    Election Day 2015

    in Politics

    Locked in the fight of his political life, veteran City Councilor Charles Yancey said yesterday he believes aggressive door-knocking will be enough to record a “resounding” victory in tomorrow’s election over surging rival Andrea Joy Campbell, who trounced the 31-year councilor in the September primary.Boston Herald

    Ohio voters could make history when they head to the polls Tuesday. Depending on the outcome of the election, Ohio could become the first state to legalize marijuana for both medical and recreational use in a single vote. The decision comes down to votes on two issues, though. Issue 3 on the ballot led to the creation of Issue 2, which could keep Issue 3 from actually happening. It’s easy to see how this can get confusing, but here’s how it all WANE

    Tacoma,Washington is stepping into the spotlight as voters on Election Day decide on two minimum-wage measures, including one that would immediately bump pay in the city to at least $15 an hour — one of the highest minimum wages in the country.Seattle Times

    Lyric's Lounge

    in Radio

    I'm back at it... You know I can't be gone for too long... So this episode of Lyric's Lounge, we will talk about loyalty, what is the word,and what is the word to you and how you operate with people with or without it. We will also go over the difference between loyalty and faithfulness. It has been argued that they mean the same thing, but I'm sure you'll hear why it's not.

    African Culture & Diaspora; Churches of Free Negroes, Pt 6; The Reaction, Pt 3

    in History

    Our Scripture verse for today is Matthew 5:14-16 which reads: "Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven."

    Our History of Black Americans and the Black Church quote for today is from Lee June, a professor at Michigan State University and the author of the book, "Yet With A Steady Beat: The Black Church through a Psychological and Biblical Lens." He said, "Both the pastor and the church community have been major contributors to promoting the spiritual as well as the psychological well-being of individuals. While the landscape has changed dramatically over the years, both the church setting and the pastor remain vital to the overall well-being of individuals involved in the church community. It is my belief that the historical 'Black Church' had more of a way-of-life effect on its parishioners than many contemporary congregations do. Further, as individuals began to compartmentalize their lives, some of the natural psychological benefits arising from church involvement started to dissipate. As the deep psychological impact of the 'Black Church' began to be removed from it, its all-embracing benefits also started to wane."

    In this podcast, we are using as our texts: From Slavery to Freedom, by John Hope Franklin, The Negro Church in America by E. Franklin Frazier, and The Black Church In The U.S. by William A. Banks.

    in Current Events

    The sweeping racial changes transforming the United States come with an important demographic dimension: age. The waves of Hispanics and Asians and multiracial Americans reshaping the country’s population are full of young people, who by some measures already outnumber their white counterparts. The trend was punctuated by the arrival in 2011 of the ?rst “majority-minority” birth cohort, the ?rst in which the majority of U.S. babies were nonwhite minorities. Consequently, the racial makeup of the nation’s younger population is beginning to contrast sharply with that of baby boomers and seniors.For most of U.S. history, the white population has been viewed as “mainstream” society, with sociologists viewing the assimilation of immigrants and ethnic minorities as dependent on their adoption of its way of life.1 Not coincidentally, whites were the numerically dominant racial group in the United States during that same time. (Between 1790 and 1980, whites ranged from 80 to 90 percent of the population.) But whites’ tenure as America’s mainstream population is on the wane, in a demographic sense.. White children will become a minority of children under age 18 well before 2020, and, soon thereafter, the white population as a whole is projected to begin to decrease.. The 2010 census indicated that the

    Behind the Headlines: Iranian nuclear power – What’s the big deal?

    in Current Events

    For some 10-15 years, the 'Iranian nuclear issue' has been a recurring 'crisis' in world politics. Media focus on this topic appears to wax and wane as US-Israeli bellicosity rises and falls – one day, war is a sure thing; the next, Iran is 'our partner'. Recently, a 'framework agreement' was agreed between Iran and the permanent UN Security Council member-states: Iran will ‘reduce its uranium enrichment capacity’ in exchange for ‘phased sanctions relief’.

    As the world goes from crisis to crisis, we wonder; what makes Iran's pursuit of nuclear technology such a critical issue? This week on Behind the Headlines we're hoping to get to the heart of the matter, taking into account Saudi Arabia's invasion of Yemen, a parallel theater of 'conflict management', and Greece's 'pivot' towards Russia.

    We're live this Sunday, 12 April 2015, from 2-3:30pm EST / 11am-12.30pm PST / 7-8.30pm UTC / 8-9.30pm CET.

    The Behind the Headlines talkshow takes place each Sunday on the SOTT Radio Network, the radio network of SOTT.net, your media source for independent news and commentary on world events. Analyzing global impact events that shape our world and future, and connecting the dots to reveal the bigger picture obscured by mainstream programming, Behind the Headlines is current affairs for people who think.

    in Christianity

    Through successive ages of darkness, in the midnight of heathenism, God permitted men to try the experiment of finding out God by their own wisdom, not to demonstrate their inability to his satisfaction, but that men themselves might see that they could not obtain a knowledge of God and of Jesus Christ his Son, save through the revelation of his word by the Holy Spirit. When Christ came to the world, the experiment had been fully tried, and the result made it evident that the world by wisdom knew not God. Even in the church God has allowed men to test their own wisdom in this matter, but when a crisis has been brought about through human fallibility, God has risen mightily to defend his people. When the church has been brought low, when trial and oppression have come upon his people, he more abundantly exalted them by signal deliverance. When unfaithful teachers came among the people, weakness followed, and the faith of God’s people seemed to wane; but God arose and purged his floor, and the tried and true were lifted up. – {CE 94.2}
    There are times when apostasy comes into the ranks, when piety is left out of the heart by those who should have kept step with their divine Leader. The people of God separate from the source of their strength, and pride, vanity, extravagance, and display follow. There are idols within and idols without; but God sends the Comforter as a reprover of sin, that his people may be warned of their apostasy and rebuked for their backsliding. When the more precious manifestations of his love shall be gratefully acknowledged and appreciated, the Lord will pour in the balm of comfort and the oil of joy. – {CE 95.1}
    When men are led to realize that their human calculations come far short, and are convinced that their wisdom is but foolishness, then it is that they turn to the Lord to seek him with all the heart, that they may find him. – {CE 95.2}
