Pushing Kids Towards Success vs. Pushing Them Out of School

    in Legal

The “school-to-prison pipeline” refers to the policies and practices that push children, especially our most at-risk children, out of classrooms and into the juvenile and criminal justice systems. This practice has been fueled by zero tolerance policies, the presence of police officers in schools, and under-resourced academic settings. These excessive practices have resulted in the suspensions, expulsions, and arrests of of millions of public school students, especially students with histories of abuse and neglect, those who are poor, students of color, those with disabilities or who identify as LGBT. The interruption of education is detrimental for long-term success. It is costing the success of future generations and our communities.  On this episode of Spotlight on Youth, guests will discuss this alarming national trend, why it is harmful, and what jurisdictions are doing to address it.

    Guests:
Rebecca Ballard DiLoreto, Kentucky Litigation & Policy Director, Children’s Law Center, Inc.
Dennis Parker, Director, Racial Justice Program, American Civil Liberties Union
Brea L. Perry, Associate Professor, Department of Sociology, Indiana University

    In The Country July Special

    in Country Music

Carleton Place, Ontario Country artist BREA LAWRENSON'S collection of songs reflects her own personal experiences and aspirations. Her musical career has taken her across Canada, and to London, UK. She frequently travels to Nashville to write and record. Brea has released several popular singles to country radio: Honey, With You Whiskey and Bottom Of The Bottle. Her new single Hell On High Heels is being released on July 8th.

Spend one night out on the town with singer/songwriter/guitarist DAN ARNOLD (from Saskatchewan, now living in Alberta) and you'll find that there isn't a word of a lie in any of his lyrics. Everything is written by Dan himself and it shows. Weaving catchy hooks with southern-rock style guitars, while keeping true to a certain twang, Dan takes real life experiences and gives listeners a glimpse into a life filled with irony. In September 2013, Dan entered MCC Recording in Calgary, Alberta, with songs filled with memories of actual events of the past nine years, The result was his album The Hard Way featuring the first single God Bless Country Girls and the new title-track single.

Ontario's KAITLIN KOZELL has made a name for herself performing at various songwriters’ circles and showcases, festivals, galas and anti-bullying campaigns. Since being added to the roster of Leafs anthem singers in the late fall of 2011 and performing at her first game in January of 2012, Kaitlin has had the opportunity to perform at numerous Toronto Maple Leafs, Toronto Marlies, and other MLSE events and functions. She dreams of performing on the Grand Ole Opry someday. Kaitlin's current radio single is called Up From Here.
