We think of grieving as an experience that happens after a death.
During caregiving, though, grieving accompanies us throughout our experience. We grieve when we hear a diagnosis, we grieve when we see our caree decline, we grieve as we let go of what was.
Claire Day, SVP, Alzheimer's Association, Delware Valley Chapter, offers a perspective on how to help us heal as we grieve through caregiving.

Bastdazdog asks: I was hoping you could speak more on Rodney and his emotional state so far in TTB. I am wondering if it’s a case of John who, at the beginning of the story had already progressed through the five stages of grief and so while he still needed to heal, it was just the final bit of healing that could only happen by falling in love again, whereas Rodney is still distancing himself from what happened to him leaving him stuck in the first phase/stage – denial, and it’s Rodney’s great coping skills (fuelled by having to continue to interact daily with his abuser and her continued abuse) that allow him to hide in plain sight, and so his journey is still really just beginning when TTB opens and he meets John. If so, how far along is Rodney in healing at the end of chapter 14 – The Broken Road
Actually -- the comment was huge. Read the whole thing here.
Dysfunctional families are steeped in shame, and cannot look at their issues. They have poor insight into their own behaviors and problems, and will do anything to appear normal or exceptional, despite the fact that in reality, they are terribly crippled by their fears, addictions, mental disorders, abuse, neglect and insecurities.(http://lightshouse.org/lights-blog/outcast-scapegoat-or-black-sheep-of-the-dysfunctiona-family#ixzz3yeroO5Ub) Rules and roles in dysfunctional families keep people operating with masks and pretense. Over time this lack of authenticity results in deeply entrenched false beliefs in family members; even after a child is grown these thought patterns might be very difficult to break.(http://www.smokyraincounseling.com/articles/dysfunctional-family-rules-and-roles/)
