The 2014 Motorcycle Cannonball is in the record books! Buzz Kanter of American Iron Magazine will join us to with the the story of their adventures. The team definitely had their challenges in this years event. It is a story of perserverence and fortitude to say the least. Buzz will inform us of the successes and struggles. In true writers fashion we get a very descriptive and thorough review.
Norm Nelson, rider for Cannonball Team 23 had a brilliant ride and finished the epic 4000 mile journey from Daytona Beach to Tacoma, Washington with a perfect score. They will be credited with second place out of a field of 100 riders but that definitely does not tell the entire story. Norm will give us his perspective on the thrill of near victory and the agony of defeat. The 1926 BMW needed every bit of its 12 horsepower considering the big headwinds out West and the climb over the Rocky Mountains. Fate definitely played a role in the outcome for Team 23. Hear all about it as Norm shares his feelings and philosophies on this years event!
We are delighted to bring you this in depth look at the outcomes and results for these two teams who joined us on the eve of the ride to discuss their hopes and plans for victory. We are going inside the numbers to get the human side with both of these guests now that the run is completed!
Charles Walker - Jazz Saxophonist 2:15pm
Charles quickly became one of Birmingham’s most sought after saxophonist. His musical influence and style are attributed to the likes of Grover Washington Jr., Cannonball Adderly, Kirk Whalum and Gerald Albright; However, his music carries a distinction that is like no other.
Jerry Adams - R&B Artist (a mix of country & soul) 3:15pm
Jerry Adams: “Brown-eyed Country Soul” A mix of soul, country, and R&B, Jerry
Adam’s music is singular among today’s vast music scene. Adams’ smooth personality is
exemplified by his continually evolving sound with influences he attributes to The
Temptations, Marvin Gay, and Otis Redding. He refers to his timbre as “brown-eyed
It’s too darn hot in Los Angeles and your friends in podcasting are high as proverbial kites on codeine swirl frappuccinos!
Dean performed in a “Live Event of the Week” and this fact leads to a discussion of public transportation, the immune system and Biddy Mason.
Phil spent all week (and the week before that) trying to get their new film submitted to Sundance, and in the process watch documentaries about The Magnificent Seven, Sam Peckinpah and Stanley Kubrick’s Paths of Glory. He also saw the last film to star the great James Gandolfini (and boasting merely the latest indelible performance from the masterful Tom Hardy).
Two “Lawsuits of the Week” are discussed, which leads to analysis of sexual abuse in Hollywood, domestic violence in professional football and the role of interns in show business.
A great comic and a legendary big-screen villain are remembered.
All that, plus much more … Pass the Chillpak. It’s too darn hot!
In this episode of Talking Motorcycles with Barry Boone we go inside SOZO Motorsports. Mark Adams, co-founder and CEO of SOZO Global Inc, joins us to discuss this 100% natural and nutricious beverage and the business opportunity it presents. This product has truly enhanced my motorcycle touring experience by focusing the mind and the body. For most motorcyclists, myself included, there are times in a riding day that your energy and focus slips. I consider this a very dangerous time in a touring day. SOZO Ignite takes care of that problem. Mark will be on to tell us the how and the why of this amazing product. We will also delve into the idea that you can earn tremendous income by being a SOZO distributor and enhance your financial life. Mark will tell us how it all works.
Chris Banker, Manager of Communications for New Jersey Motorsports Park, will join us to discuss the season ending AMA Pro Road Race at NJMP. Last week on Talking Motorcycles we discussed the 2014 Motorcycle Cannonball just one day prior to it kicking off at the Daytona Beach Resort. 97 riders on their pre1937 vintage machines began their 4,000 mile journeys to Tacoma, Washington last Friday morning. Buzz Kanter of American Iron Magazine will be calling in to provide an update on their efforts in this years event. Our guests on that show were Buzz Kanter, Norm Nelson and Patrick Simmons of The Doobie Brothers. Buzz will update us!
In this episode of Talking Motorcycles we go LIVE with some of the top competitors of this years event which departs from Daytona Beach this Friday night and arrives in Tacoma, Washngton September 21st. This epic ride is done on motorcycles built prior to 1937. Riders will be required to navigate well, ride and truly have an understanding of their classic machines.
Patrick Simmons, lead singer and guitar for the Doobie Brothers!
Norm Nelson is one of the best. He once rode his 1958 Harley-Davidson Sportster from Jacksonville, Florida to Alaska. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of that ride he did it again riding from St. Augustine, Florida to Alaska at 70 years old. He has won the vintage race at Datyona International Speedway 6 times on a Norton Manx. When the Historic Motorcycle Society chose Norm to ride in the event last year he nearly won it. In 2014, Norm and Team 23 are set to do it again hoping for a win. Norm will join us on this episode to discuss the ride just two days before they depart!
Buzz Kanter, Publisher/Editor in Chief of American Iron Magazine will be competing in the Motorcycle Cannoball for the third time. This will be my third ride across the US on a motorcycle much older than I am. Rode a 1915 Harley twin on the first Motorcycle Cannonball in 2010, a 1929 Harley JDH on the second one in 2012, and will be riding a 1936 VLH this time. Interesting mixture of excitement, anxiety and anticipation right now.
Buzz Kanter and Norm Nelson typify the spirit of the Motorcycle Cannonball. Both are excellent motorcyclists who will tell their stories as to why they ride in this grueling yet rewarding event that covers 4000 miles of American roads from coast to coast.

Frank Overton - owner of Boulder's FasCat Coaching joins us this evening to discuss the 7/27 Rapha Gentleman's Race in Boulder CO. What is a Gentleman's Race? From Wikipedia:
A Gentlemen's Race is a type of unsanctioned, unmarshalled road ride established in the Pacific Northwest, USA in 2008. Inspired by the sort of riding of the Rapha Continental project, with a notion of classic bicycle races, a penchant for gravel and an appreciation of the small communities, people and places in outlying areas, the Gentlemen's Race was meant to push the boundaries typical of bicycle racing.
Taking cues from the famous running relay race Hood-to-Coast, where teams of 12 runners work together to race 187-miles from Mt. Hood to the Pacific Ocean, the Gentlemen's Race was first run around the northern base of Mt. Hood back to Portland with two checkpoints along the way to ensure fair play and safety.
Using a proprietary ranking and handicap system, teams of six riders depart with those estimated to be slowest first and the fastest departing last. Part team time triall, part Alleycat Races, part Cannonball Run, the teams must work and stay together the entire race. That factor above anything else is a great leveler for the race.
FasCat Coaching is a cycling coaching company helping cyclists improve their performance. Founded in 2002 by Frank Overton, FasCat is based on ten successful years of racing and training, sport science and frequent communication between the coach and the athlete. FasCat has a new Performance Cycling Center located in North Boulder at 4550 North Broadway Street.

AMERICAN NINJA WARRIOR
May 26 (9-11 pm ET)
‘AMERICAN NINJA WARRIOR’ RETURNS FEATURING THE QUALIFYING ROUND FROM VENICE BEACH, CA – The heart-racing obstacle course competition series “American Ninja Warrior” returns to NBC this summer with all new episodes. The action-packed series follows competitors as they tackle the world’s most difficult obstacle courses in qualifying and finals rounds across the country. Those that successfully complete the course in each city will move onto the national finals round in Las Vegas where they face a stunning four-stage course modeled after the famed Mt. Midoriyama - based on the Japanese television series “Sasuke.” In the first round of qualifying from Venice Beach, California, competitors must tackle ten obstacles in the qualifying round including three brand new obstacles; the Slack Ladder, the Jumping Bars Into Cargo and the Cannonball Alley. Olympian rower Susan Francia and luger Kate Hanson tackle the course along with Ninja veteran David Campbell. Competitors vie for a chance to win a cash prize of $500,000 and the title “American Ninja Warrior.” Matt Iseman and Akbar Gbaja Biamila return as hosts as Jenn Brown also returns as co-host.
On May 3, 1914, Erwin (Cannonball) Baker of Indianapolis, Indiana rode a 1914 Indian 7 horsepower motorcycle from San Diego, California to New York City. He did that ride in only 11 1/2 days breaking the previous record and earning the name Cannon Ball from a New York journalist who was obviously impressed with the record ride. The name was to remain a part of Erwin Baker for the rest of his life through today.
The Cannon Ball Project retraced the route taken by Baker in 1914. Don Emde utilized the actual written notes of Baker’s to recreate, as close as possible the original adventure. The Daytona 200 winner, who by the way is part of the only Father/Son team to ever win the historic 200, invited close friends to join him on the great adventure.
Tonight on Talking Motorcycles, Emde and Tom Seymour of Saddlemen Seats, Saddlebags and Luggage will reveal inside information about the ride, what inspired them and how it felt to complete the retracing of one of the most famous cross America rides in the history of our country.

This episode is dedicated to the ecclectic universe of popular culture. Some of it will be about some of the greatest jazz ever. The rest will be about whatever you and Jeff and I come up with. We'll go down that road together this Wednesday night at 6:00 pm Mountain Standard. You are quite welcome to take over the show as long as it would pass Johnny Carson's censors. BTW, Chaplain Batman will be digging into his Jazz Collection for some of the best tracks ever.
