Harvard-trained, Dr. Cynthia Thaik is a heart doctor who practices with her heart. She delivers security and peace of mind to her clients by orchestrating behavioral and mindset shifts to evoke lasting transformational changes in their health, well-being, vitality, energy, and creativity. Intuitively, she has known that she would serve this calling since the age of five, after accompanying her physician mother to the medical clinic in their home country of Mayamar. There, she witnessed the pure hands-on art of healing,
It wasn’t until the opening of her wellness center three years ago - where she guided her patients to experience tremendous improvement in their health and well-being through integrative lifestyle practices that focused on nutrition, fitness, and spiritual or meditative practices - that those early childhood memories of the art of self-directed healing were reawakened. A practicing Buddhist, Dr. Cynthia is now on a mission to deliver that message about healing through her new book, "Your Vibrant Heart: Restoring Health, Strength & Spirit from the Body’s Core." She manages two successful cardiology clinics and is the founder of Revitalize-U, a wellness center focused on health, nutrition, weight loss, and detoxification. Visit http://drcynthia.com

A prolific Nigerian playwright, novelist and screenwriter now based in London, HALF OF A YELLOW SUN is Biyi Bandele’s feature film directorial debut. This first feature follows his distinguished career writing and directing plays for the Royal Shakespeare Company, Royal Court, and writing screenplays for the BBC and British and international film productions.
Bandele has previously written and directed a short, THE KISS (2009), a psychological thriller.
For television, Bandele wrote Not Even God is Wise Enough directed by Danny Boyle for BBC2 in 1994. His prolific writing for theatre includes his adaptation of Aphra Benn’s Oroonoko, which was a huge hit for the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000, and was successfully revived by New York’s Theatre for a New Audience in 2007. Bandele’s fiction writing includes Burma Boy published by Jonathan Cape in 2007 (published as The King’s Rifle, Harper Collins in the US in 2009).
Film Synopsis: Olanna (Thandie Newton) and Kainene (Anika Noni Rose) are glamorous twins from a wealthy Nigerian family. Upon returning to a privileged city life in newly independent 1960s Nigeria after their expensive English education, the two women make very different choices. Olanna shocks her family by going to live with her lover, the “revolutionary professor” Odenigbo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) in the dusty university town of Nsukka; Kainene turns out to be a fiercely successful businesswoman when she takes over the family interests, and surprises even herself when she falls in love with Richard (Joseph Mawle), an English writer. They become caught up in the events of the Nigerian civil war, in which the lgbo people fought an impassioned struggle to establish Biafra as an independent republic.
Events are taking place across the nation in recognition of Armed Forces Week. Currently, less than one percent of our population wears the uniform as compared to more than 12 percent during World War II. Those numbers are set to shrink even more in response to the President declaring an end to the 12-year-plus "global war on terror." Thousands of members will exit with discharge lessons in mind of the risks ahead. Perhaps, even greater challenges lie ahead for those on the other side of trauma.
Lydia Davey, a former U.S. Marine, is one of tens of thousands who experienced military sexual trauma and post-traumatic stress while serving, and beyond. As a columnist for Military 1 and The Huffington Post she's defined the lessons learned since discharge, and their application to heal, forgive, and forge ahead.
She reported that "more veterans than ever before are reporting post-traumatic stress. This is a good thing. Combat is stressful. Rape is stressful. The loss of your buddies is stressful ... we can't muscle through trauma alone." Lydia describes the endeavor of healing and forgiveness as an even greater risk than "donning body armor and loading weapons" during Afghanistan deployment.
"Challenging your heart to heal as an incredibly powerful thing," she says. Whether you're a veteran who's experienced military trauma, helping a veteran on the other side of it, or simply looking for entrepreneur insights, this episode is one you won't want to miss. Tune in to meet Lydia Davey, successful vetrepreneur, motivational speaker, Founder and CEO of Moriah Creatives Public Relations, project manager, author of The Adventures of Puppi and Burma (a story of a homeless veteran and his two pets), and an "Outward Bound" veteran dogsledding participant.
Join World Footprints as hosts Tonya and Ian explore the world of silence, the power of perfume and a new Burma.
Imagine living for 17 years under a personal vow of silence. Our first guest, National Geographic author John Francis, did just that. After witnessing the devastating effects of the 1971 oil spill in San Francisco Bay, John embarked on a period of reflection that involved a 17 year long self-imposed silence and 22 years of walking. John’s incredible journey is chronicled in his book The Ragged Edge of Silence: Finding Peace in a Noisy World.
Then, you will hear the extraordinary story of a self-made man from Norway, Geir Ness, and how he is leaving positive footprints through his multi-million dollar Laila Perfume Company. During our interview with Geir we spoke about his dear friend, 9-time New York City Marathon Champion Grete Weitz, with whom he joined forces to raise money for cancer research. We learned that Geir substituted for Grete in the 2009 NYC Marathon and raised nearly $300,000 for the Norway Cancer Society. Sadly, Grete lost her courageous battle with cancer the day immediately following our interview with Geir. We dedicate this show in Grete’s memory and to everyone whose lives have been affected by cancer.
Finally, World Footprints welcomes back travel writer Cynthia Dial. Cynthia has recently returned from Burma (Myanmar) and she joins us to share some of her surprising experiences.

He and his wife launched a fundraising campaign to help rebuilt the Village. They received many donations to help these families. Watching the film and seeing the extent of the suffering, one can only begin to grasp the level of greed and corruption employed by the military regime’s control. “It's a real shame. Burma has the largest reserves of gas in Southeast Asia—she's rich in rubies and jadeite, but Burma is the poorest country outside of Africa. Senior General Than Shwe and his cohorts are plundering Burma's wealth for themselves.” The film coherently explains the historical background of how Burma was a peaceful democracy after gaining independence from Britain following World War II. However, in 1962, a military general staged a coup and established the ruling junta, effectively ending freedom and legitimate democracy in the country. “Every time Burma's people and clergy march in the street seeking democracy, freedom, and human rights, they get gunned down. The junta doesn't care if they shoot thousands and thousands of people dead. They've done it before; they'll do it again. The people know it. They’re living in fear. They're terrified.”

Harvard-trained, Dr. Cynthia Thaik is a heart doctor that practices with her heart. She delivers security and peace of mind to her clients by orchestrating behavioral and mindset shifts to evoke lasting transformational changes in their health, well-being, vitality, energy, and creativity.
Intuitively, she has known that she would serve this calling since the age of five, after accompanying her physician mother to the medical clinic in their home country of Myanmar, formerly known as Burma. There, she witnessed the pure hands-on art of healing, free from modern-day drugs, bureaucracy, and malpractice threats. Decades later, the demands of solo practice, a strained marriage and three small children created a toll that left her feeling disconnected and drained. It wasn’t until the opening of her wellness center three years ago that those early childhood memories of the art of self-directed healing were reawakened.
Dr. Cynthia began her professional training at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. She then completed her internal medicine and cardiology training through Harvard’s training programs. She manages two successful cardiology clinics and is the founder of Revitalize-U.
Wednesday, Feb 5, 6pm EST: Mitchell's guest this evening is well-known musician Don Slepian, Electronic Keyboardist, combines unique skills in music and electronics with a lifetime of improvised keyboard music performance. Working in Renaissance, Baroque, and Romantic genres, he performs original classically-styled music on computer instruments of his own design.
Born into a scientific family, Slepian showed both musical and technical talent early in life. In 1968, he programmed computers and built electronic music circuitry, sculpting sound with classic electronic music studio tape techniques. In 1972, he was a tester on the early internet as a member of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).
Don has been presented by WNYC’s “New Sounds” show in New York’s Lincoln Center, by the French Ministry of Culture at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, by the Karen Baptist Church for performances in the refugee camps at the border of Burma and Thailand, and has toured in Hong Kong and Singapore, among other venues, around the world.
He currently webcasts from his studio in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. He is President of Local 577, American Federation of Musicians and Music Minister at All Souls Christian Center of East Stroudsburg, PA.
Mitchell and Don first met and got friendly in the mid-1980's when they were both part of a spiritual community (Synchronicity Foundation) using music and language to create coherence between the two hemispheres of the brain, clear the subconscious mind of old, bad habits and open the way for novel thought and development.
