In the Streets with Beverley Smith: Keep Ya Head Up (Episode 14)

    in Spirituality

When times are hard, how do we make it through? Marginalized and oppressed people have always turned to our hymns, great speeches and spirited work songs to get us through the bad times. In this episode, we are inspired by the speeches of James Baldwin, Sojourner Truth, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (no, not the I Have a Dream speech). We gather strength and determination from the work songs of the Black convicts in the prison chain gangs of the American South. We find empathy and understanding in the writings of Nikki Giovanni, Etheridge Knight, and Dudley Randall. We thrill to the rewritten lyrics of Sojourner Truth's Battle Hymn, a battle song used by the all-Negro Union regiments during the Civil War. Our hymns draw on faith and the promise of a brighter day. We hope to understand it better by and by. Music by Ray Charles, Mahalia Jackson, the Davis Sisters, Sweet Honey in the Rock, In Process, and the prison chain gangs of Texas, South Carolina, and Mississippi.

A Just Cause Coast2Coast - Why Prisons in the United States Need Reform

    in US Government

Sam Thurman, Cliff Stewart and Lisa Stewart of the Colorado exoneration firm A Just Cause, discuss what happens when the wheels of justice trample unbridled over the rights of innocent Americans.

Although the American system of justice is the most-respected worldwide, it is still a system designed, and operated, by humans, which means it's not perfect. Sam, Cliff, and Lisa will highlight ongoing struggles against "the system" to free wrongfully imprisoned people, and what happens when justice miscarries against an actually innocent person.

Our Special Guests for tonight's show are Alex Friedmann, Prison Legal News and Eli Lehrer, R Street Institute. Both will be sharing their thoughts and opinions on why prison reform is so needed in our United States' prisons.

A Just Cause is currently campaigning for "FreeTheIRP6," who's been wrongly imprisoned in Florence, CO for a crime they didn't commit. Read full story: www.freetheirp6.org.

Human Trafficking - A Survivors Story - Wendy Barnes

    in Motivation

This is just some of what Wendy shares - "The sexual abuse I endured by my step-father as a child, shaped my beliefs to make me a perfect target for Greg when I was 15 yrs old. He drew me into his web by giving me a false taste of what it felt like to have worth, hope and to be loved. It felt nice to be special to someone - anyone. When the abuse started by Greg, I accepted it, still I knew in my heart that I was not worthy of any love or kindness. It wasn't long before he demanded that I prove my love for him. I listened to his instructions and in terror I followed his directions. With the intent to prove my love for him and with hope that I could earn his love in return, I turned my first trick. When I was finished, I violently threw up what felt like my soul. I no longer felt human, I now was a prostitute. I wanted to die. I wasn't the first girl he did this to and I wasn't the last. The prostitution ring that he built and ran sometimes contained as many as 15 girls at one time. The physical, emotional and psychological abuse we endured was horrific."

Due to knowing Greg had been trafficking underage girls and not being able to do anything about it Wendy was sentenced to 2 years in prison and lost custody of her 3 children. She is grateful for that time in prison because she could then start the healing process and be free from the torture she had endored!!!

Wendy has been free from that life for 16 yrs and free from prison for 12 years now. She holds a full time job and has a close relationship with all three of her children. She has learned that healing is a journey, in fact it may be a life long journey. She has learned that happiness is a choice that she gets to choose every day.

  • CO-HOST MARK CASTRILLON & SPECIAL GUEST ROCK STAR PHOTOGRAPHER MICHAEL STRIDER

    in Entertainment

SPECIAL GUEST IS ROCK STAR PHOTOGRAPHER MICHAEL STRIDER: Odds are, you’ve seen some of Michael Strider’s photos. Rather than channeling his passion for rock music into a guitar, Strider chose the camera, and for the past twenty years he has been shooting the likes of KISS, Bruce Springsteen, and Rihanna. Strider has found a way to capture the lifeblood of a rock star in the climax of his/her performance. Now he incorporates the same style in his ever-expanding portfolio of actors, musicians, and dignitaries, and as an employee of Getty Images. “Rock ‘n Roll is an essence that can be incorporated into any shoot, whether it is a rock star, supermodel or an actor,” Strider says. His singular aesthetic, and discerning method of photography has guaranteed him a lasting authority in the industry. - See more at: striderimage.com

SPECIAL COHOST WILL BE SINGER/SONGWRITER/PRODUCER MARK CASTRILLON  You can pretty much catch me playing somewhere around Southern California on any given night of the week. I have been requested and had the pleasure of performing for such such artists as; JOHNNY DEPP, JON BON JOVI, PAT MONAHAN (Train), KEITH URBAN, NICOLE KIDMAN, KENNY CHESNEY, WHITNEY HOUSTON, MICK FLEETWOOD (Fleetwood Mac), TOM CRUISE, KATIE HOLMES, KATHERINE HEIGL, PAULA ABDUL.

LOTL Presents Khari. CD' 'Through Thick & Thin & new book 'Curvy & Confident

    in Music

It's been said that the most brilliant writers have experienced the most tragedy, and from the pain of their past experiences they are transformed into poets who paint pictures with words. Khari is a living testimony to this truth! Born and raised in Oakland, California, he first began writing poetry as a young child while living in foster homes. Poetry was his therapy, an outlet that allowed him to purge his mind of the pain he endured as a youth.

His transition from literary poet to spoken word artist occurred during the summer of 2006, when he began performing at open mics and winning several poetry slams hosted by Hot Water Cornbread. His keen intellect, passionate flow and delivery, powerful voice and brazen lyrics quickly distinguished him from many other performance poets and spoken word artists. He exploded onto the Spoken word poetry scene during the summer of 2006 after performing at Mouth Off (a spoken word poetry venue held at Oakland's Air Lounge every Wednesday). He also began participating in the local poetry slam scene in 2006. Now, three years later, he's published a best selling poetry book, releasing over 20,000 spoken word mixtapes and performed at some of the top spoken word venues in the country, including Spoken Soul Sessions in New Orleans during the Essence Music Festival, Nuyorican Poets Café in New York, Soul Cypher in Oakland and Cafe Nuba in Denver. Within a three year period, he's performed at over 100 different venues and is currently in high demand to perform and feature at major spoken word events.

In 2014, Khari released his sophomore spoken word album, "Through Thick and Thin." He also released a book, "Curvy and Confident," a self-empowerment guide for women. Curvy and Confident is the first book ever written by a man to help women overcome low self-confidence, negative body image, and insecurities

Gospel of Matthew 5: 1 Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2 and he began to teach them.3  “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
