Brain Injury Connection on Recovery Now With Kim Justus

    in Health

After a TBI, where Deb Palmer lost consciousness over asphalt, resulting in a subdural hematoma and subarachnoid hemorrhage, she was diagnosed with a seizure disorder and major depression.  She knew she fell and hit her head, that something was wrong, but didn’t know what. She kept thinking it would go away with more sleep.  Nobody referred her to any resources for help or support.  Doctors obviously weren’t trained on how to address the long-term sequelae of brain injury or how to help someone who has had one.  Deb didn’t want what happened to her to happen to others.

Deb decided to turn anger into something constructive; and, with the help of other survivors and some professionals, published  five free newsletters to educate about brain injury.  The demand for the publication was greater than expected so she decided to form a nonprofit organization. Thus, the Brain Injury Connection (BIC) was born. www.braininjuryconnection.org

This show is a gathering place for anyone seeking recovery from the challenges of life on life's terms. I introduce topics, and survivor's share their experience, strength and hope. We discuss useful tools that have helped us lighten the load, of our journey through recovery.

More will be revealed! Tune in, stop in and call in. This is a "we" recovery program, because it is in the "we," that we find the new "me."

We focus on the four A's of Recovery: Awareness, Acceptance, Action and Adaptation. This is a place for survivor's striving to become thrivers.

Front half of show is a featured guest. to join us in the discussion. The second part of the show is Open Mic and some great Indy Music, sure to inspire!

Host is Kim Justus, author of In a Flash: Miracles Here and Beyond found at www.inaflash.org & "Like" at www.facebook.com/inaflash.org

  • Episode 2: Second Sight, extra sensory perception and temporal lobe brain injury

    in Education

Welcome to another episode of Brain Injury Round Table. I am your host, Constance Miller, brain injury survivor of more than 30 years and Managing Director of Brain Injury Resource Center, located on the Internet at http://www.headinjury.com. At the suggestion of Mr. Tai Campbell, of Taken Back Our Communities Now, http://www.tbocn.org, tonight’s show will look into the development of heightened feeling states following brain injury. Some such heightened feelings take the form of disturbances in the autonomic nervous system. The resulting condition is known as “hyper-arousal” and describes the effect of injury on things such as heart rate and respiration. Another aspect of heightened feeling states is sometimes seen as psychic or extra sensory abilities and in many instances is seen as a gift. Others in this category might feel undone by the sudden onset of such strange reveries and might find themselves pre-occupied by feelings of uncertainty and anxiety.

It is seldom addressed by members of the profession called upon to make us whole, to take us from the point of being "patients" to being people again. Therefore, tonight  we’re going to take matters into our own hands. We’ll kick it around, swap stories and delve into another of those taboo topics associated with brain injury.

Join us for another exciting and informative episode of Disability Roundtable. thanks to all our listeners for bringing our voices, to your home, your mobile device wherever you are all around the world. Additionally, I’d like to give a big thank you to this show’s sponsors: Martha Marcum, mother of a brain injury survivor and author of MARTHA'S FABLES and Gordon Johnson, attorney of TBI Law.com. Additionally, we look forward to bringing another sponsor Mia Marcum McCoy, brain injury survivor and author of a brain injury book that she will speak with us about on a future episode.

The Half Has Never Been Told: Slavery and the Making of American Capitalism

Historian Edward E. Baptist reveals in The Half Has Never Been Told, the expansion of slavery in the first eight decades after American independence drove the evolution and modernization of the United States. In the span of a single lifetime, the South grew from a narrow coastal strip of worn-out tobacco plantations to a continental cotton empire, and the United States grew into a modern, industrial, and capitalist economy. Until the Civil War, Baptist explains, the most important American economic innovations were ways to make slavery ever more profitable. Through forced migration and torture, slave owners extracted continual increases in efficiency from enslaved African Americans. Thus the United States seized control of the world market for cotton, the key raw material of the Industrial Revolution, and became a wealthy nation with global influence.

Told through intimate slave narratives, plantation records, newspapers, and the words of politicians, entrepreneurs, and escaped slaves, The Half Has Never Been Told offers a radical new interpretation of American history. It forces readers to reckon with the violence at the root of American supremacy, but also with the survival and resistance that brought about slavery’s end—and created a culture that sustains America’s deepest dreams of freedom.

Edward E. Baptist is an Associate Professor in the Department of History and House Professor and Dean at the Carl Becker House at Cornell University.

    My Brain Changed. Now What?

    in Self Help

When you have a brain injury sometimes our ways of communication can be taken the wrong way. Let's talk about some ways to get your point across.I remember not having much of a filter after my brain aneurysm. So feelings would get hurt or if someone said something to me, my feelings would get hurt. Now, I am getting better at communicating without being rude or insulting. Emotions can run high when you feel that you have lost control. There are moments when everything drives you mad from, people talking, crowds, family, friends, etc. After a brain injury things become confusing and things can get a little difficult when trying to express ourselves. Sometimes the only way for us to communicate is for us to just say what's on our mind.

Suggestions: Find a support group either in your area or online. This helps with connecting with others like you. Remember, this is a process and nothing changes overnight. Be patient and kind to yourself.
