The ability to manage your emotions and remain calm under pressure has a direct link to your performance. .Research from the University of California, Berkeley, reveals an upside to experiencing moderate levels of stress. But it also reinforces how important it is to keep stress under control. The study, led by post-doctoral fellow Elizabeth Kirby, found that the onset of stress entices the brain into growing new cells responsible for improved memory. However, this effect is only seen when stress is intermittent. As soon as the stress continues beyond a few moments into a prolonged state, it suppresses the brain’s ability to develop new cells.
Besides increasing your risk of heart disease, depression, and obesity, stress decreases your cognitive performance. Fortunately, though, unless a lion is chasing you, the bulk of your stress is subjective and under your control. Top performers have well-honed coping strategies that they employ under stressful circumstances. This lowers their stress levels regardless of what’s happening in their environment, ensuring that the stress they experience is intermittent and not prolonged.

Jesus Himself was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke Him and said to Him, "Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?" And He got up and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, "Hush, be still." And the wind died down and it became perfectly calm. And He said to them, "Why are you afraid? The disciples went and woke him, saying, "Master, Master, we're going to drown!" He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm. Luke 8:24

Starting in John 6:16 we see that Jesus is able to calm a storm that had suddenly erupted on the sea. The desciples were in the boat when the storm arose. The clouds were threatening, the waves were crashing into the boat, the sky was darkened, and the desciples were filled with fear! Jesus was not in the boat at that time. When Jesus got into the boat though.....the storm ended and they arrived where the Lord intended them to be......even though they were not where ohers had expected them to be. Most of Jesus' desciples were fishermen and they should have been used to storms on the sea.........but this storm really tossed them with fear untill they invited JESUS into their boat. I'm inspired to talk about this topic today because for the last few months I have been living in a way that has set me up to be very anxious and depressed right now!
But I know exactly what I was doing (and not doing) that has led me to feel this way.
It's a little more complicated for me because I've moved across the country and still feel like a foreigner in this new city.
But, no matter why you are feeling anxious or depressed, there are lifestyle tweaks you can make that help with every case of depression and anxiety.
So many of us are experiencing anxiety - anxiety over our careers, finances, relationships, health, life direction, etc.
Am I making the right choice?
Am I forgetting something?
I don't like my job.
I don't have enough money.
Should I be more like them?
Why aren't I as happy as I thought I would be?
What's wrong with me?
What should I do with my life?
Being in a state of depression, anxiety and fight-or-flight is not a great place to be on a regular basis, for your health or your happiness.
We want to spend more time with the parasympathetic nervous system, or the "feed and breed" mode.
