN

    in Military

One man's chore is another man's hobby. Another man's dread, is the other's fantasy. Such, in a fashion, is Program Management in the Navy.

To be a good one, step one is to be self-aware. From his latest article in USNI's Proceedings, Confessions of a Major Program Manager, Captain Mark Vandroff, USN just lays it out; "Face it: Everyone hates MPMs. For the budget-conscious officials in the Pentagon, our products are never cheap enough. For technologists both inside and outside the Department of Defense who want military progress to be state of the art, our products are never fielded fast enough. For the fleet users and their advocates, products could always be more capable, usable, or maintainable. Industry gets upset when we treat the taxpayers’ money like it is worth saving rather than help Wall Street with its next earnings report. Our uniformed brothers and sisters, support scientists, contractors, and comptrollers all loathe us—and if you aren’t in one of those groups, you probably quit reading already."

Coming back to Midrats, we will have the author on for the full hour to discuss the dark art of the program manager, what it takes to be one, and why at the end of the day someone would - really - come to love it all.

Captain Vandroff is a 1989 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. With 10 years as a surface warfare officer and 16 years as an engineering duty officer, he is currently the major program manager for Arleigh Burke class destoyers.

    in Football

So....  It starts.  The rebuilding process has been started, finally from the right place.  I have shared before, a chef can have all the ingredients for a perfect gourmet meal but, if he can’t cook, it’s a waste!  That about summed up the Miami Dolphins through last Sunday's debacle in London.  The best DT in football, top tier DE's and pro-bowl DB's and a center that has been to Hawaii a few times as well....  borderline greatness ready to bloom at QB and receivers....  but no "chef" to mix the ingredients correctly to serve that perfect meal.

So...  OUT WITH THE OLD & IN WITH THE NEW...  Let’s see if this new chef (coach) has a better palate for flavor and can "mix it up" better than the last.  Although the resume' has 6 years of coaching and 11 years as a player, there is little to no experience running a team.  Not only will he need to earn respect from the players, he has an entire coaching staff full of pride, wisdom, experience and age to either help Mr. Campbell or bring him down.  Does he make changes to surround himself with folks that to enable his will be done? Does he teach the teachers? Is he merely a motivator until another replaces him - as soon as that becomes available?

Let’s talk about these things and more on Thursday’s show!  You're invited to call and listen in, or speak your mind (516) 453-9433 at 6:30 EST...  Last week former center for the Miami Dolphins John Bock gave us a call and shared his wonderful insight on things as only an insider can...  Who knows who will call in this week..  Seeya then!!

What Is The Purpose Of Going To Church?

    in Christianity

Many of us faithfully go to church every week. If you don't go, you might know a bunch of people who do. What do you really get out of it, and what should you get out of it?

We know the complaints: everything a person does is a ministry; services are way too long; it's too expensive to go; it takes all day; the praise and worship is longer than the sermon; etc.

Are we following the Biblical model of church? Listen today as we examine what the Bible really says about church. We will compare and contrast the Bible's model to what's going on in today's church.

Montrose, CO Talks Broadband Financing Options

    in Internet

It's full steam ahead as dozens of Colorado communities prepare to pass referenda to take back their rights to build public broadband networks. Top of the planning list is determining how to finance these infrastructure projects.

Virgil Turner, Director of Innovation and Citizen Engagement for the City of Montrose, joins us to discuss "Show Me the (Hidden) Money for Community Broadband." This new report from host Craig Settles instructs communities how to use different and effective ways to raise money that are triggered by the needs assessment process, a process that every community should be doing.

Listeners will get great advice about:

    sound financial planning
    developing partnerships with state agencies
the role of local businesses in broadband fundraising efforts
enlisting co-ops to enable region wide broadband funding
local bipartisanship's impact on raising funds

While it is great to have a single source of funding, communities need financing options because broadband projects are complex and can be expensive. Now is the time for creative communities that believe in thinking outside of the box.

This newest Community Broadban Snapshot Report is sponsored by Corning and SiFi Network. Some of the tips and advice presented in this broadcast are you just in more detail in Settles' new book, Building the Gigabit City, Vol 2.

  • Pure Water Is Essential

    in Self Help

Raw tap water is a chemical cocktail that should not be consumed without purification. Chlorine and fluoride are added by cities to the agricultural, industrial and chemtrail pollutants already contaminating water.

Water is an amazing substance. Adequate water intake is essential, but it needs purification of contaminants before consumption. Water resources are becoming more controlled, and water rights are a serious issue.

Agricultural, industrial, radioactive, “fracking” and biological pollution all contaminate water, as well as geo-engineering chemical sprays. Chlorine, ammonia, fluoride and other chemicals are added by cities. Fluoride is a poison that should not be in our water supply.

It is important to purify water with special filtration or reverse osmosis to remove the fluoride. Then re-mineralize the water if needed to make it more alkaline. Redox media combined with carbon and “corrected" reverse osmosis is the best method of purifying for home use.

Redox and carbon with a special fluoride removing media is also very good, often more practical, and less expensive. When combined with Ultrafiltration, it is even better.
